"Wait, wait! Slow down!" Huffing in frustration Alistair flaps his hands at the other man, trying to get him to stop talking and give him a moment.

"Morrigan is here?" The question is asked with such utter disgust his feelings on the witch should be perfectly clear. "And Robyn too?" That's less bad. The exact opposite in fact. But he still has a crazy person to deal with before he can find her. His fellow Warden. Not Morrigan. She can stay in the crazy manor filled with crazy people for all he cares.

He watches Brennan dubiously, toying with one of the blocks of cheese in front of him as he thinks back. "The last thing I remember we were on our way to the Landsmeet."

"Morrigan was here," Brennan clarifies, reaching out and stealing a bite of cheese. "Briefly. Just enough to cause a stir, like she's known to do, before departing for... wherever she goes when she decides to up and vanish again. Apparently she has a knack for it." Maybe she came by it honestly, considering her heritage. Who knew? "Robyn is still here, yes. And she'll be thrilled to know you remember her. Morrigan not remembering her hit her harder than she would admit, I think. And look at that, you don't even have to worry about conflicting timelines, lucky you."

He hadn't either, until this place had decided to send Dorian home for two years, only to return with the news that someone was trying to bring about the end of the world again. As if once hadn't been bad enough.

"So she might still be sneaking about somewhere." Ugh. Not seeing Morrigan about was in some ways worse than being around her. At least when he could see her he could keep an eye on her. But enough about the witch.

"Why wouldn't I remember the Warden? She's only the one who's been leading the only effort to stop the Blight." Really. That was a pretty big thing to just forget somehow. Just Morrigan might have said she didn't - like that counted for anything. And the suggestion did nothing to make Brennan seem less crazy. Or rude for stealing his cheese.

"Morrigan claimed her Warden was someone else," Brennan answers with a shrug, looking a little confused by it himself. "She could have been lying, I suppose, but I don't know why she'd bother with the ruse of it, honestly. Finding someone familiar here is important to just about everyone. But this place... it finds strange twists of worlds and times. Things that shouldn't be possible. There's another here, someone who makes a name for themselves after the Blight is dealt with. The one that arrived here is vastly different from the one I encountered back home, so it's possible. Just... very strange."

He pushes away from the counter then and moves to the ice box, tugging it open and plucking out the first bottle of alcohol he sees, already having accustomed himself to how the magic in this place works. Luckily, it's one he recognizes from his own collection, some Rivaini brew he remembers being rather tasty.

"Want some?" he offers as he moves to the cupboard to fetch a pair of glasses.

"I- Sure." It won't make things more confusing so why not? Maybe if he drinks enough everything will finally start making sense. It's as good a plan as any.

"I thought I'd gotten used to strange," he grumbles, grabbing some bread he'd found earlier and carving off a few hunks. Some different cheeses to go with it and... yes, there was the ham too. Nudging the assortment towards Brennan should he want some, Alistair tucks in greedily.

"But just as soon as I think things can't get any stranger, boom! The Blight seems simple sometimes compared to everything else." Pausing in his whining completely justified griping, he adds, "You never told me who you are. You told me your name and that you're from the Free Marches but not how you know me or what you do or anything."

Besides the bits about Morrigan who knew a Warden that wasn't the one he knew and another person Brennan knew but didn't which he was going to ignore until it stopped being confusing.

"I...." Maker. He hated giving this explanation to anyone who came from before the Conclave. Because there were days that not even he believed half the shit that had happened, and he'd lived through it firsthand.

"Things get a lot weirder after the Blight, I'm afraid. Although most of the world has a quiet few years." Unless you lived in Kirkwall. "I work with a group called the Inquisition. If you're familiar with your Chantry history, you should know what that is, but if not... we basically exist to restore order to the world. Something it's badly needed over the past few years."

[personal profile] fatherlesskind 2015-11-23 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I've heard of the Inquisition. Or I guess the old one then?" Chantry history is something he's unfortunately well-educated in. Although he'd been a pretty poor student so the explanation comes just in time to save him from needing to ask what exactly they were for.

"It really gets that bad after the Blight? Which we definitely manage to stop?" He hadn't expected stopping the archdemon to magically fix everything - the damage wrought by the darkspawn and the civil war would still be left no matter what and that's just to start with - but to think that things get even worse is just... It's almost insulting. All that hard work and still terrible things happen? And more than a little disheartening if it's true.

"You did manage to stop it. And Ferelden's flourished quite well in the aftermath," Brennan answers as he pours them both a glass of wine and slides one over to the man. "You and your Lady Warden see to that. The Darkspawn threat is resolved, at the very least, but there are other problems arising. A few years ago, for me, the tensions between mages and Templars finally came to a head. A rebellion broke out and it spread like wildfire through the Circles. Everything dissolved into chaos. I'm not sure there's any country that's not full of very opinionated people on the matter."

Alistair takes the glass quietly, frowning at the contents as Brennan continues talking. "A rebellion in the Circles?" What would Wynne have to say about that? He doubts she'd approve of the idea and he'd have to agree with her. Especially after what he'd seen at the Ferelden Circle. "The Chantry wouldn't just sit by while that happened. Why wouldn't the templars just stop it?"

If such a thing really had happened - would happen? this was confusing - the templars should have been sent in to put a stop to it. Even if the situation was as bad as what they'd seen at Kinloch when they arrived, the templars could have just called for reinforcements and annulled the rebellious Circles. Not a good solution but what he'd expect them to do if such a thing were to happen.

"It was more complicated than that. And the Chantry was divided on how to handle it. The Templars believed they had the right of it and actually divided from the Chantry over the matter - there was talk of them deciding enough was enough and to annul all the mages. Much had come to light to cause an uproar from both sides, corruption in some of the Templar ranks, the Rite of Tranquility being abused and then the outright murder of many of the Grand Enchanters when they gathered together to discuss and protest some of the atrocities that had been committed. The whole matter was a complicated mess. So much so that the Divine herself got involved, called for a meeting of peace at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, to bring both sides together to end the war."

Of course, things had all gone downhill from there and Brennan makes a face, downing a mouthful of his own wine.

This just gets more and more overwhelming. It sounds like so many things go wrong and for the Divine herself to get involved? It would have to be serious.... Maker he's glad to have escaped the templars when he did. If it's true. There is one thing Brennan says that makes him wonder if it might not be.

"Did you say the Temple of Sacred Ashes? But we only just found-" Oh. Well, it was possible that Brother Genitivi had somehow gotten word out that quickly and that was how Brennan knew about the temple and he was making all that other stuff up. For some reason. Although if he were going to tell Alistair some fantastical story to mislead him he'd expect it to be a little more believable than being from years in the future after mages and templars had gone to war. So maybe not.

"Huh. This is weird."
