Claire Fraser | Outlander

Network °
[ Claire's been in Wonderland now for a week, and she's read the literature provided, spoken with a few of her peers. She's no stranger to time travel, though at least this was gentler, in a way. Still, she's no separated from her husband, pregnant and tired and just wanting Jamie. But there's no sign of him, so she's making do, the best she can.

Now that she's learned to use this peculiar little device, the video switches on and it's fascinating, truly. ]

I suppose I'm talking to all of you now, aren't I? A proper introduction, then: I'm Claire Fraser. I have some questions that have yet to be answered by anyone, only because I suppose it's not something that's asked often.

[ She takes a deep breath, shifting in her seat before letting out that breath. ]

I'm with child. With time not moving, does that also mean that the pregnancy won't move? I've been told to still expect...ah...monthlies. If I can expect that, should I expect a pregnancy to continue? And if it doesn't, is it still safe? Is my child still safe?

I appreciate any help and advice. I've learned about the mirrors, odd as it is. And the closets - even odder. But if there's anything you think I should know about, by all means, please tell me.

Library °

[ There's so much knowledge at her fingertips, and that's how Claire's come to sit, weeping in a corner of the library. She's known, she's always known how the Battle of Culloden would end, but this is her life, her husband's life. His clan, her clan. Her fingers rest on the page.

On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart were decisively defeated. The quick and bloody battle on Culloden Moor was over in less than an hour. Between 1,500 and 2,000 Jacobites were killed in the brief battle. ]

Jamie...

[ His name hurts her throat, makes it tighten, and it's clear, this woman is in emotional distress, but she's a world away, paying attention to nothing around her.

She shouldn't have done this, she only has herself to blame for using the endless knowledge of this world. ]

library!

[personal profile] spycurious 2017-03-27 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Still dressed in his blues, perhaps for his own comfort more than anything else, Ben has practically sequestered himself within the library. He's found that he can acquire almost any document he wishes to find--the quiet excitement has lifted his spirits considerably--

--but a curtain falls over his good mood, dampening it. He'd been looking for more books on a whim when the soft sobs of a woman reach his ears. He stumbles upon the woman by accident, having been lost in a world of his own, and halts midstep not ten feet away. He knows he ought to leave her to her business, but she looks too much like a childhood friend of his for him to feel right about turning a blind eye.

Ben softly clears his throat to avoid startling her.]

Excuse me, madam. May I be of any assistance?

[ Claire tenses anyway; a force of habit, really, and she quickly wipes away her tears as she looks up at him. she registers that this man is in uniform though she's relieved to see it's blue, not red. She doesn't know what she would have done if faced with another red coat. ]

No, I'm afraid not. Unless you can rewrite history.

[ She says it as an off the cuff remark, clearing her throat and smoothing her tartan skirt. She's wearing what makes her feel close to home, close to Jamie, and though the French silks were nice, they weren't anything that reminded her of her husband. ]

[ shit. this claire runs her hand through her hair, clearly out of her element. and yet, she might be more in it than pretty much anyone else in wonderland. ]

Hi, Claire. [ jesus this is weird. claire sighs and shakes her head. ] I'm a nurse, back home. Maybe we can figure this out together. Can I ask you a few questions?

A nurse. [ Claire smiles a little. ] So was I. ....Sort of.

[ Long story. ]

Please, feel free. Whatever you think might help get to the bottom of things.
medicalshit: (cause my heart is full of you)

[personal profile] medicalshit 2017-03-28 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. We'll make it work. I'm not up on my pre-natal, but the library's pretty extensive here.

[ and hey, two nurse claires are better than one. even when sort of enters the equation. ]

How far along are you?

At the tail end of the first trimester, if I've counted correctly.

[ It might help if Claire gives a bit of background information. Possibly. And she will when she needs to. ]

Things haven't been particularly calm to the point where I stopped keeping track of the days, but I'm only just showing.
medicalshit: (after a while i fanned the fire)

[personal profile] medicalshit 2017-03-28 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear that. If I've learned anything about Wonderland, it's that most people's worlds aren't utopias.

[ a smile ghosts over claire's face, but it doesn't interrupt her focus just yet. ]

Are you feeling OK since arriving? Any increase or decrease in nausea or heartburn or anything like that? Any dizziness?

[personal profile] beautifullies 2017-03-28 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Claire actually pauses to think about that for a moment, one hand going to her stomach. ]

No, Actually. Quite the opposite. It's...as if there's nothing, now, but my abdomen is firm and slightly rounded. Only enough to tell when I'm alone in private.

[ Meaning, unclothed. It's not obvious at all when she's dressed. ]

[ quiet, now, claire just watches the other woman for a moment. the local therapist comes to mind, on the heels of the more concrete steps they could take to answer this question. choices that aren't hers to make. she curses quietly. one step at a time: ]

Are you from a world with ultrasound technology?

[ There isn't a single part of Claire that doesn't wish her husband was here with her. She doesn't need him, per say, but she needs him.

Not Frank.

Jamie. The only husband she wants to acknowledge at all. Letting out a breath, she shakes her head. Even in her true-born timeline, no such thing exists yet. ]

I'm afraid I'm not certain what you're even referencing, so I'll take that as no.
medicalshit: (cause my heart is full of you)

[personal profile] medicalshit 2017-03-28 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. OK. Uhh...

[ claire presses her lips together while trying to figure out how exactly to go about this. her eyes spring wider with an idea, and she taps her own device. ]

Where I come from, we have machines that can show us live images from the inside of our bodies. In early pregnancies, we can use an ultrasound to pick up the heartbeat of a fetus. It's not invasive, and it's physically safe for you and the baby.

[ the 'but' hangs there in the air. it's one thing to inform a person of their choices. it's another when you can't even be sure of the verdict once you have the data. ]
beautifullies: (⌘ 36)

this interaction has made me 100% decide to app tbh.

[personal profile] beautifullies 2017-03-28 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It sounds like magic, but then again, hasn't Claire seen enough to not doubt what she's being told? After all, they're talking on this device that seemed impossible. She never in her wildest dreams could have imagined something like this as a phone.

At the pause, her head tilts a little, a tiny frown making her forehead knit together. ]

Modern medicine, I take it, has advanced far beyond poultices and prayer. But you're hesitating.

[ Honestly, the idea that she could see her baby and hear the heart beating is astounding and it makes her want to say yes right away. ]
medicalshit: (faithful from november on to next decemb)

<333 i was super nervous about how Real it would get and i'm so pleased already!

[personal profile] medicalshit 2017-03-28 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[ a deep, grounding breath leads claire into a single long nod. speaking of doubt... ]

You're in a more difficult position than most people, but this is still a can of worms we're potentially opening. There are plenty of other issues we'll have to talk about, but those are bridges we can cross when we get to them.

[ if they don't hear a heartbeat, it doesn't necessarily mean there's no life. if they do, they track and monitor claire's condition from there. but there's always the chance that wonderland is lying. ]

What's your best case scenario look like, here?

[ That question makes Claire pause. If time is frozen, that means...she thinks, that her baby wouldn't grow. Which she realizes now means there may be nothing, no matter the technology. ]

Knowing my baby is there. That's all. I feel that if I can expect Wonderland to stop time, a pregnancy wouldn't be immune to that, I suppose.

[ She has to suppose, that's all she can do, really. ]
