undyne ( undertale )
[Undyne hasn't cooked in a long, long time.
She hasn't had the nerve to. Not since the last time she cooked something was...
Well, it lost her her house, and it gave her a friend that turned out to be the scum of the earth. Papyrus has urged her to try to reinstate her cooking lessons with him, but she's gotten about as far as opening a packet of noodles, giving up on getting them out, tossing the package in room temperature water, and going to watch TV with Sans instead.
But, hell. There's a kitchen here. And it's got everything a monster could ever dream of.
Undyne takes one of the tomatoes she's dug out of the fridge and considers it for a moment, before crushing it in her fist, with a spurt of red juice scattering every which way. She grins a toothy, toothy grin.
She throws the tomato into a pot and starts stabbing it hastily with a wooden spoon. Soon enough, the other pot she has on the stove is boiling over, and it looks like disaster might strike soon.
Undyne being the disaster.]
MUSIC ROOM
[Undyne missed her piano more than a lot of other things.
There were some things she missed more. People, really. But her piano's loss left her with no outlet. She plays when she feels unsure, when she feels restless, when she feels weak. She's felt all of these things and more for a long time now, with no keys to press, no tune to hum, no song to sing.
So when she finds the music room, it's like letting out a breath she's been holding for months.
She admires the piano, at first, lifting the cover and running her fingers along the keys, letting the crescendo of notes that are produced pull her back into the feeling. She grips her hand into a fist and brings it down hard on the keys, letting out a dissonant tone.
Yeah, that sounds about right. This place probably never lets it go out of tune with magic or whatever, anyway.
So she finally sits at the bench, and she begins to play, simple notes, but making it easier to sing concurrently. Her voice isn't perfect, a little pitchy in places, and she tends to outright yell rather than hit high notes, but it's clearly coming from a place of honesty. It's not hard to listen to at all.
She doesn't even notice anyone wander in. She's left the door open, after all.]
TRUE LAB/TINY RICK EVENT
[Little Undyne has been little for a little too long.
She's starting to forget that she's ever been an adult. It's coming in lapses, now, but she's starting to feel more young than old, and her tearing through the halls of the spooky laboratory can be heard from rooms away. She pit-pat-pit-pats her little sneakers as she climbs onto one of the beds, and starts jumping energetically from mattress to mattress.
One bed she's jumped onto starts to shake as she's on it, more and more violently as she jumps. Finally, she falls back onto it.]
Whoa!
[Goop emerges from below the sheets, spilling out onto the tile, vibrating her whole body as she wriggles wildly.]
WHAT IS IT!! I'LL KILL YOU!! DON'T SCARE ME, IDIOT!!!
[Finally, the goop has subsided, now entirely on the ground, and it reforms into a very, very droopy, very tall shape, like some kind of long, featureless monster with one limb. It shambles at her, and she yelps, wrapping herself up in the sheets in panic.]
Wait, what the hell... I ain't scared of you, punk!!
[She growls at the Amalgamate, remembering herself for a moment, but it doesn't seem very impressed. She's very small.]
TINY UNDYNE YO!!!!!
[There's really only one thing she could be yelling at, too. Frisk skids to a halt, slips on a smear of dribbling white, and ends up flat on their back and out of breath.]
[They can only manage one wheezy, desperate protest, one hand upraised.] S-stop...
HELL YEAH
The human...
[She bares her teeth, ready to start rushing them -- but suddenly, she forgets herself again, and she turns her vengeful expression to the Amalgamate once more, and stretches out a fist.
With the fluid motion of her arm, light blue magic spears shoot out towards the creature. They're tiny, and most fizzle right before reaching their target, but one hits. That one simply seems to be absorbed into the gooey flesh of the thing.]
WHAT!!! Don't eat my magic! It's not for eating!
[She rounds on Frisk once more, though now her expression is significantly less vengeful.]
What are you doing, beat it up! You're a human, you have death beams!!
[Little Undyne's imagination of how humans are supposed to be has made a lot of assumptions.]
no subject
It's okay. It doesn't want to hurt us.
[It's scared. And it lashes out when it's scared. Most things do.]
Just...don't attack. Please.
no subject
She's remembering, in spurts. Remembering becoming friends with them. Remembering burning down her house together by having too much fun.
Remembering how they must have killed Asgore. Remembering how she never saw Alphys again after they ran into her. Remembering what her life was like after they happened to it.
She grits her teeth.]
How do you know what it wants!?
[True to their word, though, the strange monster of goo just sort of undulates in place. She looks between it and them.]
You better be right! And don't think you're off the hook!!! Once I'm big again, I'm gonna do what I should've done a long time ago!!
