[ despite her relative smorgasbord of items, violet is not expecting to attract any attention, though she would not hope against it. on the contrary, she's content to work quietly, but the interest of a boy—klaus' age, she thinks—sparks something small and bright inside of her.

it's been so long since she talked to anyone much, let alone a peer. ] I am, [ she smiles ] and I don't think there's anything wrong with puns.

[ after a moment of uncertainty she adds, ] I'm Violet.

Dipper. [He takes this as an invitation to sit down on the stairs and watch her work.] This is way more elaborate than any sled design I've seen. I've experimented with sliding on non-traditional objects, but I've never made my own.

It's nice to meet you, Dipper. [ dipper, violet's beginning to think you speak her language. encouraged and glad to be in like company, violet explains, ] Well, I thought about constructing a typical steering feature, [ she leans over to demonstrate the mechanism, her tied hair falling over her shoulder ] but this should maximize range and capability, not to mention fun. What kind of non-traditional objects have you incorporated before?

All sorts! Trashcan lids, lunch trays, laundry baskets... Mabel tried cardboard once, but it didn't work great. It was still better than the one I built out of ice. That was... [His expression goes grim and he shakes his head.] Ice, it turns out? Does not need more ice. Cushions, bed sheets, a leaf from the dining room table, which Mom and Dad were not happy about....

[He shrugs, grinning.]

Lots of things.

I'm not surprised ice didn't have the integrity needed against ice. [ there's laughter in her voice but certainly not on dipper's account. she's enjoying his stories with an earnest and listening ear. from trashcan lids to the leaf of the dining room table, she's imagining just what incredible successes and failures resulted from each and considering the inventive possibilities.

but there is one more portion of dipper's answer that stays with her: the mention of a friend or a sister, maybe. family. violet takes a short moment to find the courage to ask. ] So you're—

Are you alone here too? [ is she alone is being alone? ]

No, I've got family. My sister and my great uncles mostly.

[He hesitates as he catches that look and the word too. He looks over at her, expression fading into sympathy.]

...you are, though, aren't you?

[ it's difficult at times to be happy for the fortune of someone else. it's no small comfort to have others you love and trust with you in uncertain and foreign places, and while violet would prefer that she and her siblings were in a safe and familiar place together, she wishes they could be with her here and now.

her smile is a struggle, but it is there. violet collects herself and answers, ] I am, but— [ she reaches forward to pick up a piece of wood and offers her hammer to dipper ] —maybe we can all be less alone, if you want to help me with this sled? [ she is hopeful, just as she and her siblings were hopeful, that one can find friends even in the darkest of places. ]

[krmvgivv]

[Dipper grins back as he takes the hammer, scooching down so he can start working with her.] Definitely. And you can meet Mabel later, if you want. She's... hard to miss. [Very sparkly and loud.] There are a lot of kids around here. It's not the same as whoever you're missing, I know, but it's something?

[tiesuphair]

[ it is something. it's something that dipper accepts the hammer, a word which here means "violet's earnest offer for friendship." it's something, even though she might be adrift in an unknown place without klaus and sunny, that she is not alone. ] Yes, [ violet says, and thinks of burnt quesadillas and her father. she thinks of klaus, and what he reminded her of a long time ago: ] It's better than nothing.

[ perhaps she is only trying to convince herself of that, but like sunny might say, you can make delicious lemonade out of lemons with the right ingredients. violet arranges the wooden board in place and lines up the nail for dipper. ] I'd love to meet Mabel. What's she like, being hard to miss?

[Better than nothing. Dipper still hopes, for her sake, that whoever she's missing shows up. He'll be a friend to her and watch out for her, but he knows it won't be the same.]

Well, she's my twin, so she looks a lot like me, but a girl. She knits a new sweater every day and can punch really hard.
