[ athens? doc's hands still, coming to rest on her shoulders. he hasn't spoken greek in years, not since his schooling, but he can recall enough to utter: ]

Why'd you have to leave?

Everyone knew about me in Purgatory. They knew everything I had ever done and they wouldn't ever let me live it down. Worse, it was dragging Waverly down with me, I left for her sake as much as my own.

[wynonna is the textbook example of tell someone they're bad or crazy enough and they start living up to it. the people in purgatory never gave her the chance to do anything else. even her own aunt had seen her as too broken to save.]

Almost like someone had written a book about you or had Valor Kiln [ that's val kilmer, doc, but carry on ] play you in some picture. We've all got our stories, darlin'. Our demons, those things we wish everyone would just forget. Doesn't do you a lick of good to run, especially when you're more valuable here than away. ...or in Purgatory, rather, bein' that we're here and not there.

Val Kilmer. [there's a beat and then.] the difference is most people don't know you're Doc Holliday, you're just a legend to them. I'm real. I don't get to pretend to be anyone else, I didn't back then. I couldn't stand the constant stares and whispers, the people who never expected anything out of me but to be the crazy chick who killed her father.

[it had been too heavy. she never wanted to come back to Purgatory but home called her back the way it always does with Earps.]

I'm not running anymore. It's different now. I have Waverly. And you. And -- [She wants to say Dolls but they don't even know where he is. She tries to push on.]

I have people I want to fight for, now.

Legends aren't necessarily true. [ he frequently argued with shorty's patrons over that very thing, whether they be mythical "truths" about himself or wyatt and his brothers. things people assumed, things history let them assume. things that often far from the actual truth. ] Nor are the horrible things they say about you.

[ doc takes hold of her chin, forcing her gaze up. ] You've done things, yes, but those things were all part of this mess you and you're family's in. It's not pretty and it ain't gonna get any prettier any time soon, but it's your history and they don't have the luxury of living through it as you do. You've saved their asses how many times now? They may not know it, but you are the best thing to happen to Purgatory in a long, long time.

One day they'll see. One day they'll see all the things I d— All the things we do.

[middlefinger]

[A bright, playful smile tugs at her lips at his little slip. Like she would ever let him live that down.]

What was that, Doc? I didn't quite catch it.

[wildwest]

[ he huffs at her, letting his hand fall away, though his other remains on her shoulder. ]

You are insufferable. [ that's not what you almost said, doc. ]

[middlefinger]

You know you love it. [and who wouldn't, with this kind of charm? it feels nice to be able to talk to him and joke around with him like this -- while she understands his reasons for being distant she had missed him.]

that is a lot of feelings. and wynonna isn't great at those. nor does she know what to say and it makes her feel a little breathless and flustered and --

oh what the hell.

she kisses him.]

[ unlike the last time she tried to kiss him, doc doesn't dodge the attempt. he doesn't push her away, doesn't say deliberately cruel things designed to drive her away. no, he pulls her in closer, kissing her soundly, for there's no reason he shouldn't — no reason worth heeding, anyway. ]

[oh good. he doesn't push her away this time. the second she tried to close the gap between them she was afraid he might. but things feel different now, and while she still has a lot of unhappiness to work through this isn't quite the desperate act it was back then.

this isn't about anything other than her and him and the way he makes her toes curl in her shoes as she presses closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck.]

[ were it not for the fact that they were in some random storeroom adjacent to the bar, doc would've let this continue. but the last thing they needed was some poor, unsuspecting fool waltzing in here in search of supplies, only to find them. so when air becomes a necessity, doc breaks the kiss. ]

I do not believe this is the place for us to be doing this.

That didn't stop us the first time.

[she's just saying. the first time they did it in the woods and didn't give a fuck --

but they're in a new place and she supposes it might not make the best first impression

you know, if you care about that sort of thing.

she relents and pulls back a little with a playful pout.]

Darlin', I am a respectable gentleman and I will not have us known as that couple caught fornicating in a storeroom on their first day.

[ honestly, woman. just because he bed you in a largely uninhabited wooded area doesn't mean he's up to frolicking in public. they have a black badge reputation to uphold and not soil that quickly. give it time. try to be something of a responsible adult for a little while, at least. ]

Well you're no fun.

[wynonna has probably frolicked in public before at some point in her life.

but sure, she'll try to pretend to be a real adult for five minutes. maybe even ten. even though it's really hard when he calls her darlin' like that. it does something to her, okay?

also she's going to ignore the word couple because she doesn't have it in her to have a define the relationship talk right now.]

We should probably work on finding rooms of our own then.

Oh, I think we both know I am plenty of fun. [ hinthintwinkwink.

doc holds the door open for her, swooping down to retrieve his hat once he's past the threshold. he dusts off the brim and places it back on his head. ]

Floor preference? [ he doesn't care. pick a floor, any floor. ]

Maybe you'll need to remind me.

[wynonna shrugs her shoulders a little. she doesn't know that much about this place just yet.]

Maybe this floor? Four seems as good as anywhere.

[yes, she wants to stay near the bar, it may be no shorty's but it'll have to do.]

Maybe I will.

[ later, though. time to go room exploring. ]

We should probably select rooms with window views. Much easier to shoot through glass than walls.

And we'll probably need to do that sooner or later. Do we want them right next to one another, or across the hall...? [She doesn't want to crowd him too much or anything but at the same time he's right, keeping close to one another is a smart strategic plan.

She just wants him nearby.]

I'd say next to each other so we both have window access.

Hard to argue with that logic.

plus she can make sure he's not bringing in anyone else to his room. though defining the relationship could also ensure that, wynonna.]
