I suppose that mostly depends on what you mean by family. I mean, I barely see my mom, and my dad died before I was born. Sometimes I think the Titans were more my family than anyone except maybe Grandma Iris. Iris West-Allen.

[Remembering all that makes him suddenly no longer hungry, so he pushes away the last bits on his plate and sighs.]

Sometimes it all seems like a lifetime ago.

[accelerate]

[ his eyes almost pop out of his head. he sounds like he's about to laugh, but let's just drum it up to a little bit of disbelief. ]

Iris West-Allen is your grandma? [ his brows pull together before he pulls a face, that brain of his already piecing everything together. barry tries to outrun it, though. ] I know an Iris. She's my best friend and ... [ you know, future wife, everything in this world. that's a bit gooey, isn't it? ]

That's a really funny coincidence. [ but as he says it, he doesn't sound like he believes it. two people with the same name? last time that happened, it was a doppelgänger situation based in the multiverse. ] Really funny. Like for real funny.

[ denial: it's a river that runs deep. barry knows what this is but he can only really handle his doppelgänger marrying iris. having kids??? having grandkids??? ]

[Okay, he can't help that one. It's all Max's fault, from that time in 1941 where he had to stop the world from being changed because of Extant and undoing everything.]

I wonder if that's a multiverse thing, or something he managed to do when he was messing around with time.

[That last is mostly to himself, and it's a sobering thought. Picking brown socks instead of black isn't a big change as the timestream goes, but physical changes? Yikes.]

[ letting out a breath, he shakes his head. ] You're the second person to tell me I'm supposed to be blond. I don't think I could pull it off and — [ not the point, barry. it's easier to focus on that particular thread than the other one. ]

[ hands pressing together, he physically stops himself. ]

You're telling me your grandmother is Iris West-Allen. And that means — [ his hand presses against his chest, indicating toward himself. mouth open, he's about to say and me? but the words fail him. ] I mean, I'm …

[ instead he exclaims: ] Your name is Bart? [ he literally winces. ] ... West-Allen?

[Bart blinked at that. Nobody was supposed to get that joke, unless he met Max once again. And it was something he said more in a way of derailing Bart's babbling at the time.]

[The hyphenation thing, though, that would be horrible.]

I guess it would have been Thawne-Allen if Mom had hyphenated, but considering she got disowned, that was never going to happen. It's just Allen. Bart Allen.

And yes, my life is totally messed up, even compared to some of my friends.

[accelerate]

[ barry's eyebrows shoot right off his face. he flinches at the name — "thawne" isn't a name he ever likes to hear, especially tied into with "allen". it makes him think of eobard, with his wells-face on and with his natural, blonde-haired, smug looking smirk. all the pain he's caused him will be something he could never, ever forget. ]

Thawne … ? [ he'd spit it, but the disbelief etched into his face and his voice is strong enough. had he been expecting that? hell no. easiest way to stop barry in his rambling tracks for sure. ]

[Bart runs a hand through his hair, grimacing.]

Believe me, it's not a relationship I enjoy, either. But Mom said she wouldn't have given up a second of it, even after her dad found out.

[Bart looks off, more pain showing on his face than a kid his age should have, but it was his life, and he wouldn't, couldn't regret one moment of it.]

You probably don't want to hear that story, though. Talking about the future has strange effects on the timestream.

Sorry, man, I — [ he makes a face. do you call your — he doesn't know. he needs joe west to help him out right now, but he has a feeling he'd be just as overwhelmed as he is. ] I need to sit down. [ pulling out the nearest chair, he falls into it, slouching. hand resting against the edge of the table, he rests his head on his palm. ]

[ oh boy. that's his first thought, and the only coherent one he thinks he has. ]

[ he looks up at him. ] Thawne … ? My … I mean … [ he doesn't quite know what he wants to say, so he goes for what is very much a barry allen response: ] Are you okay?

See, that's the funny thing about time. No matter how much the Reverse-Flash hates you, he owes his existence to you, too. But I don't know a whole lot about how things are back home, other than knowing that Grandpa had all of the Speed Force from all across time and the multiverse behind him for that run.

[He wants to believe at the very least that there is a world to go home to.]

Maybe some of Max's Zen Master of Speed stuff rubbed off.

[ "grandpa" is him, barry allen. it's such a strange thought, that somewhere out there, he's living his life. he gets to live his life, marry iris, have kids, have grandkids, and still be the flash. but at twenty-six, he can't really see it. wonderland just keeps doling out the evidence of him being someone of greatness. ]

I have no idea what you're talking about. [ he's shaking his head, looking apologetic for it. ] I really want to, but I don't know Max and anyone who knows me would tell you I don't even know what zen is ... [ taking in a breath, he shrugs, helplessly. ] Maybe we should start from the beginning? Remove all the ... [ he waves his hand. ] Reverse-Flash and zen stuff, and start with just you and me.

[Bart can't help a laugh at that, just a soft chuff of disbelief, because it is weird.]

It's always going to be complicated. It's practically the Flash family motto. Even Uncle Jay has his moments.

Uncle Jay ... [ that's a familiar name, and one barry can recall with clarity. to know that he's there, in the future, gives him some pause given he's his father's doppelgänger in his universe, but jay garrick is a man who has to be of great calibre if bart's calling him "uncle." he cannot believe he's trying to rationalise this right now. ]

[ barry wishes he could drink. (barry wishes iris was here.) ]

Sorry that you inherit that. I'd hope the complicated thing stuck with just me.

Pretty sure it comes with the Speed Force. Either that or the costume. But, well, what's the use of having that kind of ability if you just sit on your ass?

[Bart wouldn't give a moment of it up, even the painful parts.]

I think I decided things the first time I put the Kid Flash uniform on for real. It felt right.

Kid ... [ familiarity dawns on him. hadn't wally become kid flash after he'd made the choice to go back in time? he has no idea what that costume even looks like, but he thinks wally would get a kick out of knowing barry's grandson held it in high value. ]

You have to be careful, you know? [ slightly more comfortable now than he was before, barry ends up picking at fries. all these small future surprises has made him a little hungry. ] The Speed Force and being any Flash is dangerous. [ with his mouth full: ] I'm sure I've given you talks about this before?

[Bart studies his hands for a long moment as he considered. Since he hadn't gotten that lecture before. At least not from Barry. Then it hits him.]

My original codename was "Impulse." Everyone gave me that lecture.

Yeah. [ long, drawn out. barry remembers being impulsive — as a kid, and a little of the flash. (always the flash — hadn't he gotten them all into a mess because of his impulsive decision to take away his own pain?) ] Don't be impulsive. It messes up everything if you don't think things through. And I bet you think things through pretty quickly, right?
