[ -- show off. but, then again, she can't begrudge anyone for refusing to hide their light under a bushel. especially when kate also watches his stance with an open curiousity. she's utterly in the dark about who he is -- who he might be -- so for the time being he's simply novel.

doesn't mean he doesn't remind her of someone, though. ]

You did? [ a flicker of chagrin. ] It's open to the public, right? I hope I'm not...trespassing on your turf or anything like that.

[ because she's real tempted to match him shot for shot but she also knows better than to spit on courtesy. ]

So I've been told. Apparently I've been here before. [ He doesn't remember but they say that's normal. ] Yeah, go ahead, shoot away. I don't usually get people who appciate a good bow. [ It's all guns now, but there is a finesse and an elegance in what they do. ]

[ He steps up next to her properly. ] You up for some friendly competition?

[ been here before. well, that gets filed away. she might be out here killing time and spending arrows but she's a private investigator now; her mind's gotta be always open for clues. leads. points of interest. and maybe this is one of them.

she slides an arrow from the quiver on her hip. it's fletched in purple. ]

How friendly are we talking? [ her chin lifts. ] Not that we've got much worth wagering thanks to the closets.

[bowsniper]

[ He makes note of the purple arrow, good taste there, among other things as he studies her.

He grins, notching his own arrow on his bow strings. ]

Loser has to go fetch all the arrows we shoot?

A modest gamble, maybe, but I can respect it. [ better than the time she gambled all her gear (clint's gear) against him. the comparison scratches an itch, but doesn't drop a penny.

she nocks her arrow and makes the shot that she'd learned from clint on that same night, the night she'd competed just to keep his bow: the robin hood shot. this time, she doesn't fire three at once but three in succession, splintering all three of his earlier shots.

it's a trick she'd once claimed was impossible -- right up until hawkeye proved her wrong. ]

[bowsniper]

[ He lets out a whistle. She's good, which is good because he likes a little competition. ] Not many people can do that. [ and by that he means no one but him- that he knows of and he's made it a point to know of talented archers back home.

He thinks for a moment before nocking three arrows again and shooting them at the targets that are moving. They all hit their marks. ]

Just two that I can think of. Maybe a few others, but they're flukes. Mostly.

[ nah, she and clint are just about the finest marksmen the world has ever seen. she reckons. at least by her world's measure -- and on any given day it's hard to tell which one might be better of the two. it might depend on who had the better breakfast. who got the better night's sleep.

dumb luck, though kate didn't like believing in luck.

this time she doesn't go for the robin hood shot. this time, she nocks three and merely copies his trick. thud, thud, thud. ]

[bowsniper]

Hard shot to make for a fluke.

[ But maybe not unheard of. She's not making this easy for him, but that's ok, he likes the challenge. ] You're good, kid. Can't say I know anyone back home that shoots this well.

[ He's shooting while he's talking, glancing down the range before looking back at her, he lets the arrows fly directly at hers splitting all three down the middle. ]

Kate. [ she chafes at being called 'kid,' it seems. ] Bishop.

And I should hope not. What kinda Hawkeye would I be if I wasn't the best?

[ she's almost smug when she says it; bright-eyed, delighted. ]

[ Steve had mentioned the whole alternate universe thing but that doesn't prepare him for Kate calling herself Hawkeye. Is he a girl in another world? ]

You wouldn't be Hawkeye if you weren't the best. I can attest to that. Clint Barton. [ He's wondering if she'll recognize the name or maybe he doesn't exist in her world. Or she's him...yeah not going with that line of thinking. Not yet. ]

[ there's a glimmer of something good that steals across her expression when it seems he recognizes the name. it's true -- she wouldn't be hawkeye (one of two) if she wasn't the best (one of two).

but she's not quite prepared for what comes next. kate's grip shifts on her bow. her arms lower -- the competition briefly 'forgotten.'

Clint? [ a twinge of uncertainty while her head shakes. kate's no rookie; she knows what it means to meet someone with a name you know but a face you don't. ] Should've known. Jeez. With shooting like that...
