"I didn't realize I stuck out that much," she quipped, although Chloe wasn't insulted by the insinuation. She liked being a cop, and she was proud of her service. If that meant she reeked of it, well; so be it. "I think it's less about who's stopping us and more about who would we stop? This place isn't exactly a normal environment. The biggest threats come from events or Mirrors, and neither of those are put off by being thrown in a jail cell."

It did give her something to think about, though. Would it help Wonderland to have some kind of protective force? People seemed to look out for each other, but that didn't mean everyone knew how to look out for themselves, especially when it came to events.

"Uh, yeah, the opposite actually. Los Angeles." Jessica didn't exactly reek of small town, either. "You?"

[personal profile] akajj 2017-09-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Naw, you don't. Not like some. I just... You learn to recognize people for what they are, from the obvious traits. Yours was two things. How you came into the room... and that you came in at all. You were looking out for whoever was in here. Much as everyone around here acts like they care, not many would do that. Most I figure would just walk right by."

It was Jessica Jones logic, and maybe it wouldn't always work but it has served her well.

"I don't know, but don't you think that eventually the people will turn? Human nature and all. They'll bring through someone that killed another, someone that thought nothing of killing before this place, and when they try and do what they're used to here, what happens then?"

She shrugs, proving that she expects the worse out of people, here or back home.

"That's pretty much the opposite. Of small town and where I'm from. New York. Hell's Kitchen."

"I guess I have more faith in people than that. I'd like to believe most people are good. I know some are evil, too, but that's why I do what I do back home. When it comes to this place... You might be pleasantly surprised."

It does give her something to think about, though, because Jessica isn't wrong. One day there was bound to be someone who came through that didn't have the community's interests at heart. "I guess when it comes to someone like that coming here..." She shrugs. "We'll have to deal with it when it happens."

Chloe tilts her head, smiling. "That definitely explains the apartment."

[personal profile] akajj 2017-09-28 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Jessica smiles then, a bit cold but not cruel. "Well, that definitely would have sealed the deal on you being a cop. Somehow you guys always have hope and I just never get it. Maybe you deal with a better side of people than I do."

Which she isn't denying. It's entirely possible.

"If they aren't already. I mean, psychos aren't always running around wearing signs. Trust me, I know." She knew all too well how normal they could seem, right until it was too late.

Then she did smile, genuine compared to before, laughing. "Doesn't it though? Least I haven't hung a sign on the door. Not much work here for private investigators. Kind of like for you."

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2017-09-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Knowing Jessica is a private investigator certainly explains the cynicism. Chloe knows enough to know that being a PI isn't all about following cheating husbands; she's had a few take over homicides that the state didn't have enough evidence to prosecute, or worse, undetermined deaths that hid dead ends. Grieving families often didn't move on, not like the police had to. For Chloe and cops like her, it often came to lack of time and man power than apathy. She knew what it was like to know the person who killed the person you loved was still out there, after all.

"If they were wearing signs, both of us would be out of a job," Chloe concedes. "I guess the best we can do is be vigilant. But no one has sent up any warning signs as of yet, at least that I know of."

She steps carefully around the room, glancing at the furniture, chuckling at Jessica's response. "I'm willing to bet you could figure something out. There might not be a lot of homicides to solve, but there is definitely plenty of mystery."

[personal profile] akajj 2017-10-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Even when Jessica didn't think about the true hell she had been through, she didn't think most people were good at heart. She's seen too much of the other side of things to believe in the goodness of the world.

"I would say I was okay with that but bills don't pay themselves," she admits with a dry chuckle. Nodding though, glad to have heard that from her. It meant not being alone in all of this, which she shouldn't need but without connections and a few she could look to for backup. Trust she didn't have, knowing she might have need for backup was another.

"You mean try and figure out who is behind this? I'm not even sure that's the biggest question. For me that's what they're doing to us. I'm not a real big fan of people fucking with me and having no control over it. If they're fucking in our memories, what else are they messing with."

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2017-10-20 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
"At least you don't have to worry about bills here. Rooms are free, closets give you whatever you can think of, literally, and you can eat yourself to death in the dining room if you want to. People still keep busy, though. There are a couple bars and a diner, and plenty of people trying to do research and figure out what is going on."

That is, of course, is the more frustrating part of this whole scenario. At least at home, Chloe finds answers to her questions. Things make sense; people kill other people, and the motives can usually be whittled down to the basics; greed, love, or revenge. They aren't mutually exclusive, nor are outliers particularly uncommon. No matter what, though, every crime fits a procedure, every story follows an outline. It is Chloe's job to fill in the in-between.

Of course, here, that is nearly impossible to figure out. Concepts like motive, intent or justice have no place here. Nothing works the way it is supposed to.

"I'm not sure which is the bigger question either, honestly. I know that there's a theory that Wonderland actually thrives on our memories. As if we, I don't know, power it in some way. Which, I know, is not the most comforting idea. I don't think anyone is really happy with the stuff that goes on here."

[personal profile] akajj 2017-10-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey there's one. Why don't they bring the homeless here. Poor families. People that actually need this place, you know?" Because with all they gave them, they could probably get volunteers rather than kidnapping people." And now she's thinking about that, and bothered it wasn't happening.

"All that though? And I am bored out of my mind. I thought I would be good being financially well off, or in the same position, but I'm like... now what?"

Jessica was quiet for a few minutes, quiet, considering how to word this. "You ever had someone in your head? Like knowing they're screwing with your head and there's nothing you can do about it? It's way worse than not comforting."
thevulnerability: can use please credit (✥ promise me she's not your world)

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2017-10-31 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
"I... Don't know," Chloe concedes, realizing it's a really good question. "I mean, you're right, there are probably people who would be willing to volunteer. People in debt, criminals, people who just want a chance to start over. Even they might back out when the events come along, though."

