[Toriel could've sworn she heard something- saw something out of the corner of her eye. ...But, she supposes it might have just been her imagination, and resumes her cooking.

After two minutes have passed, the incident has slipped entirely from her mind, when a small, yellow lizard monster steps into the kitchen.]

Oh, thank you very much!

My name is Toriel. Who are you?

[Alphys tries to smile, keep it together, but... Toriel doesn't recognize her. Which is fine, they only met once, but... maybe that's not it. Time to feel this out.]

Oh, uhm, I'm Alphys. I uh, I d-don't think we ever met, but uh... I was uhm, the Underground's r-royal scientist. For, uh, Asgore. I've, uh, h-heard a lot about you, and uhm... well, you're pretty recognizable!

[She hopes she doesn't look as awkward as this feels. Oops.]

...I see.

[Toriel's tone and expression noticeably changes at the mention of Asgore. She seems to have gotten a bit... colder.]

I was unaware they still talked much about me outside of the Ruins.

And what kind of work do you do for Asgore, as a scientist?

[Haha this is so much worse than their last meeting. Shit.]

U-Uh, well, I mean, people used to a-ask what happened to you, and... you know, m-missed you a lot.

[She fidgets a little. Alphys had sort of gotten the impression that she and Asgore didn't get along necessarily, but... ahhahahah oh jeez.]

But, uh, I w-was mostly studying, uhm, the nature of SOULs, and m-magic. Trying to, uh, b-break the barrier, you know.

Of course.

[She had hoped that maybe this woman's work was more peaceful. Maybe she was the scientist in charge of how to more efficiently use what little land they had to grow food, rather than one complicit with Asgore's cowardly and cruel plan, and as such, had neglected on saying any harsh comments before.]

So, did you simply study the SOULs of all those dead children? Or were you working on new ways to kill them for your own selfish needs?

[HAHA OH GOD ABORT ABORT, alphys looks like she might honestly faint. if she's going pale she sure hasn't noticed but she's absolutely digging her nails straight into her hand.]

N-New-- Kill! No, n-no, I don't-- I've never killed a--

[Oh wait, that's a lie, since she's been here. Thanks, Chara. The Toriel she knew also wasn't too happy to figure out about the Amalgamates, so maybe that's not a good start, either. God she's a mess.]

I was j-just studying, human m-magic, and SOUL p-power, and-- I don't m-make weapons, or, anything, I don't w-want to hurt anybody, I-- I w-was just trying to figure out, h-human magic so, t-the barrier could come down, a-and... nobody else w-would have to die.

[THIS IS A GRADE A TRAINWRECK AND SHE'S OFFICIALLY PANICKING]

[...Oops. Maybe that comment had been just a bit too harsh. She turns away from the stove, and reaches a hand over to rest on Alphys's shoulder. Slowly, deliberately, giving her time to let her know if she'd prefer not to be touched.]

Please, calm down. I was, perhaps... overzealous. I heard that you worked with Asgore, and I assumed the worst. I did not mean to upset you.

What you are doing... it sounds perfectly fine. If you are truly working towards a non-violent solution to that problem, then you have my respect. And my apologies!

[She still looks a little like she has tunnel-vision; she's not blameless on this manner, not on the long shot, but... oh jeez. There's no way this Toriel is from the same timeline, or she'd know. That raises a ton of questions and gives very few answers. In the meantime, Alphys tries to steady herself and not go totally nuts again.]

S-Sorry, I... by the time, uhm, I w-was made the royal scientist, t-there were already, uhm, s-six human souls. It h-had already happened. I... I c-can't speak for, uhm, anyone else, but... I d-don't like fighting. I didn't w-want anyone to die. It... the SOULs d-didn't seem like they were hurt by what I did. I just w-wanted to help. I'm sorry.

[Not that her experiments helped that, much. Or at all.]

T-Then again, from what uh... or, well, w-when I got here, that problem had already... k-kind of been solved? We had, uhm, a-already escaped the Underground.

[Toriel blinks, taking a moment to process her words.]

