[He's kidding. Mostly. At least he's trying to make fun of the very real possibility that at least one of them might get eaten by--whatever's down there. Foggy's--not too keen on dying today, especially not at the hands of something with very sharp teeth. Or claws. Or--

So what Matt is basically saying, is at least we'll have a heads up before they decide to make their move.
[ her laugh falls a little short, though. for all that karen doesn't mind jumping headfirst into danger, quips are not really her m.o. ]

[You hear that? That is the most indignant huff he has.]
But hey, at least me getting eaten won't be in vain, right? [He regrets that joke the moment it comes out of his mouth, because there's a noise from somewhere very far ahead of them, something that sounds definitely like it has the capacity to eat him.
Suddenly it doesn't seem so funny anymore.]
...probably somebody else who thought it'd be a great idea to come down here too? [He hopes so. But the way he steps closer to Matt and Karen and shines his flashlight on the road ahead of them says he doesn't quite believe himself.]
