"Well that's just mean. I make perfectly good coffee." It's easy to fall into banter and he had missed her too, so much. As much as this place sucks having her here was good, he wasn't even sorry that he was glad she had showed up.

"Just alright? I'll have you know I came up with a lot of the drinks on the secret menu." He spent entirely too much time in the coffee shop with Darcy. Entirely too much.

"I'm pretty sure Wolverine would drink motor oil if it was caffeinated." He's not saying that wolverine doesn't have high standards but...

"Hey. Maybe I like mine motor oil, too."

Kate's smile doesn't dampen. A bite of antagonism aside, she's not worried about hurting his feelings -- secret menu or no secret menu. She is unabashed in her verdict, but expects it not to dig too deep under his skin. Maybe, had he been a stranger, she might have felt bad for the slight against the coffee shop.

But he's Billy. He knows she adores him.

"You do not. Or you wouldn't be waiting for a French press to brew." He smirks at her because he knows. He never takes her words to heart, the effect of having been friends for years. He adores her just as much.

"If I conjure us up some breakfast are you going to turn your nose up at that to? Are you going to make me cook?" Probably not a good idea. Magic food is better than food on fire.

Kate spares a glance for the press. It's gonna be ready any moment now -- but somehow, as she squares back up to Billy, he seems like the better priority. More vital than coffee, even, in this moment.

"I wouldn't say no to pancakes," she demures. "With real maple syrup. I wanna taste Vermont in every bite, buddy."

He snorts a laugh and nods. "Vermont in every bite coming right up." It's a good thing he's had three years of uninterrupted practice, the Billy he was back home probably wouldn't have been as good at this, the maple syrup probably would have ended up being Aunt Jemima.

A familiar flash of blue goes off and then there is a feast of pancakes on the counter. Any kind she could ever want and of course pure Vermont maple syrup.

[ -- holy shit.

kate breaks into laughter while she pours her coffee from french press to mug. she leaves it black. ]

Are you sure you're not overcompensating just a little 'cause of the coffee shop dig?

Maybe. [ He shrugs sheepishly. ] You gotta like something I make you or I'm going to get a complex, Kate.

Besides, Teddy will finish whatever we don't eat.

[ a complex! she has to laugh again. but not before helping herself to a plate of pancakes -- thick, fluffy, and smeared in syrup. she doesn't bother with a knife but saws a bite off with the edge of her fork. ]

Where is Teddy on this fine syrupy morning?

[ well. freshly syrupy. ]

[ Billy takes his own plate- blueberry, and pours a liberal amount of syrup over them. He shrugs as he takes a bite. ]

Could be still sleeping? Could be somewhere else. [ Billy doesn't know because Teddy's room is on the first floor, Billy's is on the seventh and things are still...weird. He's giving Teddy space. ]

[ excellent -- a board to jump off of. kate hides a glimmer of curiousity behind a coffe sip. ]

Okay. [ a beat before the inevitable: ] How's things?

[ you know. billy and teddy things. ]

[ he's expecting it when she asks, because of course she asks. It's Kate and it's them and she's his best friend.

He shrugs and takes another bite before answering, mulling it over in his head. ]

Not bad...not necessarily good either. I'm trying to respect his space. [ And get over a mountain of issues he has himself. ] we're...working things out, I think.

[ kate tips her mug again. she aches for the both of them -- 'cause as far as she's concerned, billy and teddy are one of those couples that just ought to be together.

not that she'll push it. like billy says, space should be respected. ]

I guess there are worse places to be than that. Have the two of you talked much? Maybe tried for a nice light lunch date?

I guess you're right. We could be not speaking and festering in anger. [ Like he was when Teddy first showed up. ]

He's still at the "I think you might have fabricated my feelings using your powers" stage of things.

[ He shrugs, because pushing away his feelings is an art he's perfected in three years. ]

We went on a date, then zombies attacked like a week later so it's been distracting. We aren't avoiding each other but we aren't...us.

[ Of anyone here Kate would get that. Kate knows them back home, she understands. ]

[ kate does her best not to spoil things in the years that follow for both the guys. but some truths slip through, like her dismay that they should be in such a rocky place to begin with. clearly, that doesn't sit well with her. not well at all.

[ Billy knows what it's like to be ahead in time, to know things that other people shouldn't know yet. He doesn't press her for details. He would rather not know what's going to happen since there isn't anything he can do about it. ]

That sounds like an idea we could both go for. Keep the pressure off.

[ she polishes off a plate of pancakes -- at some point transitioning to sit on the counter instead, mug close at hand. ]

Do you want me to float it by him? Be the neutral third party, so to speak?

[ or billy could bring the option to teddy's attention himself. she isn't fussed. mostly, it's a mild suggestion. a bit of busy-body meddling. ]

[ He could use some busy-body meddling. That's probably what got him into this situation- the lack of Kate Bishop meddling. ]

Sure. Gage his reaction, I doubt he'd be opposed to it, but I feel like I don't know anymore.

[ He does know, he's just doubting his Teddy instincts. ]

[ -- kate sets aside her mug and hops off the counter, finding her feat with ease. grace, almost. she's quick to put a hand on billy's shoulder. and when she does, she offers a bolstering squeeze. ]

You're overthinking it. [ she's convinced. ] But I'm happy to do it all the same.
