It's not very convincing reasoning, but coupled with their ability to make the weird monster calm down, Undyne is convinced after all. She's less convinced, though, of their innocence. Despite their ability to placate even the strangest, scariest monsters, they still killed Asgore and Mettaton.
They still took Alphys away.
She pouts, looking away, letting them do their thing.]
Why is it all f-- messed up, anyway? I've never seen a monster like that!
no subject
[But they can't keep giving her non-answers. If she wasn't suspicious before, she certainly has to be now.]
It's a lot of little monsters. All rolled together. They just...have to remember who they are.
[That makes sense, right? Absolutely. Yes.]
no subject
How'd they get like that...?
[Somehow, knowing they were just regular monsters... That's even scarier. Could this happen to her? She's never heard of anything like this, no weird... joining of monsters that can't remember themselves. This struggle between multiple wills and bodies and memories.
Is she going to turn into that someday?
Undyne doesn't want to be here anymore. She's shaken to her core, overwhelmed by all of this. Being a child again, being in this creepy place, running into something... someone terrifying like that.
But those monsters...]
That's it! We have to save them!!! We have to... uhh...
[Her thoughts drift to Alphys instantly. Alphys would be the one who would know what to do.
But Alphys is gone. Undyne clenches her fist, gritting her teeth. She rounds back on the human.]
DO SOMETHING!!!
no subject
I am.
[Apparently placated, the Reaper Bird begins to dissolve into nothingness. A soft sigh issues from between parted lips, and the human sits back on their heels.]
It's okay now. See?
no subject
...It's okay now.
[She repeats the words dully, as she continues to stare after its remains, an empty void where too many once were, an imagined stain on the tile that it left.
They're never going to be whole and apart again, are they? They're simply drifted away, to be peaceful despite their shared consciousness. Remembering who they were without being who they were.
Undyne's fist comes down on the mattress, gripping the sheets that have tangled around her legs. She pulls them out of the loose knot, extracting them from herself, leaving the bed a mess as she drops her little sneakers down to the ground.]
Am I going to be stuck like this forever too??
[As a child, constantly forgetting who she was. The same as the Amalgamate.
Only... no. She's still Undyne. Just different Undynes, different versions of herself.]
no subject
[Which would explain how unnerved she is, at the idea of facing a human.]
[A deep breath. They shake their head.]
No. It's an event. It'll...things'll go back to normal eventually.
no subject
She hasn't felt the high of determination in months. Instead, where determination once was, it's nothing but static. Echoing voices of Asgore and Alphys, long gone. Not even able to find hope in the continued lives of her final, remaining friends.
Because they're never leaving the Underground now.]
Nothing's ever going back to normal, [she argues pettily.] Not since you happened to me!! Do you even know what you DID!?
[Obviously they know they killed Asgore, but the disappearance of the remaining six souls, and of Alphys... Do they even know?]
no subject
[Breathe.]
[Face your consequences.]
I hurt people.
no subject
You did worse than THAT!!! NGAAAAHHH!!
[She jumps towards them, fully intending on just wrestling them to the ground. She doesn't exactly have a plan. Though she's long given up on thoughts of revenge, her childlike energy keeps coming back in waves, and that's enough to spur her to action. To do something. She might be slightly younger than them, and in a constant loop of forgetting how to fight with any finesse, just charging head on, but she wants them to at least know.
She's probably never going to get closure. She failed to protect her friends, plain and simple. And if the human can take on Asgore, they can certainly take on a scrawny child version of Undyne, a version of Undyne that couldn't lay a single hand on the King. But she's still just so angry.]
no subject
[The sputter of red light hums out in front of their chest for a fraction of a second, heated and scarlet, before it dissolves like a flurry of sparks. It's instinct, plain and simple, and it has them tensing. Their shoulders set, their back straightens. She's coming. She's coming, and she's one of the monsters with the power to absolutely destroy them. Even like this, she might be able to manage it.]
[She might.]
[She meets no resistance whatsoever. The human's head thumps against the dark greenish tint of the tile, and their hands fall limply to their sides. Their eyes are shut, their lips pressed into a thin, silent line.]
[Go on, then.]
[Please.]
no subject
She punches them as hard as she can, which is pretty strong for a child of her size, but still a child's strength. They've suffered worse. As she keeps punching, the lack of resistance, the memory of her adult self, and sheer exhaustion with the world sap her will, slowly. Soon enough, she's just lightly brushing knuckles against them until she just gives up completely, laying on top of them in a haphazard tangle.
She doesn't say anything more. She just lays there.
Her own adult self said it best. Revenge won't bring anybody back.]
no subject
[She collapses, and the press of someone smaller is a sensation they scramble to reconcile - ultimately fail.]
[What do you say to someone whose anger is wholly justified?]
You're right.