[With how hard they are to hit, there's no way her much weaker magic can take them on while she's in this child body.]
no subject
[Even if it's Undyne, even if she might find out anyway - it's not their secret to tell. It's not their past to spill. They're a human; they know things that people maybe wouldn't expect them to know. And they can make that claim to someone small enough to believe it, divorced enough from the context of the Surface to accept it.]
[Reaper Bird sputters, like its caught in the static of a looping tape. Frisk kneels and prays for safety.]
[* , remembers its conscience.]
no subject
It's not very convincing reasoning, but coupled with their ability to make the weird monster calm down, Undyne is convinced after all. She's less convinced, though, of their innocence. Despite their ability to placate even the strangest, scariest monsters, they still killed Asgore and Mettaton.
They still took Alphys away.
She pouts, looking away, letting them do their thing.]
Why is it all f-- messed up, anyway? I've never seen a monster like that!
no subject
[But they can't keep giving her non-answers. If she wasn't suspicious before, she certainly has to be now.]
It's a lot of little monsters. All rolled together. They just...have to remember who they are.
[That makes sense, right? Absolutely. Yes.]
no subject
How'd they get like that...?
[Somehow, knowing they were just regular monsters... That's even scarier. Could this happen to her? She's never heard of anything like this, no weird... joining of monsters that can't remember themselves. This struggle between multiple wills and bodies and memories.
Is she going to turn into that someday?
Undyne doesn't want to be here anymore. She's shaken to her core, overwhelmed by all of this. Being a child again, being in this creepy place, running into something... someone terrifying like that.
But those monsters...]
That's it! We have to save them!!! We have to... uhh...
[Her thoughts drift to Alphys instantly. Alphys would be the one who would know what to do.
But Alphys is gone. Undyne clenches her fist, gritting her teeth. She rounds back on the human.]
DO SOMETHING!!!
no subject
I am.
[Apparently placated, the Reaper Bird begins to dissolve into nothingness. A soft sigh issues from between parted lips, and the human sits back on their heels.]
It's okay now. See?
no subject
...It's okay now.
[She repeats the words dully, as she continues to stare after its remains, an empty void where too many once were, an imagined stain on the tile that it left.
They're never going to be whole and apart again, are they? They're simply drifted away, to be peaceful despite their shared consciousness. Remembering who they were without being who they were.
Undyne's fist comes down on the mattress, gripping the sheets that have tangled around her legs. She pulls them out of the loose knot, extracting them from herself, leaving the bed a mess as she drops her little sneakers down to the ground.]
Am I going to be stuck like this forever too??
[As a child, constantly forgetting who she was. The same as the Amalgamate.
Only... no. She's still Undyne. Just different Undynes, different versions of herself.]
no subject
[Which would explain how unnerved she is, at the idea of facing a human.]
[A deep breath. They shake their head.]
No. It's an event. It'll...things'll go back to normal eventually.
no subject
She hasn't felt the high of determination in months. Instead, where determination once was, it's nothing but static. Echoing voices of Asgore and Alphys, long gone. Not even able to find hope in the continued lives of her final, remaining friends.
Because they're never leaving the Underground now.]
Nothing's ever going back to normal, [she argues pettily.] Not since you happened to me!! Do you even know what you DID!?
[Obviously they know they killed Asgore, but the disappearance of the remaining six souls, and of Alphys... Do they even know?]
no subject
[Breathe.]
[Face your consequences.]
I hurt people.
no subject
You did worse than THAT!!! NGAAAAHHH!!
[She jumps towards them, fully intending on just wrestling them to the ground. She doesn't exactly have a plan. Though she's long given up on thoughts of revenge, her childlike energy keeps coming back in waves, and that's enough to spur her to action. To do something. She might be slightly younger than them, and in a constant loop of forgetting how to fight with any finesse, just charging head on, but she wants them to at least know.
She's probably never going to get closure. She failed to protect her friends, plain and simple. And if the human can take on Asgore, they can certainly take on a scrawny child version of Undyne, a version of Undyne that couldn't lay a single hand on the King. But she's still just so angry.]

Kitchen! Also, AAAAAAAAAAAA
He pretty much slides into the kitchen with style.]
UNDYNE!!!! YOU'RE STARTING A TRAINING SESSION WITHOUT ME?!?!?!
AAAAAAA
Sorry, Papyrus! I just wanted to get back into it!!!
[She gives the tomato paste a vigorous stirring, whirling the spoon around in the pot like a sauce cyclone.]
NGAAAAAH!!!
[When she's done, she plops the pot back in its place on the stove, and thumbs toward the packaged pasta she already fished out of the magic pantry.]
You can join in anytime!!
AAAAAA AA AAAAAA
[He runs the two feet to the counter to survey the situation. The tomatoes are nicely punched into a paste and the water is seeping over the pot and onto the stove.
Waaaaait a minute...
The water needs salt, right??
