Firing Range

[Bart did his best to be quiet without trying for true silence as he came in. But he had to stop and watch because he really did enjoy watching a skilled craftsman (craftswoman?) at work. So it was no surprise he stuck around, leaning against the back wall in civvies, waiting for a lull.]

Wow, Cissie is going to love you.

[ and when that lull comes, kate leans her bow against a half-wall and stretches her arms in front of her -- fingers knit together -- until she feels a pleasant burn in her forearms.

at the sound of a voice behind her, she turns -- half-gloved fingers finding the back of her neck. ]

Who's Cissie?

[ what? seems like a good question to start. ]

Cissie King-Jones, one of the people from the same world as me. She won gold in Sydney, among other things. I think she'd love a chance to spend time with another talented archer.

[Bart hadn't moved from his position, but there's something in his posture that says he isn't really afraid of being shot at.]

Kate. [ she steps forward and offers a hand as her quiver shifts on her hip. after all, the bow's already set against the wall. ] Don't worry about it. I don't startle easy.

I realized when I was about four that I was never going to have anything close to a normal life. We mostly manage to keep the press away on school-days.

At least I never had anyone throw themselves off a building for a photo op. Or get an audition only to find out the role was to play a horse. Compared to most of my friends, I'm small potatoes.

[Bart thinks about that for a moment, and decides that if Kon isn't hiding, why should he? So in a blur of motion, he goes and gathers all the arrows she'd shot, holding them carefully to not mar the fletching as he offers them to Kate]

[ kate grins. impressed, though not surprised. almost as though she's seen this party trick a time or two before.

Being the fastest teen alive doesn't mean all that much when you're pretty much seen as a sidekick. Not that it's a bad thing to be seen that way. Nobody ever tries to unmask the kids.

[ she remembers being a kid and the attempts made to unmask the young avengers but -- but that was different, wasn't it? they'd never been sidekicks. they'd been alternatives. vigilantes, almost, working outside the purview of the original avengers. ]