I did.
no subject
I hate you.
[There's something wrong in their tone, something dull and lifeless, but it's almost like they're lording her friends' deaths over her. But she doesn't feel the fresh bite of anger, doesn't feel determination coursing through her veins. She just feels tired.]
This is pointless. I could never kill you.
[Because of her weakness, because she's in a child's body, or because she once thought they were a friend... even she's not sure why. But she knows she won't be able to, so there's no point in trying.
There's no point in anything anymore.]
You know... You really are like him. He never liked killing anyone, either. But he still did it.
[She can't say his name. Hasn't said his name in months.
She sighs up at the ceiling.]
no subject
[She lies there, exhausted. And they don't move.]
[I hate you.]
I know.
I know I can't fix it.
no subject
She just sighs again, still lying on her back. She shouldn't have likened them to Asgore again. Now she's justifying their actions. And she wants to say nothing can justify killing a monster, but she's done the same to humans for nearly the same purpose.
It was justified, then. She was doing it for the good of all monsters. Besides... humans are evil, even though she sort of admires them for how cool their history is. They're the ones that trapped the monsters Underground in the first place.
But this human was supposed to be different. The worst part is, they kind of still are.]
Why did you become my friend??
[She snaps at them suddenly, sitting up and turning to give them a searching look.]
no subject
[Why did you become her friend?]
[Because they were curious. Because none of it mattered. Because they were an anomaly, and they did what they willed on a whim, for no other reason besides the fact that it was there.]
[Because they could.]
[And because they could, they had to.]
I guess I wanted to.
no subject
They're not really answers. They're not helpful at all. They don't ease her hurt.]
That's not good enough.
[Why don't they act like the kind of person who would betray her? Why don't they play the part of the evil human? Why don't they just make things easier?]
I don't get it at all!!! It's so... infuriating!! YOU'RE infuriating!!
[She curls up into a ball.]
You ruined my whole life and you don't even have the decency to be evil.
no subject
[Even at justifying their own mistakes.]
I know.
[It's lifeless, and they're still...just lying there, regarding the ceiling through lidded eyes.]
I guess I can be, if you want.
Evil.
no subject
[There's really no point in forcing them to be something they're not. It'd be a hollow victory, a victory that doesn't even count.
Undyne never gives up, but she's given up. But more than that, Undyne never cheats. Never takes a shortcut. She makes her way by her own strength alone, and if that proves inadequate, then that's that. She has to live with her weakness.
She's no heroine, not anymore. And she's not going to drag herself back into that role just by forcing a human to be the mustache-twirling villain they're not.]
I'm a goddamn liar.
[She curls her little hand into a fist and brings it down on the tile beside her.]
I don't even hate you!! That's the worst part!! I was lying!!!
[She sniffs, almost like she's about to cry. She hasn't cried once over what her life had become. Not in the many months she's spent, almost in a daze, at Papyrus and Sans' home. She hasn't shed a single tear. Something about the shock took the ability from her.
But a tear falls from her chin, and she realizes she is crying. She sniffs again, wiping her eyes on her arm.]
I-I'm a liar.
[She hiccups and hides her face, inhaling sharply through her teeth to keep herself from making too much noise. Her childlike emotions and her adultlike shame war with one another. She's a horrible, mixed up mess.]
no subject
[But they can keep their voice gentle and level.]
You're not a liar.
It's okay to be angry at me. I hurt you.
[She can't deny that. And they won't deny it either; not when it's true.]
no subject
[She's sniffling and biting back sobs at this point, holding her arm over her eyes.]
I couldn't protect them from you!! I let you go to them like I... like I had no idea what would happen!!!
[Because she really didn't. She believed the human was harmless. That they couldn't kill anyone if they tried.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. They were stronger than she could ever be.]
no subject
[She wouldn't want them touching her. So they don't. They sit back on their heels again, as if they were never bowled over, and fold their hands across their knees. She couldn't have known.]
...I tricked you. I made you think I was harmless.
That isn't your fault.
[ * It's you. ]
no subject
[Why aren't they even defending themself? They're not even letting her place the blame elsewhere. They're just...]
NICE???
[That's the word for it. That's what they're being.
They're being nice. She just punched the crap out of them and they're defending her from herself.]
no subject
[So nice to me?]
[Don't think. Don't let things slide down that way. Don't draw parallels where they shouldn't be there. Those aren't your words to borrow, and this isn't your life to ruin.]
...I don't know how to make things right.
[How are you supposed to fix something like that, when you're only ever used to making things so that they were never broken in the first place?]
no subject
[She can't help it -- she actually laughs at the thought, a hiccuping sound through her tears. She sniffs a few more times, trying to regain control of her emotions, but once she's started laughing she can't really stop.
She collapses onto her back again, little hands pressing into her eyes, just giving into it.]
