[ this time, when she glances over her shoulder, she looks at the mansion's grounds with new eyes. well -- ever-so-slightly new eyes. this time, her gaze can appreciate that maybe (somehow) this means something to peter quill.

and if it means something to him (truly, completely, genuinely) then perhaps it ought to mean something to her also. she betrays that first bleeding edge of acceptance. it helps to hear him talk about his mother. she likes the threadbare notes in his voice whenever he dares to divulge something new about her. it's when she's certain he's at his most honest.

gamora approaches by a step. ]

I find it hard to believe all of this is from a -- a story. [ but her head tilts and her guard softens. ] What else do you know about it?

Groot, you should really watch your language. I think I heard Rocket wanting to wash your mouth out with soap the other day — and trust me, soap doesn't taste nice. It doesn't matter where you buy it, what it smells like, or how expensive it is. It all tastes like crap.

[ he pokes his tongue out and mouths yuck. peter thinks he got most of what groot's saying. at first, it'd been difficult to understand him, but once he got to know groot and he listened, he was able to hear him. when they first met he was definitely able to see him, but everything else? he didn't really appreciate him for his innocent, tree-like ways until he was stuck with him as a friend. ]

[ his face scrunches up in offense. ] Hell no! Why did you even — What would make you think that!? Gamora doesn't dance! People who don't dance don't have good taste in music, Groot. Learn that. If people don't know how to do the basics of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or Tina Turner's "Nutbush" then they are not people worth respecting!

[astrological]

[ peter's looking out at wonderland while gamora goes through her necessary motions. wonderland had almost felt like ego's world — beautiful and rich and out of this world impossible. but he trusts wonderland, because it belongs to mom. mom wouldn't let him read a book if she thought it was dangerous, and he likes to think that she hadn't told him about his dad's true essence because she knew, deep down, that despite how much she loved him, he wasn't a good man — thing — being. ]

[ peter trusts his mom, so that's why he trusts wonderland with gamora — because mom trusted it with him. ]

Well. [ he settles his shoulders, squinting for a moment as he tries to pick the best parts of the story. ] There's a croquet game with the queen. You need to watch out for her because she likes to behead people and you've got a nice head. And there's tea-time, although I can't remember the exact time it happens. But there's a lot of food, and the Mad Hatter's there. I think he'd be pretty cool. Maybe he'd give us a hat or a scone or something. [ he shrugs his shoulders. ] And there's stuff you shouldn't eat and drink …

[ he looks at her then, eyes almost popping out of his head. ] Have you eaten anything since you got here? Don't tell me you ate something that said "SHRINK ME"!

[ ignorant of the wheels turning in his head, she finds herself (once again) bewitched by the frenetic pace at which peter races through another fractal of terran culture. this one seems altogether less likely than all the others. then again, it's meant to come from a story. and although he tells it artlessly, she decides already that she likes his telling best.

(not that she'll inform him of that preference. never.)

gamora watches him while he talks. she reads every shrug and squint -- looking for truth, or maybe a glimmer of nostalgia. his, of course. she's got so little of her own; she rather likes piggybacking on his better memories.

but then he gets ridiculous again. and with a growling sigh, she asks: ] I'm the same height I've always been. Aren't I?

[ so, no, obviously -- she's not eaten anything that said 'shrink me'. but maybe she's had some currant scones with blackberry jam. they were delicious. ]

[ peter squints and studies gamora, standing on the tips of his toes, then lowering himself so he's looking up at her. he measures her up to what he knows of her — she's green and statuesque. it eventually just becomes an excuse to look at her, so peter squints his eyes and tries to smoothy move away from what he'd found himself doing. ]

[ he hums. ] Hmm … [ and reluctantly: ] I guess … I think I need to keep an eye on you. You may shrink and become Groot size, and my ears aren't equipped to pick up [ his voice goes shrill in his imitation of "girly": ] "I am Gamora!" [ his voice goes back to normal. ] Just be careful of what you eat, okay? If you ended up shrinking and being stepped on then I'd be really sad. Not that I think you'd be stepped on, because I think the person would lose their foot even if you were the size of Groot.

