[Tim appreciated that Bruce didn't dismiss his words out of hand. It made the whole conversation that much easier, to not have to prove the unprovable.]

No, I don't think I would have been. [He smiled a little.] Which might explain why you don't recognize me. We're kind of friends, by my time.

And yeah, he does. Definitely one of the best commissioners Gotham's ever had.

[He nodded absently, mind still whirring.]

Good. That's good. For him. And Gotham. He deserves it.

[Jim had been working so hard even since Bruce knew him. Trying to do the right thing. Fighting against literal insanity. Being falsely convicted and attacked so many times, even Bruce had lost count. And yet, the last he knew, Jim was still at the station. Still fighting for Gotham.]

I have to admit, I am tempted to ask just how we met...but I'm not entirely sure I should. If you really are from a time in my future.

[Even though he was so, so curious. And had way more questions besides that.]

[That got a grin from Tim. Of course he wanted to know everything. So would Tim, in his place. It just wouldn't do either of them any good.]

If it helps, I don't think we get to remember any of this when we get home, so you can ask away. It just might get kind of. Complicated.

You wouldn't happen to know a woman named Selina Kyle?

Um. We've met a few times.

[Was he blushing? He hoped he wasn't blushing.]

Uh. Yeah. She's fine. Great.

[He paused, then frowned. Okay, no, the timeline on this was way off. He knew that his Bruce hadn't met Selina until he was Batman, and the boy in front of him was way too young for that.]

Wait, how do you know Selina?

[Can't stop, won't stop. Ever.]

She's my...

[Although his voice trailed off, unsure of how to finish that sentence. Girlfriend was the first word that came to mine, but he knew Selina would hate it. She didn't like labels. Even when Ivy had asked, she'd denied they were a couple. Even though they definitely were. Probably.]

...we've known each other for a while now.

Although she's currently mad at me. [Again.]

[Wow, Selina and Bruce were fighting. There's the biggest surprise that ever wasn't. Tim was almost relieved, because that at least fit within the paradigm he was used to for the two of them. But there was a lot more that was confusing.]

...I don't think the two of us are from the same universe.

[Bruce didn't seem all that surprised either, though perhaps for different reasons.]

May I ask what drew you to that conclusion, exactly?

[He shrugged a little, giving him a wry grin.] The Bruce I know didn't meet Selina until they were both adults. Maybe he might have heard of Jervis Tetch when he was younger--though I doubt it--but I'm pretty sure about Selina.

[Again, not so surprising given Tim's noted reactions up until this point, though a new, far more pressing question came to mind. If he hadn't met Selina until they were both older....]

There was something that happened to a while back. To my parents. Selina and I met...because she's claimed she was there.

[Which he now knew to be a lie. Or thought he knew; after her initial "confession", she'd never again insisted otherwise. Of course, by that point, it hasn't seemed to matter so much. Their relationship had evolved so far past the circumstances of that fateful night. Still...]

Does this mean...in the Gotham you're from...they might still be alive?

[At first, Tim was confused. Something happened that Selina might have witnessed? And then Bruce asked his question, and he felt like he'd been struck. Of course. Of course Bruce would want to know that. And Tim wished he could give him good news, but of course.

He couldn't.

He shook his head once.]

...I'm sorry, Bruce.

[In some ways, it was like losing them all over again. Only he was more prepared. Mentally. Emotionally. His training and recent experiences...they really had made him stronger.]

[His eyes averted only for a moment before returning to Tim. Hints of sadness remained, but they were well hidden beneath a stoic, calm mask.]

I see.

[For all the differences they had found in their respective Gothams, that had to remain a constant, didn't it?]

Did I...was the person responsible ever found?

Yes. He was arrested that night. I take it... that's not the case in your universe.

It took a long time for me to even be able to get answers on why it happened. Even then...he was never arrested. He killed himself.

[That was... a little confusing to Tim, actually. Answers? What kind of answers was he looking for? Random, senseless violence was just that--random and senseless.]

That's. Definitely different.

I believe we've already established there are a number of differences between your Gotham and mine.

[He wasn't being sarcastic. If anything, he was agreeing with Tim. Just...the weight of the conversation was very heavy on his shoulders, considering there were many aspects of his parents' murder that he was still dealing with.]

What about the others? The...ones who hired him?

[Hired? He shook his head, frowning.]

...It wasn't like that. It was a mugging. Random violence. The kind of thing that happens every day.

[Which was kind of a horrifying thing to say, but... It was Gotham. That kind of thing did happen every day. It was... why there was a Batman and a Robin and everyone else.]

[He almost couldn't help the long stare that followed. A mugging. His parents had been killed...by a random thief. No conspiracy. No real reason. A freak chance occurrence. Wrong place, wrong time.]

[Was that better or worse than the truth he'd uncovered back home?]

No, that's...

[Not right.]

...what about the Court?

[The question was out of his mouth before he could stop himself. He had to know.]

[Court obviously means the judiciary system, right?]

[It dawned on Bruce somewhere along the line that he might have been taking a risk mentioning them here and now. But this wasn't Gotham, and in theory, he should be beyond even their reach. So he kept pressing.]

I meant the Court of Owls.

Do they...have you never heard of them?

[He shook his head slowly.]

...Sorry, no. Can you explain?

I genuinely wish I could. There's still so much I'm trying to learn about them. All I know is that they're everywhere. Controlling my parents' company. Controlling Gotham. Everything.

They're the ones who hired the assassin who killed my parents.

[There was a part of Tim that wanted to say that sounded insane, but Gotham was just too weird sometimes to dismiss the idea out of hand. And he trusted Bruce--even a teenaged Bruce--to know what he was talking about.]
