Breaks your heart, doesn't it.

[ it's dry, it lacks interest. tony has never had the chance to make any sort of peace with his father before his passing. a video of howard stark claiming he's proud of him doesn't make up for twenty one years of absence and a cold shoulder. without the ability to asked him questions that mattered, to lash and to heal, the wound festered, becoming something ugly and painful.

he's not letting her rub salt into it, if only because she's a wound in her own right, not one made from anger and resentment but one made from early childhood days and grief that he hasn't even had time to process.

now's not the time. ]

I'm not Howard.

[ he says, as a end of discussion sort of claim. he doesn't even call him my father. ]

Evidently not.

[ and she doesn't care. not really. howard is alive and bright-eyed and as annoying as ever. back home. back in '47. back in peru, where he's off dropping everything just to pursue a lead to help her in her rogue move against the ssr establishment. ]

And yet you're still a human being, I presume. So I can only imagine you at least have an inkling of what it means to be bloody decent when someone offers you a hand in this or any endeavour. But perhaps I imagined wrong.

[ steve had warned her. ego, presence, bravado. but he'd said the man had a good heart underneath it all. where is that heart now? ]

[ there's a tone of disappointment there, or at least tony hears one because he's so used to it. he's not his father, only he doesn't really see it as a point to care about, not anymore. hell, most days tony's rather proud of it.

he's hardly his old man. that's no bad thing, surely. he's not after pep talk, he's not after someone seeing his humanity. at least, not with her. he doesn't need this with her.

the person who tony built a digital compact mirror for is long dead. he's not pursuing new memories here. ]

You probably did and it's a bullshit lie, by the way.

[ he reads between the lines, he infers what she wouldn't tell him. she doesn't just assume he can be decent. rogers told her and that makes tony resent him all the more. ]
mucked: (☂ if that watch don't continue to swing)

[personal profile] mucked 2017-09-30 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ things get recursive. she reads between the lines between which he's already reading. tony might be stuck feeling ruffled and chafed by comparisons, but peggy can't quite stow away that funny little thrill at finding out he's clever. quick-thinking and quick-decoding and tony's realized exactly who'd set her up to think well of him.

neither of them want to discuss steve and yet steve seems stuck at the crossroads of this discussion. ]

-- He always was a godawful liar. [ so let tony be 'right,' then. let him paint himself terrible and unfriendly and incapable of accepting help when it's offered. ] So why don't you set the record straight.

Who are you, Tony Stark?

You're not doing that well yourself.

[ lying to him, that is. but then, he's not doing an excellent job lying to her, either. he doesn't seem angry as much as he seems tired, though of what, it's not clear. he hasn't been here for a long time and already it seems like he's restless, aching to fight something or invent something or try something. ]

F.R.I.D.A.Y.

[ he pushes the phone in her direction. there is no internet access here ( naturally ) but F.R.I.D.A.Y pulls what he does have, covers of Time Magazine, man of the year, a graduation diploma from M.I.T when he was seventeen, some Iron Man videos. ]
mucked: (☂ if heaven and hell decide)

[personal profile] mucked 2017-09-30 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the phone rates barely a glance. magazine covers and documents. and she's convinced that all of them are fascinating but none of it compares to humint. and the best source for her humint is standing right there, fobbing her off on a bloody mobile phone. ]

In your own words, rather.

[ she nudges the device aside. ]
