[ dipper, violet's beginning to think you speak her language. encouraged and glad to be in like company, violet explains, ] Well, I thought about constructing a typical steering feature, [ she leans over to demonstrate the mechanism, her tied hair falling over her shoulder ] but this should maximize range and capability, not to mention fun. What kind of non-traditional objects have you incorporated before?

Children are often found in places they shouldn't be. [ this is an unfortunate truth violet has learned. just recently, violet found herself in disguise as a two-headed person at a carnival run by a fake foreigner. before that, she was an unwilling patient at a hospital that was burned to the ground by a surgeon and his troupe. neither of these experiences were in the best places for her, or for her siblings.

her throat closes with her tears, for the best place for her and her siblings has always been with their parents. not a carnival or a hospital, nor a sailboat rental shop, or here, in the middle of a whimsical and vaguely sinister novel. she's been in enough of those.

[ The wording throws Chloe off kilter a bit. She's hardly thinking of this place as a new life, or her home a prior one. She just thinks of this as an annoying blip in time until she can find a way back to her daughter. ]

I'm a cop. [ Not was. Am. It's been such an integral part of her identity for so long, she's not sure she'd even be very good at doing anything else. ] I'm probably looking for something a little more specific than barista.

[He studies the image for a moment, eyes narrowing. He's not all that surprised that someone from his own world might end up here, but he may not have counted on this.]

[And one that seems to be familiar enough with him to greet him like that. So that makes narrowing the list easier--]

[ A voice breaking through the silence throws her off and Chloe starts, clearing her throat and turning around to look at the woman behind her. She's trying not to blush, knowing that her piano playing isn't exactly decent, and she hadn't intended for anyone to hear it. ]

Just the one, actually. [ She shrugs gently, her hands folding into her lap. ] I took classes when I was younger, but that was the only one that stuck. Do you play?

[ She stops mid-note, her fingers slipping over a few keys as she swung around to look at him. Well, shit. That was one face she wasn't expecting to see.

Once her surprise wears off, though, suspicion sets into her face. She jumps up from the bench, striding across the floor, her finger pointed at his chest. ]

Please tell me you didn't have something to do with this.

[He nodded, shifting his weight in his seat but not yet getting up.]

Yes. I only woke up here a short time ago.

[ Chloe can't quite return his smile, her eyes instead studying him closely. At least he had responded, since she would hardly have done so herself, especially to a video that cringingly awkward. ]

I'm pretty sure anyone who knows me would find it hard to believe I could invent a job. [ It's a self-deprecating quip made in jest, but there is something in her eyes that makes it seem like she could honestly believe it. Chloe had spent more of her life being relatively... well, boring. About as boring as basket weaving sounded. ]

I prefer something with a little more guidance.

[It was...a small comfort to know that he could still catch someone like Barbara Keane off-guard, even if the question had been surprisingly genuine. Perhaps there was still a part of him that saw her as the ally she had once been. Wondered if that Barbara was somewhere deep inside.]

[Or it could have been another means of assessing his situation. Whether or not she had been harmed in any way would go a long way in telling him how much danger he was in.]

[Right then, without knowing the whole story, his best strategy was to remain civil until given a reason not to.]

[His lips are spread in a smarmy grin as she gets to her feet and stalks toward him, not flinching in the slightest as she points at him and throws out her baseless accusations.]

Of course not. How could I have possibly concocted this kind of madness? [His expression changes quickly to one of irritation.] I'll have you know I've been stuck in this bloody place for over half a year now. Good to see you too, by the way.

No... But I wasn't exactly expecting you, either!

[ Wasn't that the way it worked, though? Something completely bizarre happens, and here comes Lucifer, with that shit-eating grin and pressed suit, and at the moment, Chloe is really trying not to just haul off and punch him in the arm.

She gets distracted by what he said, though, and the thought fades from her head as she stares at him in confusion. ]

You're joking, right? I just saw you yesterday. There's no way you've been here for six months. [ Confusion turns to concern quickly and she moves towards him, her hand raising up to hover near his shoulder. ] Are you okay? Did you hit your head maybe?

Ah, so it is true.

[His eyes light up at her words, and he completely ignores the fact that she's asking him a question at all, because of course he didn't hit his head. He can't exactly get a concussion, now can he?]

Friend of mine informed me that time doesn't progress where we've come from while we're here. Now I suppose I have proof! Isn't that convenient? You haven't had to miss me at all!

[Georgia doesn't let just anyone see her actual human emotions past angry and blandly professional. To likely it'll come across as a weakness.]

Probably. It's a magic library, and yes, I realize how that sounds. [She scowls briefly. She's been here several months and she's still not used to magic being a thing she has to account for.] Things... aren't always where they're supposed to be and it changes shape and size. Frustrating as hell. But it has documents from lots of different universes.

[ The old adage, "How can I miss you if you won't go away?" probably would have drifted through Chloe's mind if she wasn't busy trying to make heads or tails of what he was telling her. Something about the way time was progressing, and something to do with this place, and something something okay wait let's take a step back here. ]

[ She steps forward, pressing her lips together thoughtfully and pushing a lock of hair from her face. Her voice was lowered, her eyes staring up at him with patience. ] Does this have something to do with, you know... The. Devil thing?

Really? Inventiveness is the best thing humanity has going for it most of the time, I find.

[And they change much more easily than gods, even when they think they can't. He studies her in return, eyes slightly narrowed, lips still quirked up, an odd expression on a teenage face. He's still curious what makes someone so convinced they need someone else to tell them what to do, though it's not a problem he's ever suffered.]

I guess, maybe when I was younger.

[ No need to mention her brief dabble in the acting business, although maybe that had a big part to play in how she was now. Once half the world has seen your boobs on the big screen, following the rules doesn't seem like a bad plan. ]

I'm a parent. And I work in law enforcement. I like to set a good example and part of that is following the rules.

[He keeps smiling, more lightly than he usually would. His younger self hadn't really been all that shy, either, and he'd never taken Daimon's grouching all that seriously.]

I'm not sure there are any laws here, you know. Even the natural ones seem a little out of kilter at times.

[Which is both more and less upsetting to Loki than it would be to most. He's better, these days, but he's never liked following the rules all that much. On the other hand, not having any to push against is a very strange thing.

He should probably be a little more careful talking to someone who works in law enforcement, but it's never been able to hold him anyway.]

Perhaps you'll just have to find a new way to set a good example and make that your job. I'm sure there's a lot of people here who need one, although I'm not one of them.

I'm not surprised ice didn't have the integrity needed against ice. [ there's laughter in her voice but certainly not on dipper's account. she's enjoying his stories with an earnest and listening ear. from trashcan lids to the leaf of the dining room table, she's imagining just what incredible successes and failures resulted from each and considering the inventive possibilities.

but there is one more portion of dipper's answer that stays with her: the mention of a friend or a sister, maybe. family. violet takes a short moment to find the courage to ask. ] So you're—

Are you alone here too? [ is she alone is being alone? ]

I don't think calling people a generic insult is usually considered terribly effective.

[He makes a slightly dismissive "you know" gesture, hand held palm up. He's actually starting to enjoy himself a little, but there's no point quitting just yet.]

Have you considered taking your highly important research somewhere less public? Then you might be less upset by other people also using the space.

[As she pointed out, it is a public place. He has as much right to be there as she does.]
