Even when Jessica didn't think about the true hell she had been through, she didn't think most people were good at heart. She's seen too much of the other side of things to believe in the goodness of the world.

"I would say I was okay with that but bills don't pay themselves," she admits with a dry chuckle. Nodding though, glad to have heard that from her. It meant not being alone in all of this, which she shouldn't need but without connections and a few she could look to for backup. Trust she didn't have, knowing she might have need for backup was another.

"You mean try and figure out who is behind this? I'm not even sure that's the biggest question. For me that's what they're doing to us. I'm not a real big fan of people fucking with me and having no control over it. If they're fucking in our memories, what else are they messing with."

Were you raised in it? I was raised in the fae world, surrounded by them. Some though... they feel like you do and she wasn't raised with us like she should have been.

Which is interesting since they just let us loose on the populace. Survival of the fittest, I guess. [He shrugs, considering that.] But they throw death traps at us, and then put the humans on the same games? Sounds like someone doesn't like them much.

[Garfield notices what Taako is looking at, and, although he's still smiling, his expression does just look the slightest bit more annoyed. Stocking that thing was just, the worst decision he's ever made in his life, really.]

Yes, unfortunately, the closets don't seem to give anything of the sort! What little magical stock there is, I had to get from my fellow merchants! Though, their prices are a bit... steep, hence the limited supply here. I'm trying to wear them down, but they just don't seem to have much interest in wits and wagers! Just no appreciation at all for the wonderful dark arts of merchantry!

[He's not against making some sacrifices for his craft- he's certainly going to be making more of them in the future. But he'd really rather not lose more memories than he has to.]

People still keep busy, though. There are a couple bars and a diner, and plenty of people trying to do research and figure out what is going on."

That is, of course, is the more frustrating part of this whole scenario. At least at home, Chloe finds answers to her questions. Things make sense; people kill other people, and the motives can usually be whittled down to the basics; greed, love, or revenge. They aren't mutually exclusive, nor are outliers particularly uncommon. No matter what, though, every crime fits a procedure, every story follows an outline. It is Chloe's job to fill in the in-between.

Of course, here, that is nearly impossible to figure out. Concepts like motive, intent or justice have no place here. Nothing works the way it is supposed to.

"I'm not sure which is the bigger question either, honestly. I know that there's a theory that Wonderland actually thrives on our memories. As if we, I don't know, power it in some way. Which, I know, is not the most comforting idea. I don't think anyone is really happy with the stuff that goes on here."

No, I wasn't raised in it. I didn't even know about my powers til pretty recently. But I've been through my fair share so, don't take that as I sign that I don't know what I'm doing.

Definitely overrun. [ At this point, the historical vampire problem is pretty much the worst kept secret in Mystic Falls. ] I mean, there's still humans who don't know but, I think they are getting harder to find at this point.

You know, they might also assume we aren't going to use our powers to hurt the humans here, either. We already have enough going on here without us all turning on each other.

When my aunt learned that my mother had given her children immortality, she refused to be outdone, so she cast an immortality spell on herself - one that would allow her to keep her magic. She would sleep for a hundred years, and then awaken for one year of life.

Since I was bound to her at the time, I was cursed with the same fate. But I am mortal now. Once Dahlia was killed, the spell was lifted on me.

[ Bonnie appreciates her explaining it. Freya doesn't owe her any explanations, especially considering the point of time she comes from. It seemed like a huge loophole, an abuse of power... Bonnie doubted Grams would approve. ]

That must have been terrible for you, only getting to actually live for a year at a time. So much must have changed every time you woke up.

"All that though? And I am bored out of my mind. I thought I would be good being financially well off, or in the same position, but I'm like... now what?"

Jessica was quiet for a few minutes, quiet, considering how to word this. "You ever had someone in your head? Like knowing they're screwing with your head and there's nothing you can do about it? It's way worse than not comforting."

[Frowning then, looking utterly hurt for her.]

Why would they assume that? Their hobby is throwing death and dismemberment at us, and then they just bring in whoever to cope with it? You don't think that's not going to end badly?

Corner people and they will do whatever they can to survive. Kill the leaders. Kill one another. Whatever it takes.

[He shrugs as if it was no big deal.]

"I... Don't know," Chloe concedes, realizing it's a really good question. "I mean, you're right, there are probably people who would be willing to volunteer. People in debt, criminals, people who just want a chance to start over. Even they might back out when the events come along, though."

The payoff might not be worth it to most people. Chloe can't really judge, though; she has important reasons to want to go home.

"You mean besides my partner?" It's a joke, but not a great one, and Chloe's smile fades with a shrug of her shoulders. "I mean, I've met some pretty manipulative murderers in my time but... No, nothing that's gotten into my head like this place has."

I'm fine, seriously. I'm glad I didn't know about it. Kinda wish I still didn't.

[ Powers or not, her life hasn't exactly been awesome since she found out about vampires. ]

Yeah, maybe. But people can pretty quickly find themselves on the same side when they have a common enemy. [ She's seen it herself after all; Elijah helping them to kill Klaus, Damon working along with them. ] Not sure I really want you on my side, though.

[ What? He sounds like a jerk. ]

[ She can't help the furrow of her forehead, the annoyance in way her eyes narrow. She's not sure if he's being smarmy of this is just him; the accent makes it hard to figure out, and her patience is running thin. ]

Maybe because I wouldn't hesitate to kill you if I have to.

[ Maybe she puts too much faith in her powers, given what she's been through recently. That won't stop her from laying it out there; vampires need to know to not mess with a Bennett witch, no matter how hot they are. ]

I thought you said we didn't know each other?

[She nods in agreement.]

I learned to make friends with vampires, or witches who were fond of longevity spells. It made it easier to catch up when needed.

When this all started, I didn't even want to be friends with any vampires. I didn't even want to be involved in any of this. It didn't exactly work out that way.

[ Now both of her best friends are, not to mention her future best friend and that just WAY too much for her to even think about. ]

I didn't even know about longevity spells before now. I guess I still have a lot to learn.

"Sounds like someone's on a power trip. They could use their powers for good and all, but instead? Kidnapping people doing shit to help others," she says, shaking her head. As one of those people with powers that gets on a power trip? She knows the difference.

"Yeah no. I'm not talking about soul mates and shit. Like honest to gods, in your head, can't get them out and know they're there and can't stop them. Trust me, it sucks, and this place? Is playing that games. The events? The memories used for them? Someone's in there," she said, tapping her temple. "And I hate it."

"For all my faith in people, one thing I can't deny is that when someone has this kind of power, they aren't too likely to use it for good."

It's not something she likes to concede to, but she's she's seen it all too often. There is almost as if when a certain threshold of control is reached, a switch flips that makes a person's humanity harder to hold onto. Some fought against it, of course, and others just embraced the kind of monsters they could become.

She watches Jessica carefully, watches the look on her face when she talks about what it's like having Wonderland in her head, and it helps Chloe understand her a little more. Whatever Jessica's been through, and Chloe won't even pretend to try to figure it out, has certainly informed her opinions. And whatever it was, it wasn't good.

"The only thing we can do is fight it," Chloe muses, finally pulling her gaze away from the other woman. "Take back whatever little bit of control we can."
