[Ha... not enough of the soul's residue had left him, it seems. He still feels a building anxiety in his chest, taking a small step back. He barely even realizes he does it.

But as Frisk goes on, his expression darkens - literally. Asriel's eyes go entirely black, the corners of his mouth spreading over his cheeks like a vine being pulled apart. The pitch of his voice turns higher for just a moment, just a brief moment, and his head turns downward.]

Chara's GONE.

[determinedest]

[Frisk jerks back at the abrupt nature of the shift, that splitting blackness horribly reminiscent of the cruel, floral abomination that glared at them and taunted them and mocked them for their pain and their pity.]

They're - they're not. They were never gone! They were with me, the whole time!

[The smile keeps spreading across his face before he finally snaps back to reality, clutching a shaking claw over his muzzle and taking a few deep breaths. It'd... happened a lot, over the past few days. Don't lose control. Don't become Flowey again not now, not now--]

Sorry. Frisk, I'm sorry, I...

[He sighs again, closing his eyes. His mouth returns to normal, the life comes back to his expression. And when he speaks again, his voice is normal.

The claw lowers.]

How... what do you mean, Frisk? Chara's... how?

I fell on their grave.

[They're still quaking from that abrupt tonal shift, lower lip quivering. And the words rush out, unbroken, an unfiltered stream of their racing consciousness.]

I fell on their grave when I landed Underground and I think they, I think they were still there after everything, and we were together the whole time, from the very first moment. They - they helped me, and sometimes they didn't, but we're - we're friends now, in Wonderland, and it's okay now, it's okay!

I... I remember. The bad timelines. I remember when it wasn't really you, but... them.

[It's something he doesn't like thinking about. That had all eventually gone really, really badly.]

They took your body. They'd killed everyone. They tried to kill me too but I don't remember what happened after that.

But I thought it was just those timelines.

N-no. It...it wasn't. They did help, a lot of the time. Not always during the bad times.

Sometimes the bad times were me, too.

[Hugging themselves again, arms wrapped tightly around their middle. It's always painful to admit it aloud.]

[With that, Asriel just... laughs quietly. Though there's no real humor in the situation. During those timelines, he'd... encouraged them, to do those bad things. He'd helped them, clung to them like a stubborn weed. He wanted everything to be destroyed.

And it all backfired, in the end.

Neither one of them were free from guilt, were they?]

Frisk... can I ask you a question?

...yeah. 'Course you can.

[They're a little scared to answer, but...well, they owe him this. They owe him a lot.

It's not easy to think about Chara and...and everything related to them. But if they're going to do this, they have to start with the truth.]

[The overlap between Frisk and Chara is a perplexing question, even on a good day.]

I always figured that it was them helping me at the end. Knowing the names of all your attacks and, and everything.

We all made a lot of mistakes, okay? But it's - we're just - we're just kids.

Yeah... y-yeah, I guess so.

[It doesn't make him feel any less guilty, though. If Chara heard him, if they remember... he needs to. Apologize. If they're still willing to listen.]

I did... I did so much, Frisk, and. Do you think they'd want to see me again, after that?

Of course they do.

[The answer is instantaneous.]

They...they're not always the best at showing it. But they still love you a lot. You're still family to them.

[His voice breaks. His arms are shaking and he tries to compose himself, tries to remember where he is, who he is, and... Chara doesn't hate him. They would never... right?]

I just... I miss them, Frisk.

[They offer a faint, watery smile.]

Our room looks just like yours from New Home.

I thought, if I ever saw them again...

They'd hate me. Or at least be angry. I did a lot of weird stuff as a flower, and before that, too.

[He takes a breath, struggling to compose himself.]

This is so much to take in at once, Frisk.

It's okay. It's - it'll be okay. We can take it slow, okay?

[They can fall into the rhythm of being the consoling friend easily. It's better than trying to be anything else.]

They're still - adjusting too. But I know they'll forgive you, I know they will.
