Cassie has made her living lying to others, but never before has her mind lied to her. She might, let's say, "internalize" some of the things she says, but she is never stupid enough to let herself believe that she is truly one person or another. She always knows who she is, though she will never tell anyone else the truth.

Which leads her to conclude that her new surroundings, with its gilded surfaces and palatial rooms, must be real.

She explores cautiously, finds a brochure that must be a joke. She reads it nonetheless. She eavesdrops on the other people she sees, tries to avoid them until she has some idea of what's going on.

The worst part is that she hopes this is real. If this is real, she's set for as long as she's here. A magical closet. A bed she never has to worry about getting kicked out of. All the clothes she could ever want.

Whatever these "events" are, she can live with those. She can put up with a lot if it means she gets to live here like a queen.