[oakay]

[THAT ASSHOLE ISN'T GOING TO MAKE ME EAT SOAP! YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO.]

[He's working on the language but... look, he has been raised by bad influences here. He is from a broken home, he has no idea who his real dad is and instead, he has two assholes for dads. Who tell him one thing and then forget later. If you don't like him swearing, stop swearing around him!

Groot looks at Peter, cocks his head to the side and asks a question that could very well get his disowned from being Peter's wristwatch:] I am Groot? [Thriller?]

Ah. Generally angry and destroying the foliage in lieu of a more productive target. Got it. Well I can't blame you. This place sucks.

Look, man, you just have to do the opposite of what we do. Don't say asshole, it's a bad word. [ there's a pause as he frowns. ] But then if you do the opposite of what we do, does that mean you're going to go left when we go right? [ peter squints, tilting his head to the side in thought. ] You know what? Don't do that. That was a bad suggestion.

[ being a role model is hard work, you know? he has to watch what he says and he has to make sure his pr is on point all the time. sometimes he asks himself what yondu would do with groot, and then he realises he'd probably sell him. the only person he can depend on to give him parental guidance is mom, and he's not so sure what she'd do if she saw a talking tree. (he does; she'd love the fuck out of little groot, make sure he eats all his vegetables, goes to bed at a reasonable hour, reads books and listens to all the music she loves.) ]

[ looking down at groot, he smiles. ] I'll show you "Thriller". I'll even get you a little jacket so you can be a tree-MJ. You're going to love it! It's one of the best dances of all time, and you'd actually make a cool looking zombie. I think you've got the rhythm for it. Not many people can pull of Michael Jackson, but I've got faith in you, Groot.

Now you're getting it. If a place is good enough to keep me trapped for this long, then it's got something I've never seen before workin' it, but I'm still lookin'.

[That's the most honest thing he could say without making her spiral down into despair. He still misses Togami and Teruteru and Mahiru and Peko and...]

Sometimes he hangs out in the maze making bomb obstacle courses for himself, so if he's not here, that's my best bet. Especially if he's not picking up his phone.

[ it's better for both of them if he doesn't force the question, if he doesn't try too hard to figure out why she remains just a little on edge, uneasy and tense. he won't be able to change any of it, so there's no use making him carry that weight already. if they ever get him back, if she ever sees this rip again in the regular timeline, he'll have to deal with it one way or another. maybe he'll be able to accept that it wasn't his fault.

but his explanation does offer a distraction, and soon enough they're at the bar. sara scans the rows of bottles behind it for a moment, but turns to rip quickly enough when he says that. ] In that case, lay it on me.

I know this is hard. I know it's not what you want to hear. But there are good things about Wonderland! [ She pauses, letting the anticipation draw out. Anticipation makes everything better. ]

[ a tall, densely-muscled woman sits by the exit, dressed in sleek monochrome. as people leave, they find her hand is open, extended in a greeting she learned in a time of war. one that's proven to be more powerful than the swing of a sword, no matter the time or place. ]

Good morning. Will you talk with me for a few moments? I promise I won't keep you long. [ she smiles around those broad vowels that speak of a woman who learned english after her native language. her shoulders sit back in what looks like an easy confidence, as if she's not worried about her sudden kidnapping. all of her attention is on who she's speaking with in this moment. ] My name is Diana, I'm new to this place.

[ she pushes the seat across from her out with a toe, and gestures toward the seat. ]

( Sara notices two things about the woman before she even speaks -- she's not been here long and she's confident. Not just confident but easily prepared. Her hand shows signs of previous fight, and if the woman, Diana, were smart she'd be sizing Sara up right now.

And Sara expects that she is smart.

She slips into the offered chair with ease, holding her gaze and leaning forward into the table. There's something about this woman that interests her, and it's not what she's already figured out )

Sara. I don't know how much I can help, I don't really know a lot about this place, but I can tell you what I was told when I got here.
