Right.

[ yet again it's her trust in her captain's ability to throw down that tempers b'elanna's reaction. she sighs deeply, blowing the air out in a rush. ]

I think it's all a smokescreen, now that you mention it. I haven't been able to identify the frequency that's blocking communication, but I have a subprogram running to scan each potential band.

[ which could take years and is the sort of gamble someone takes when they've done everything else they could think of. a space hail-mary if you will. and unfortunately, it seems even that won't be a viable solution: ]

I get positive results from every single one.

Nothing lasts, that's for certain. Except for chaos, of course.

[ personal fortunes, political standing, perspective-- these have all been proven fragile, lying in ruins behind her. even sophie's own unlife. ]

And then there is the obvious counter to your argument. Unless you don't want to leave Wonderland?

Of course I want to.

[Sure, her world is hellish in its own way, but its home, and she has people waiting for her.]

That said, I'm used to things not going as planned. You learn to adapt. Change your wants, or find a way to knock those obstacles out of your way. Hoping for the latter, personally.

A scientist. [Oh, he’s quite happy to hear that—although the news isn’t all good. At least not for this woman.] Then I’m afraid salvaging a microwave for parts isn’t going to be the last frustration you face during your time here.

[Especially not when she continues on to say she’s not only from a time well beyond this place, but even two centuries past the era Rip labels as his. It does make her particular choice of fashion all the more curious, particularly to someone who is rather used to having to dress appropriately for the times.]

If you’ll allow me a question just for curiosity’s sake: when did Victorian-era dress come back into vogue, exactly?

[Network - Video]

[She's had a little bit of time to explore and get acclimated to her surroundings - and to search for a particular someone who she hasn't been able to find yet. Her expression is cheery, with a glint of worry in her eyes.]

Nǐhǎo, Wonderland! My name is Mei-Ling, but you can call me Mei! I've come to understand that this place has brought us all from different kinds of worlds, but I think we can make the best of our arrangements until we manage to get home!

Ah, have any of you seen a small blue robot? It's always with me but I seem to have lost it when I arrived here. It's a weather-modification drone that I created back home. It's quite cheerful and likes being pet. Please let me know if you spot it. Thank you very much!

[Action - The Hallways]

[There's a new arrival, and she's... a bit overdressed for being inside. It doesn't seem to be bothering her all that much, though - she's just merrily observing people come and go as she makes her way down the hallways throughout the mansion, lugging around a big cylindrical canister of liquid on her back, with an odd-shaped indention on the top - almost as if it's missing something that's normally connected to it.

She's careful to not bump into people, but she's free to be bothered - she gives a cheerful wave whenever she makes eye contact, and seems eager to strike up a conversation, but doesn't do so unless it looks like the other wants to talk.]

[Wheatley was minding his own business, traveling down the hallway on his "management rail" - really, a robot arm he managed to pull out of the closets. It's a miracle he can actually use it to get around, being nothing more than a ball-shaped robot with handles. Nothing special.]

[He greets the new arrival as he passes by, only to pause and do a double take. Was she wearing winter clothes inside? That makes no sense at all.]

Uh... Hang on a tick. Aren't you hot in that? At all? That looks like it would be very uncomfortable on you.

First or last, it's a frustration I'm willing to face head on. [ no-win scenarios: kirk's not the only captain who loathes them. she arguably hates them more than he does. ]

It didn't, [ she says with a huff that's half ire, half exasperation. ] I was in the middle of-- Let's just say that recreational activities in my time are a bit more interactive. Instead of watching something on a... what's it called, television? You become part of the story through the use of holographic simulations.

[Oh, but he likes her spirit already. Perhaps it's the fact that she's new, but Rip honestly can't say when he last into someone so absolutely determined to beat everything thrown at them. It's refreshing, particularly when one considers just how many people are seemingly content to simply wait through their tenure in Wonderland.]

Television, yes. [Now, does she change her mind about what she means to describe because she thinks he might not understand, or for other reasons? Perhaps it's not something most would pick up on, but Rip is acutely aware of what's involved when trying to preserve the timeline.

Curiouser and curiouser.]

Other ideas indeed--although to be fair, one could argue that you have been pulled into quite the story. Or the setting, at least; things most certainly don't go according to script in this dimension.

But do forgive me; I've yet to introduce myself. [He extends a hand in greeting.] Rip Hunter. It's a pleasure, Miss...?

Ava can be found in the dining area, a glass of something in front of her and her head in her hands. This place made no damn sense and everyone she's ran into, she's sure are insane. This can't be a place called Wonderland...

She didn't have much to go home to, but what she did have was hers and she wanted it back.

[Now there is nothing Rip can do to hide the grin that flashes across his face. True, such a rank doesn’t necessarily mean that she is the commander of a ship, but with that stubborn streak she’s already shown, the resourcefulness of using available technology to attempt to amplify her own, and something unspoken in her presence?

Rip stands quite certain that there is a vessel she helms.]

Unfortunately you’ll find that most people around here don’t appreciate formal titles, Captain. [Which rates as nothing more than a minor annoyance, but still one that will forever needle at Rip.] However, since you’ve offered yours:

[And because he has to see if she is somehow from the future of his own world.]

Waverider, [ she echoes, nodding. ] And just what sort of waves does your ship ride, Captain?

sooo any thoughts on apping Janeway for real? :D

[personal profile] directed 2017-02-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I do indeed wish you luck, Captain.

[If nothing else, it would be interesting to see how she stands up against the mansion's general resistance to anything resembling formality.

There's no recognition of the ship name, so Rip stands doubtful that Katherine is associated with any organization the Time Masters may have managed to form after the destruction of the Vanishing Point. Still, he doesn't want to give away too much: there are things he's had to reveal simply by being here with a desire to go home, and Rip's intention is to stick to those details.]

Well, more metaphorical, really--although traversing through time isn't exactly a smooth process. [He's also taken note of the fact that she hasn't offered up the name of her own ship, what organization she's a Captain within, or anything else beyond her name and rank.

Fair's fair.]

And yourself? You don't strike me as the type who merely holds "Captain" as a title without some form of command to back it up.

[Oh, he hardly sees it as a refusal. Such deliberation is hardly unfamiliar to him, as it’s a process he himself undertakes quite frequently. The potential alterations to the timeline are limitless in this world, and without the relative certainty provided by establishing that they are indeed from different universes (and even then, ones unlikely to cross over), it can be difficult to say just what can and cannot be deemed “safe” to share.]

Point of fact, the reason why I travel through time is to prevent aberrations caused by those who aren’t quite so careful when it comes to preserving history. [So the opposite of meddlesome, at least in theory. Rip cannot say with full honesty that he and his team haven’t caused some of those aberrations as well—although they do take care to fix them, at the very least.]

It is indeed. I’m trying to figure out if you might be from a point I would consider the future, in which case it would become rather prudent for me to stop asking questions. [Although the designation “USS” has fallen somewhat out of usage even by his time, so it’s likely she may not be.] Plus, I’ll admit I’m curious. You’ve got a position somewhat similar to mine, you’re not from the early 21st century or before, and you’re particularly technically adept. Perhaps not the rarest combination around here, but it’s enough for me to be glad to have run into you.
