[He nods, stepping away from her to busy himself with what he'd originally come into the kitchen for: preparing a cup of tea. Of course, not being rude he thinks up a kettle large enough to easily hold water for two, setting up the thing with quick and practiced motions.]

I suppose I can do so, assuming that it remains irrelevant. Believe me, Captain Janeway, you'll likely find few that understands the importance of preserving time so well as I.

[He doesn't mean to sound arrogant or to brag; it's simply a matter of fact in Rip's experience. The vast majority of people would choose heroics, while some able to turn away from those in need go too far, and instead find themselves willing to manipulate history to their own whims.

Rip's walked the fine line between for many years now. It's very much part of who he is.]

That said, you've already surmised that I alone don't hold the key to getting free of this dimension. I doubt you'll find you do either. No one person seems capable of it, regardless of their abilities or expertise.

[With the kettle set to heat, Rip reaches up into the cabinet again, this time for the assorted items one might expect be used to make a proper cup of tea.]

Cooperation is going to prove necessary. Not that you have to take my word for it, of course.

[Time, however, would lend credence to his claim.]

Would you care for a cup of tea?

[ and yet, that doesn't stop her from rolling her eyes the moment his back is to her. she's heard that line before. forgive her if she's doubtful of it -- of this entire situation. ]

I'm more of a coffee kind of gal, but in the absence off... [ that shrug of one still-bare shoulder, that's a yes. she'll concede to tea for a moment, even though the pounding in her head is screaming for the soothing black bitterness of coffee devoid of cream, sugar, and all other flavorings. ]

And I didn't say I did, but I don't give up easily. Regardless of whether or not others are willing to comply and work together on this project, I'm not settling in without a fight.

[Oh, is that how it is to be? Too bad Rip doesn't see it. He might offer some dry commentary on her disbelief--at least of him. The situation itself is, in fact, entirely insane. She's got every right to doubt that.

But there remains proof of it all around them. She mentions wanting coffee, and his lips twist into a momentary grin: some rivalries, it seems, would withstand the test of time and space alike.]

There isn't a true absence of it, or nearly anything else you could think up here. [Of course, Rip isn't going to be the one to wish for it. If the Captain is truly a scientist as she claims, then she'll no doubt appreciate the opportunity to experiment.] You just haven't wished for it yet.

[He glances over his shoulder at that, and yes, that would be an amused glint in his eyes--especially if she takes his comment as well as he expects her to.

That would be not well at all, for the record.]

"Whether or not others are wiling to comply?" [Yes, she'd continued on, but those are the words that has Rip specifically turning around to face her once more. He leans back against the counter, his arms folded across his front as he considers that this woman may be in for a harder time than even he has had to face.]

Oh, you are indeed a Captain--but you should keep in mind that the people here are not your crew. They are a varied and diverse set of captives who often won't care what brand of expertise you possess, nor will many of them be impressed by your rank.

They are often slow to trust, and cautious when it comes to just whom they cooperative with. [Granted, Rip is hardly a people person--but given Janeway's approach with him, he can't see her winning the trust of the population easily either.

"I don't see a reason to elaborate;" Rip has to wonder if this is what the others feel like when they talk to him.]

[ janeway shakes her head, a smirk slowly spreading onto her features as she plants her hands on her hips. ]

You have a very crude definition of what being a captain is, and I don't appreciate it being applied to myself. Nor do I like your assumption that I would force the hands of those who are unwilling to participate in whatever efforts I help to devise. That's their choice, one I wouldn't necessarily agree with, but would respect and defend nonetheless.

It’s less about force and more about expectation, actually.

[He glances at the kettle briefly, although it’s taking its time. That’s what he gets, he supposes, for opting for a more traditional route. Ah well.]

As for any offense, I do apologize. Please let me know where I’m wrong in my assessment: [He turns back towards her once more, loosely crossing his arms across his front.] You’re experienced, intelligent, likely more than capable of leading a group of people towards a common goal. You can think of solutions others might not see--[said with a nod towards the microwave]--but at the same time you don’t act without reason. Your risks are calculated, done with consideration towards the, ah, Temporal Prime Directive, as you called it? Likely other regulations and factors as well. You have perfectly good rationale behind what you do or don’t do, and what information you share and keep secret—and above all? You’re stubborn as hell, to put it bluntly.

[Maybe moreso than Rip—who in so many ways could have just been describing himself.]

Any of that not ring true to you?