That's... wonderful, I suppose. But... where did you get the seventh soul?

[It really is great news, but... the idea of such a positive future, is... so at odds with what she believed to be her last thoughts, she can hardly believe it.]

Well, it's... t-that's kind of a complicated answer. We sort of, uhm... f-found a way to use everyone's souls, together, to approximate the s-seventh. It's a little hard to explain, and uh... honestly, I d-don't know exactly how it worked, either. I don't r-remember. Nobody, uhm, r-really does, except for Frisk-- uhm, the seventh human, who uh, fell down. They helped a-all of us to escape.

[It's not... a lie, exactly. That is what happened, in a rather roundabout manner.]

...Frisk helped you.

[It's obvious from Toriel's face that she finds that answer... very strange. The whole timeline thing had been mentioned, that they weren't as horrible in others, but pulling off something to that degree... It comes as something of a shock.]

Well. I'm glad that everything worked out for you.

Well... y-yeah. Uh. This might be kind of h-hard to explain, because uhm, y-you were there too? Technically. Uhm.

[She fidgets more, looking at her hands.]

It's, uhm... s-so, this place sometimes, uhm, t-takes people from multiple universes? So, uhm, we're not, exactly, the s-same people we might've known, but we share some of the same m-memories? And, uh, certain events m-might be different, or, uhm... you might r-remember things differently?

Yes. Frisk had told me about it already, in an attempt to appease me. Their manipulation of the timeline and their creation of multiples of them.

I found it somewhat difficult to believe, but. I suppose that your story is proof enough that it was true.

[Honestly, it's still pretty hard to believe. The barrier falling and nobody knowing why... Frisk helping... It sounds just a bit made up. But she supposes Alphys has no reason to lie.]

Well, uh, i-it's true! I mean, uhm, I d-don't remember all of them, but... from what I know, Frisk is o-one of my best friends. They helped me when I didn't t-think anyone could, and helped me t-talk to my crush, and... they're really kind. They've had some troubles in the p-past, but...

... I guess y-you don't remember, uhm, one of the good ones.

[She doesn't know how to ask what Toriel remembers. She's not sure it'd even be right. But Frisk means a lot to her, and she feels like they deserve a chance here.]

Frisk killed me in cold blood. I cannot say what happened after that, but given what I could feel when they attacked me... their intent to kill? I can only assume that they killed many, many others.

[It's not a secret or anything. It's just unpleasant to talk about, usually. But now, something about it, about talking to Alphys is making her smile. And besides- she feels like Alphys deserves a chance to know what else Frisk can be like.]

So, ha ha. No. I do not remember any good ones.

[She laughs, because... it really is kind of funny, isn't it? That things turned out so well for Alphys, that she knew a Frisk that was so kind and helpful... while the one that Toriel knew seemed inhuman. It's so funny, that she can't stop.]

[Oh holy hell. She knew Chara was capable of doing things like that- obviously, since they cut down her girlfriend and tried to kill her, but that's not something she'd bring up right now anyway. But she does look shocked, and... pretty sad, honestly.]

I'm... I'm s-so sorry. The Frisk I know w-would never do that, and... t-the Frisk here has, uhm, only e-ever been nice to me, and never h-hurt anyone. I know, uhm... that's probably hard to believe, f-from what you've seen.

[She fidgets a little more, claws gently clacking together as they touch.]

I, uh... w-well, if you're ever curious about uhm, o-other things, I'd be happy to a-answer any questions, or, uhm, s-something. We had only m-met a few times, from what I remember, b-but, uhm, you seemed r-really nice. I mean, you are still r-really nice! Oh jeez.

[She's bad at this.]

That's how they seem at first, isn't it? Ha ha...

[Her chuckling dies down, as she turns her attention back to her cooking. It wasn't... the most pleasant sound. Not something she should laugh about. Better to distract herself from it, from how she'd felt after being struck.]

If you want to tell me more, that is fine. But I do not have any questions.

Dwelling on what could have been will not do me any good. My ending was different than the one that you got. I can only try and make the best of what I have here.