The payoff might not be worth it to most people. Chloe can't really judge, though; she has important reasons to want to go home.

"You mean besides my partner?" It's a joke, but not a great one, and Chloe's smile fades with a shrug of her shoulders. "I mean, I've met some pretty manipulative murderers in my time but... No, nothing that's gotten into my head like this place has."

[personal profile] akajj 2017-11-12 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like someone's on a power trip. They could use their powers for good and all, but instead? Kidnapping people doing shit to help others," she says, shaking her head. As one of those people with powers that gets on a power trip? She knows the difference.

"Yeah no. I'm not talking about soul mates and shit. Like honest to gods, in your head, can't get them out and know they're there and can't stop them. Trust me, it sucks, and this place? Is playing that games. The events? The memories used for them? Someone's in there," she said, tapping her temple. "And I hate it."
thevulnerability: can use please credit (✥ don't give the ghost up)

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2017-11-12 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"For all my faith in people, one thing I can't deny is that when someone has this kind of power, they aren't too likely to use it for good."

It's not something she likes to concede to, but she's she's seen it all too often. There is almost as if when a certain threshold of control is reached, a switch flips that makes a person's humanity harder to hold onto. Some fought against it, of course, and others just embraced the kind of monsters they could become.

She watches Jessica carefully, watches the look on her face when she talks about what it's like having Wonderland in her head, and it helps Chloe understand her a little more. Whatever Jessica's been through, and Chloe won't even pretend to try to figure it out, has certainly informed her opinions. And whatever it was, it wasn't good.

"The only thing we can do is fight it," Chloe muses, finally pulling her gaze away from the other woman. "Take back whatever little bit of control we can."

[personal profile] akajj 2017-11-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Well there we go. Something you and I agree on."

She's run into it much too often that power most often means a lot of bullshit and using of people. Jessica has seen it time and time again.

Jessica tensed then, not quite looking at Chloe. "Yeah, trust me. I know that's all you can do, but that doesn't make it any easier." And it didn't mean one thing. "So, if they can take memories and cause us to be in weird places and see things that aren't real... how do we know they're not planting thoughts while they're at it?"
thevulnerability: (✥ my eyes don't recognize you no more)

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2017-12-10 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Chloe cringes slightly. The last thing she wants to do is say something that might risk traumatizing a new arrival (or bringing up old trauma; Chloe knows how it feels, how it's easier to not talk about something because ignoring it is far less painful than reliving it).

But she won't lie to her, either. It wouldn't be fair to do so, and she doesn't like lairs. It's one thing she and Lucifer have in common.

"It's... definitely possible." She nods stiffly, taking a breath before giving her attention back to Jessica. "It's happened, during events. There have been ones where they... make us think things we wouldn't usually. And others where they completely wipe our memories and replace them with something else. I know that probably isn't the answer you're looking for."

[personal profile] akajj 2017-12-23 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, that's what I've been figuring all along. "Haven't dealt with one of those yet, but figure its just a matter of time. Which means, for all we know? This is really not even real."

She makes a face, disgusted and irritated at the same time.

"I really fucking hate that part, you know? Not knowing what's real or not, what's them and what's you. Makes this place seem like a damn landmine, and everyone in it has a foot on the trigger."
thevulnerability: please do not take (✥ there's no need to stay in chains)

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2018-01-28 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah..." Chloe fades out for a moment, pressing her lips together. "It's almost like a brainwashing technique. Making us doubt our reality so we can't figure out what we're fighting. And if we can't fight we don't. Maybe it's just something else this place throws in the mix to make us complacent."

Chloe doesn't have any proof of that but it's a theory, and will get filed away into all of her other theories she's come up with since arriving in Wonderland, although the viable ones are few and far between.

"We still have to find a way to live in it, though. As... Completely screwed up as it might be."

[personal profile] akajj 2018-02-03 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Jessica takes another long gulp, pausing for a breath and then taking another drink. She shakes her head, but it's not denying what Chloe is saying. "Wouldn't doubt it. Making you doubt reality is a quick way to get what you want. People start to worry, you know? Is this really the bad guy or am I about to hurt someone that doesn't deserve it."

It's a bitterness that hits way too close to home for Jessica. Way too close.

"And not end up dead. That whole return of the living dead shtick they've got going on? There has to be a reason they want us to believe we can die, and that they hold the key to letting us live again." Because she isn't believing that they actually die. Naw, that so wasn't happening.
thevulnerability: can use please credit (✥ show me where it hurts)

[personal profile] thevulnerability 2018-02-07 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"We do die. Believe me."

Chloe would know, after all. Not that it's something she's super thrilled about knowing, it's still one of the few things she's sure of in this place.

"They have control over everything here. Our lives, if we come back, how we come back, even our memories. I don't know how they do the things they do, but at this point I know that it happens. So just... Do you're best not to die. It sucks."

[personal profile] akajj 2018-02-11 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"You believed you die. Doesn't mean you did," she points out. "I'm not saying that we don't, but I'm not accepting any of it for face value. Listen..."

She pauses, considering her words careful, not wanting to admit too much. Not to anyone.

"I've had someone do that to me before. He lives... he lived in my damn head and he controlled me. No matter what I wanted to do, I couldn't. So I'm not buying a single damn word of this place. Not the least of all being that they can bring people back from the dead with our bodies perfectly intact, no wounds, no scars, nothing. We buy that, we've got to buy we could be clones and definitely not playing that game.

"But yeah, thanks. And I mean it. No plans on dying here. I hate having anything in my head as it is."