He throws open a cabinet door and grabs a salt shaker. He violently shakes the salt shaker into the pot. There is salt everywhere.]
NYEH HEH!!! IT'S BEEN TOO LONG SINCE WE'VE LAST HAD A COOKING SESSION TOGETHER, WE NEED TO MAKE THIS SPAGHETTI EXTRA AMAZING TO MAKE UP FOR IT!!!
Aa
[The fact she's seen the sun for the first time in her life has really reinvigorated her. Even if she's yet to learn what this place really has in store for her, and she still doesn't know that her dead friends still live, there's something about feeling the sun on her scales that made everything feel so much more possible.
Almost like she can force herself to move on, if she has to. But she's not so sure about all that. At the very least, she can try her hand at cooking again.
The sauce is simmering, and Papyrus is taking care of the noodles. Undyne steps back to survey their progress, smiling fondly. She sort of wants to apologize for how distant she's been for so long, but she's sure he gets it. He's Papyrus. He understands more than he may let on.]
Make sure you really show those noodles what you got!!
no subject
[It kinda sounds Italian, which makes it also sound even more delicious!]
ALREADY ON IT, UNDYNE!!! NYEH HEH HEH!!!!
[And indeed, he already has gotten started with the pasta. By which I mean he's successfully slam dunked all of the spaghetti strands everywhere, but at least most of it landed into the pot. Now he's stirring the pot as fast as he can with a wooden spoon, water spilling out everywhere!!]
WOWIE, MAKING SPAGHETTI ONLY FOR A COUPLE OF PEOPLE SURE IS A LOT EASIER THAN MAKING IT IN BULK!!! I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW LONG IT TAKES TO MAKE SPAGHETTI FOR THE ENTIRE KINGDOM...
no subject
[Hang on.]
Papyrus, why are you making spaghetti for THAT many people?? You didn't end up actually becoming a celebrity chef like you said, have you?!
[Because without the Royal Guard to aspire to, Papyrus' goals have been kind of all over the place. He's got a new dream practically daily. She never expected one of them to actually come true.]
Kitchen!
Asriel's eyes widen as soon as he pokes his head into the kitchen, drawn to the loud sounds coming from it. First Papyrus, and now her?
Admittedly, he hasn't actually seen her since he was a baby. And uhh... all the times he attempted to murder her as a flower.
What should he say? She doesn't seem like she sees him yet, he could turn around and walk away. He thinks maybe he should, until he sees the pot on the stove bubbling and hissing. Is - is that going to explode?]
Uh - uhm, I think your pot is overflowing...
no subject
That couldn't possibly be Asgore's kid. He just happens to look a ton like Asgore for some other, completely coincidental reason.]
Ah, sh-- Crap!
[She quickly turns that burner down and takes the pot to pour some of the excess water in the sink. She places it back on the burner and waves the lid over the top of it like that's supposed to help at all. It does die down, though, in the end, and the pot boils over no more.]
Thanks, kid... Uh, sorry, you just look sorta like someone I knew.
[Referring to Asgore, of course, because it's not like she ever really knew his kids.
And Asgore is gone, now.
She doesn't want to get into a conversation over that, so she quickly changes the subject, rounding on him with a forced grin.]
You wanna learn how to cook??
MUSIC ROOM
Not the leitmotif tied to her beloved Alphys, this time, but something else. They found her in a piano room the first time Undyne graced Wonderland, too. It seems only fitting this is how they find her a second time.
They prepare themselves, lingering outside the door for a moment. Real Knife ready, close at hand. Strategy ready. It's been a long time since they faced the familiar patterns of her attacks, so they're bound to be rusty. The Locket's armor should be enough to make sure they don't die, since there's not much chance she'll go Undying on them here and now, but... it'll be a tough fight.
Because it'll be a fight. Of course it will. A true hero can recognize evil, no matter how hard it tries to disguise itself. She'll sense that rot within them again, they're sure of it. Their jokes won't be funny. Nobody will be wishing they'd laughed it off like Chara did. They'll be ready, though, and they'll be LV8 this time, so they'll have HP to spare.
They take in a deep breath, and invite themselves into the music room.]
Golly! Been a while since I heard anyone playing that old thing.
no subject
She can't help the instant drumming of her SOUL from within her chest at seeing a human. She doesn't recognize them, but the last time she got cozy with a human...
Well, she regretted it for the rest of her life.
But they seem to not be coming in for an attack of any kind. They're just smiling and commenting on her playing. Besides... she's lost the will to fight a long time ago. She glances between them and the keys.]
Yeah, I just... I haven't played in a while.
[A long while. She's a little out of practice. But a lot of it's just muscle memory.]
I guess I just missed it!!
[She forces a big grin at them, though her heart's not in it, and that might or might not be obvious to them.]
