It did give her something to think about, though. Would it help Wonderland to have some kind of protective force? People seemed to look out for each other, but that didn't mean everyone knew how to look out for themselves, especially when it came to events.
"Uh, yeah, the opposite actually. Los Angeles." Jessica didn't exactly reek of small town, either. "You?"
no subject
It was Jessica Jones logic, and maybe it wouldn't always work but it has served her well.
"I don't know, but don't you think that eventually the people will turn? Human nature and all. They'll bring through someone that killed another, someone that thought nothing of killing before this place, and when they try and do what they're used to here, what happens then?"
She shrugs, proving that she expects the worse out of people, here or back home.
"That's pretty much the opposite. Of small town and where I'm from. New York. Hell's Kitchen."
no subject
It does give her something to think about, though, because Jessica isn't wrong. One day there was bound to be someone who came through that didn't have the community's interests at heart. "I guess when it comes to someone like that coming here..." She shrugs. "We'll have to deal with it when it happens."
Chloe tilts her head, smiling. "That definitely explains the apartment."
no subject
Which she isn't denying. It's entirely possible.
"If they aren't already. I mean, psychos aren't always running around wearing signs. Trust me, I know." She knew all too well how normal they could seem, right until it was too late.
Then she did smile, genuine compared to before, laughing. "Doesn't it though? Least I haven't hung a sign on the door. Not much work here for private investigators. Kind of like for you."
no subject
"If they were wearing signs, both of us would be out of a job," Chloe concedes. "I guess the best we can do is be vigilant. But no one has sent up any warning signs as of yet, at least that I know of."
She steps carefully around the room, glancing at the furniture, chuckling at Jessica's response. "I'm willing to bet you could figure something out. There might not be a lot of homicides to solve, but there is definitely plenty of mystery."
no subject
"I would say I was okay with that but bills don't pay themselves," she admits with a dry chuckle. Nodding though, glad to have heard that from her. It meant not being alone in all of this, which she shouldn't need but without connections and a few she could look to for backup. Trust she didn't have, knowing she might have need for backup was another.
"You mean try and figure out who is behind this? I'm not even sure that's the biggest question. For me that's what they're doing to us. I'm not a real big fan of people fucking with me and having no control over it. If they're fucking in our memories, what else are they messing with."
no subject
That is, of course, is the more frustrating part of this whole scenario. At least at home, Chloe finds answers to her questions. Things make sense; people kill other people, and the motives can usually be whittled down to the basics; greed, love, or revenge. They aren't mutually exclusive, nor are outliers particularly uncommon. No matter what, though, every crime fits a procedure, every story follows an outline. It is Chloe's job to fill in the in-between.
Of course, here, that is nearly impossible to figure out. Concepts like motive, intent or justice have no place here. Nothing works the way it is supposed to.
"I'm not sure which is the bigger question either, honestly. I know that there's a theory that Wonderland actually thrives on our memories. As if we, I don't know, power it in some way. Which, I know, is not the most comforting idea. I don't think anyone is really happy with the stuff that goes on here."
no subject
"All that though? And I am bored out of my mind. I thought I would be good being financially well off, or in the same position, but I'm like... now what?"
Jessica was quiet for a few minutes, quiet, considering how to word this. "You ever had someone in your head? Like knowing they're screwing with your head and there's nothing you can do about it? It's way worse than not comforting."
no subject
The payoff might not be worth it to most people. Chloe can't really judge, though; she has important reasons to want to go home.
"You mean besides my partner?" It's a joke, but not a great one, and Chloe's smile fades with a shrug of her shoulders. "I mean, I've met some pretty manipulative murderers in my time but... No, nothing that's gotten into my head like this place has."
no subject
"Yeah no. I'm not talking about soul mates and shit. Like honest to gods, in your head, can't get them out and know they're there and can't stop them. Trust me, it sucks, and this place? Is playing that games. The events? The memories used for them? Someone's in there," she said, tapping her temple. "And I hate it."
no subject
It's not something she likes to concede to, but she's she's seen it all too often. There is almost as if when a certain threshold of control is reached, a switch flips that makes a person's humanity harder to hold onto. Some fought against it, of course, and others just embraced the kind of monsters they could become.
She watches Jessica carefully, watches the look on her face when she talks about what it's like having Wonderland in her head, and it helps Chloe understand her a little more. Whatever Jessica's been through, and Chloe won't even pretend to try to figure it out, has certainly informed her opinions. And whatever it was, it wasn't good.
"The only thing we can do is fight it," Chloe muses, finally pulling her gaze away from the other woman. "Take back whatever little bit of control we can."
no subject
She's run into it much too often that power most often means a lot of bullshit and using of people. Jessica has seen it time and time again.
Jessica tensed then, not quite looking at Chloe. "Yeah, trust me. I know that's all you can do, but that doesn't make it any easier." And it didn't mean one thing. "So, if they can take memories and cause us to be in weird places and see things that aren't real... how do we know they're not planting thoughts while they're at it?"
no subject
But she won't lie to her, either. It wouldn't be fair to do so, and she doesn't like lairs. It's one thing she and Lucifer have in common.
"It's... definitely possible." She nods stiffly, taking a breath before giving her attention back to Jessica. "It's happened, during events. There have been ones where they... make us think things we wouldn't usually. And others where they completely wipe our memories and replace them with something else. I know that probably isn't the answer you're looking for."
no subject
She makes a face, disgusted and irritated at the same time.
"I really fucking hate that part, you know? Not knowing what's real or not, what's them and what's you. Makes this place seem like a damn landmine, and everyone in it has a foot on the trigger."
no subject
Chloe doesn't have any proof of that but it's a theory, and will get filed away into all of her other theories she's come up with since arriving in Wonderland, although the viable ones are few and far between.
"We still have to find a way to live in it, though. As... Completely screwed up as it might be."
no subject
It's a bitterness that hits way too close to home for Jessica. Way too close.
"And not end up dead. That whole return of the living dead shtick they've got going on? There has to be a reason they want us to believe we can die, and that they hold the key to letting us live again." Because she isn't believing that they actually die. Naw, that so wasn't happening.
no subject
Chloe would know, after all. Not that it's something she's super thrilled about knowing, it's still one of the few things she's sure of in this place.
"They have control over everything here. Our lives, if we come back, how we come back, even our memories. I don't know how they do the things they do, but at this point I know that it happens. So just... Do you're best not to die. It sucks."
no subject
She pauses, considering her words careful, not wanting to admit too much. Not to anyone.
"I've had someone do that to me before. He lives... he lived in my damn head and he controlled me. No matter what I wanted to do, I couldn't. So I'm not buying a single damn word of this place. Not the least of all being that they can bring people back from the dead with our bodies perfectly intact, no wounds, no scars, nothing. We buy that, we've got to buy we could be clones and definitely not playing that game.
"But yeah, thanks. And I mean it. No plans on dying here. I hate having anything in my head as it is."
