[for a guy that many would write off as a scoundrel or bad guy doc can be surprisingly gentle at times. it's something wynonna isn't really used to, she hasn't had a lot of gentleness in her life.

she nudges his shoulder gently.]

[that accent of his does things to her, okay? she can't help it.]

[ he stumbles for dramatic show when she shoves him, having the audacity to look offended for the briefest of seconds — all for show, all to just mess with her. doc's not quite sure what she means, however, so he brings her hand back up to his lips to press another kiss to the back of it. ]

No. Not that. [though that's also quite distracting in it's own right. he's just one big distraction to her and it's frustrating.

it's been a while, okay?]

You keep calling me darlin'. [and she clearly isn't offended by that, that isn't the problem.]

Do you have to speak like that all the time? With the whole drawl and everything?

I see. [ grin. giving a man like doc holliday ammo like that? not your smartest move, wynonna. ]

How else would you have me speak? I've never spoken any way else.

[she regrets it almost as soon as she said it. too late to turn back now though. she huffs a little impatiently.]

I don't know...just some way that isn't so...you know...

Southern? [ yeah, that's... not happening. unless you're willing to wrangle a dialect coach for him, which in this place: good luck. ] I'll have you know that the the way I speak is sophistication at its finest.

[ a beat. ]

[she gives him a look.]

[ he can't help but smirk. ]

Not for as long as I live, which is lookin' to be a very long time.

[let's not get ahead of ourselves, doc]

You know, when we first met Waverly told me you were too old for me, she had no idea how right she was.

Are you implying that my medical degree is lesser than those who practice other medicines?

[ look, he was a talented dental surgeon, once upon a time. bright, young, and promising. he could've made a rich career out of it, had he not fallen ill with the same disease that took his mother and brother. ]

I'm only a-hundred and sixty-five. [ ONLY... ]

Of course not, if I ever have a cavity you'll be the first dentist I call.

[Hey it's still more of a medical degree than she'll ever have. She's never had that kind of talent for things, expect for killing reverents.]

My mistake. That's not a big gap between my mere 27 years at all.

[ doc stops walking, and if she chooses to carry on herself, she'll find his fingers slipping from hers. ]

I went to university, I'll have you know. A fine institution in Philadelphia. I studied and worked hard for years, graduating so fast that I had to wait to obtain my license because the board deemed me "too young" to practice. I was good at what I did, Wynonna. Even if I was unable to keep doing it.

[She doesn't keep walking, instead falling still by his side.]

Sorry. I didn't mean -- [She furrows her brow.]

You know me, I make light of what everyone does.

[She never went to college, let alone higher education. People weren't exactly sitting her down to ask her what college she wanted to go to or what she wanted to study.

She had enough of a record by high school to get that those things weren't meant for her. ]

Did, [ doc corrects. ] What everyone did.

[ he knows he's behind the times when it comes to dentistry, that some of the techniques he learned and employed would be regarded as unnecessarily barbaric by "modern" standards. maybe he could start reading up on the newer methods while here. ]

Did. Right. That's not what you do anymore.

[She gets that at the time he thought he'd never do anything again, really, or as much as she can understand that. She's never been sick like that.

She squeezes his hand lightly.]

I appreciate what you do now, that counts right?

[ he was a desperate man in the years following his grim prognosis, especially the later ones. doc tried to keep practicing, but he ultimately turned to gambling and other means of sustaining himself. wyatt didn't approve of all it, but it had been his short life to live. when he agreed to what clootie talked him into, he never imagined it would ensure he not only survived consumption, but lived long enough to meet his best friend's great-great-granddaughter. ]

I know you do, and I am happy to what I can.

[She can't imagine. Or maybe she can a little bit, none of the Earp heirs tend to live long lives but she's never suffered illness like that, where he could barely even get out of bed. That made him make a deal he still regrets to this day.

It's just out of her scope of reality.

She knows how it feels to be desperate for control over your own life. Your destiny. Your sanity. That much she gets but not the rest.]

And maybe it's selfish, but I'm glad you're here with me. It's strange enough to be in such a place, it'd suck more to be on my own.
