I mean, it's not as if Arkham doesn't have a history of letting out those that aren't quite all there despite their release. I mean, look at Nygma... and Penguin.

[Not to mention herself, but she wasn't going there.]

[Somehow, the compliment didn't carry the same weight it once might have.]

Both of their releases were publicized. Tetch's would be too. I would have heard.

True. If he was released above board and not, you know, escaped.

Come on. You would rather believe we're been kidnapped to Wonderland than this is all in your head?

[She wasn't sure which she believed, but she was afraid to believe it was real, because any minute it could all turn on her and just be a game.]

I would absolutely believe I had been kidnapped--[again]--and that the place they had brought me is called Wonderland.

[That didn't have to mean it was the Wonderland.]

What I won't do is make too many assumptions without first gathering as much information on the situation as possible.

It's not called Wonderland. It's not a name, Bruce. It is Wonderland.

[Tone dropping slightly, staring at him intently as that playful humor fell away.]

Find your room yet? How it's adapted for you? Talked yet to anyone about the mirrors? Make all the assumptions you want. It will still change. No matter what reality you find, don't count on it.

[Which was aggravating her, and delighting her at the same time.]

[He didn't respond. Not right away. The things she was saying...they both made sense and didn't. His room. Because there really was no other way to describe it. Everything from the furniture to the decor was eerily similar to his quarters at the Manor. And what was that about talking to mirrors?]

Then why are you here?

[They had no personal connection. Even if this did somehow involve Tetch...why bring Barbara into it? There were far more effective ways to get into his head.]

That's the million dollar question!

Well, there's a few of them. Why? How? Not when though. When doesn't matter. I'm not sure there's a lot of when that matters here.

[She likely wasn't making any more sense than Tetch might, but it wasn't wrong. Even if it made no sense.]

Like you, I found myself here. Asked around a lot, but mostly just getting what sounds like a party line. We're trapped here. We can't go back until this place gets done with us. Time back home is frozen.

That's my favorite one. I mean, come on. A whole city just frozen in time? Really?

It sounds like something out of Arkham, all right.

[If not Tetch, than...someone else. Who even knows what kind of abilities the inmates who'd been experimented on had developed?]

[Still, he remained skeptical. Barbara here did minimize the possibility of all this being in his own mind. Which meant it was real. And so was she. And so was any potential danger he might be in from whoever it was she was working with. Unless she really had been kidnapped too. Meaning they could both be in trouble.]

That question though, that caught her off guard. Not even able to school her features for a minute before catching herself, all smiles and playful looks. As if he hadn't caught her off guard with that question.]

No one has put a gun in my face, or threatened my longevity, so I can say with all honesty, no. Though I'm assured that will change sooner than later.

Our hosts, the land, whatever it is... [Said with a wave of her hand and a roll of her eyes to go with those words.] Apparently are about as settled as politics in Gotham.

In other words, not at all.

[The underbelly of Gotham would certainly love it here. All that uncertainty and potential for chaos.]

[It was...a small comfort to know that he could still catch someone like Barbara Keane off-guard, even if the question had been surprisingly genuine. Perhaps there was still a part of him that saw her as the ally she had once been. Wondered if that Barbara was somewhere deep inside.]

[Or it could have been another means of assessing his situation. Whether or not she had been harmed in any way would go a long way in telling him how much danger he was in.]

[Right then, without knowing the whole story, his best strategy was to remain civil until given a reason not to.]

[Wonderland was definitely designed for people like Barbara. Which was what made it interesting to have someone like Bruce Wayne there.]

Well thank you. You always were a gentleman. Which is why you being here should be interesting.

[She sighed, rolling her eyes, but she was going to be a bit more straight with him.]

You're not going home though. Not unless whoever is behind all of this decides to send you home. And things are going to get bad before they get better. Think of it like Gotham and how we just keep having one thing after another. It's like that here, and it can be bad.

[Look, she could still be kind.]

I'm not afraid.

[He knew she didn't need the reassurance, but it was a statement he had to make anyway. Whatever Wonderland could throw at him, he doubt it would be any more dangerous than the Court of Owls.]

And that is what makes you a danger to yourself and others.

Everyone should know fear at one time or another, Bruce. If you don't, you make mistake. Fear keeps you sharp.

[Not that much ever slowed her down, fear or not.]

[She was...trying to antagonize him. That's what it seemed to him. He refused to break.]

I know what fear is. I've felt it more times than you or anyone else would think.

It's your life. Half of Gotham are fools, rushing in where angels fear to tread. You all act like everyone else deserves Arkham, but the truth is? No one in Gotham is sane enough to not belong there. It's why we stay.

[Shrugging as she said it, but believing it. She'd seen enough in Gotham to believe it, and wasn't bothered by her own sanity. Whether she had any or not. Of course, she embraced her life now, all she had done, and all she was prepared to do.

Maybe not so different than Bruce in determination. Except she was looking to drag Gotham down further, while, in her mind, Bruce was fighting a near impossible uphill battle. Just like Jim.]

I think if you had seen enough, you wouldn't stay in Gotham. Same if you were any saner than me, or anyone else.

Wonderland will give you reason to though. I assume you've read the book?

[Which definitely spoke of a place as close to Arkham as anything else.]

Because best I can tell, it's not a cute name. It is Wonderland. Cheshire Cat, Duchess, madness and all.

Even if what you say is true--[And he wasn't dismissing the notion entirely. Merely remaining a healthy skeptic.]--then how can you be certain the parallels are exact?

It's important to know what we're up against. It's also important not to adhere too strictly to one world if there are differences in this one.

I'd rather see for myself before making too many assumptions.
