[He paused, then frowned. Okay, no, the timeline on this was way off. He knew that his Bruce hadn't met Selina until he was Batman, and the boy in front of him was way too young for that.]

Wait, how do you know Selina?

[Although his voice trailed off, unsure of how to finish that sentence. Girlfriend was the first word that came to mine, but he knew Selina would hate it. She didn't like labels. Even when Ivy had asked, she'd denied they were a couple. Even though they definitely were. Probably.]

...we've known each other for a while now.

Although she's currently mad at me. [Again.]

[Wow, Selina and Bruce were fighting. There's the biggest surprise that ever wasn't. Tim was almost relieved, because that at least fit within the paradigm he was used to for the two of them. But there was a lot more that was confusing.]

...I don't think the two of us are from the same universe.

[Bruce didn't seem all that surprised either, though perhaps for different reasons.]

May I ask what drew you to that conclusion, exactly?

[He shrugged a little, giving him a wry grin.] The Bruce I know didn't meet Selina until they were both adults. Maybe he might have heard of Jervis Tetch when he was younger--though I doubt it--but I'm pretty sure about Selina.

[Again, not so surprising given Tim's noted reactions up until this point, though a new, far more pressing question came to mind. If he hadn't met Selina until they were both older....]

There was something that happened to a while back. To my parents. Selina and I met...because she's claimed she was there.

[Which he now knew to be a lie. Or thought he knew; after her initial "confession", she'd never again insisted otherwise. Of course, by that point, it hasn't seemed to matter so much. Their relationship had evolved so far past the circumstances of that fateful night. Still...]

Does this mean...in the Gotham you're from...they might still be alive?

[At first, Tim was confused. Something happened that Selina might have witnessed? And then Bruce asked his question, and he felt like he'd been struck. Of course. Of course Bruce would want to know that. And Tim wished he could give him good news, but of course.

He couldn't.

He shook his head once.]

[In some ways, it was like losing them all over again. Only he was more prepared. Mentally. Emotionally. His training and recent experiences...they really had made him stronger.]

[His eyes averted only for a moment before returning to Tim. Hints of sadness remained, but they were well hidden beneath a stoic, calm mask.]

[For all the differences they had found in their respective Gothams, that had to remain a constant, didn't it?]

[Mettaton considers rubbing it in and continuing to tease the man, but as he seems to wave away his embarrassment and desperately cover, the robot decides to let it slide. He's been enjoying the company, so it's, ha, no skin off his bones.]

[He looks out beyond them both, seeing the slowly approaching river and looks thoughtful.]

I must say though, I'd much rather avoid swimming if I can.

[Mettaton is in the library once again, returning books and browsing for something new to read when he spots... oh.

This person, whoever they are, is beautiful. He watches them curiously, noting the claw and wondering if they are somehow a Monster. Then they open a book and seem confused. He gives them another couple of seconds to see if they will do anything else and then speaks up.]

That book not to your taste?

[Oh yes. Sesshoumaru can tell that the bird is not actually just a bird. It's less the size, and more the fact that it doesn't have a smell he would attribute to alive. From one supernatural being to another...he knows what's going on.

Thank goodness, because he certainly doesn't know much else besides that.]

It is not in a language I'm familiar with, therefore there's no way to judge it.

[Even so, he puts the book back with a faint sense of annoyance still perceptible through his body language. Seriously, what kind of nonsense is this? Cater to him, stupid humans. Ah, but anyway.

Being naturally curious, he gives the robot a once over. Nope. Never seen anything like that before.]

It's your life. Half of Gotham are fools, rushing in where angels fear to tread. You all act like everyone else deserves Arkham, but the truth is? No one in Gotham is sane enough to not belong there. It's why we stay.

[Shrugging as she said it, but believing it. She'd seen enough in Gotham to believe it, and wasn't bothered by her own sanity. Whether she had any or not. Of course, she embraced her life now, all she had done, and all she was prepared to do.

Maybe not so different than Bruce in determination. Except she was looking to drag Gotham down further, while, in her mind, Bruce was fighting a near impossible uphill battle. Just like Jim.]

I think if you had seen enough, you wouldn't stay in Gotham. Same if you were any saner than me, or anyone else.

Wonderland will give you reason to though. I assume you've read the book?

[Which definitely spoke of a place as close to Arkham as anything else.]

Grout looks closely for any hint of sarcasm in the robot's face _{can robots even look sarcastic? he's excited to learn}, because the feedback from his invisible informants is... not great. They'd have him believe that Mettaton is mocking him. This, delivered with jeers of ^idiot! He'll take off your arms and cook them, in words that match the rhythm and the tenor of the creaking wagon wheels.

He doesn't look like he's being mocking. ]

That does seem wise. I shouldn't like to go swimming with you either.

[ He doesn't raise his voice over the talking. He has years of practice at resisting that.

Grout pulls at his ear, wishing they'd appreciate his effort.

(He's done that more than once on the journey; often enough for it to seem like an ordinary tic, a habit when thinking, maybe earache. Something mundane.)
