Chidi Anagonye | The Good Place

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Dining Room

So... I can have... any food I want?

[The table spreads itself out in front of him, covered with every favorite food he's ever had. Chidi starts to reach for one of the plates, then draws his hand back. He reaches for the next one. Draws his hand back again.]

Oh.... I'm getting a stomachache. I mean, do we even know where they're getting this food? What are the ethical ramifications of eating magical food that comes from an unknown source? How do we know what it even is?

Library

[Chidi has finally found the upside to Wonderland. The library.]

This place... it's beautiful! [He's found several of his old favorites already, and now he's going around for round two: books he's never heard of by philosophers he has heard of. Books from alternate universes where great minds had come up with different ideas.

Pretty soon, he's surrounded by a growing book fort, happily reading and jotting down notes as he does it. He's in nerd heaven.]

[ Claire, in her tartan and corset, hair up, is putting together plates for her and Jamie when she hears the wonderings of someone who must be new. With a friendly smile, she glances up at him. ]

Not to cause your stomach more unrest, but what would the alternative be to eating the food provided when literally everything is provided?

[ It's a genuine question, not at all filled with any kind of sarcasm as she observes. ]

I take it you're relatively new, as well?

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-26 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an interesting question, actually. If the only food available is from a questionable source, is it ethically permissible to eat it when the other choice is death? Or is taking a principled stand and refusing to cause an unknown amount of harm to the world the way to go? It's possible ignorance safeguards us, but if we are aware of the potential issues, it is imperative that we seek answers and--

[He clears his throat.]

Yes, I am new.

[ Well, this has the potential to be a spirited conversation, and Claire actually sits as she thinks about his quandary before he cut himself off. ]

I wonder how that might change when you know that each time we die here - and we do but come back from the dead up to five times - it actually fuels our prison. It literally runs on our memories and our deaths.

[ Extending her hand, she gives him a bit of a sympathetic smile. ]

Claire Fraser.

Chidi Anagonye. [He shakes her hand.] I'm a professor of ethics.

[Which.... probably explains a whole lot about him.]

Ah, well, first of all, it's a pleasure to meet you. Second, I don't believe anyone's thought deeply about the ethics of Wonderland. We've all been magically kidnapped and periodically the mansion itself attempts to kill us.

[ So like, there's just no time. ]

Could we assume that our benefactor is also our prison ward and is somehow keeping us well supplied because he or she (or it) needs us?
filibusteredrecess: (wjh065)

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's any argument that whatever entity is behind Wonderland isn't very ethical. Kidnapping and attempted murder are pretty clear nos, ethically speaking.

It's hard to assume anything when we know so little about the place. But yes, I think it's very likely whoever trapped us here is also responsible for feeding us. Though if it is to preserve us for a future need, that raises another question: considering Wonderland's aforementioned kidnapping and murder stance, it's likely whatever that need is, it will not be for good. Should we not figure out that purpose before we make a decision on how to proceed?

Part of the problem is not being able to get to information so easily. Everything is highly cryptic and in six years, which is the longest someone's been here, there have been no new answers. Though I know it isn't for lack of trying.

[ That's the highly frustrating problem with Wonderland. They're here for what? There's a vague sense of knowing a few details, but nothing concrete. ]

So, in the meantime, we have to eat and drink and supply ourselves against danger, using the things given to us from questionable sources. While still attempting to gain answers about our purpose here.

Library

[personal profile] bibliocorn 2017-11-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It really is!

[Hey, Chidi, there's a little unicorn hanging around, reading through a pile of books, levitating a couple around himself as he keeps trying to cross-reference various texts he's found. He's so happy. This is the BEST place.]

If we had a place like this back home, I don't think I'd ever step hoof outside of it ever again.
filibusteredrecess: (wjh171)

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You're... a talking horse.

[Chidi looks down at his book, then back up at unicorn and nope, still there.]

...I don't think I've been up over 24 hours yet. I shouldn't be hallucinating.
bibliocorn: (Do not speak as loud as my heart)

[personal profile] bibliocorn 2017-11-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Pony, technically. Unicorn, if you want to be more exact.

[He pushes his glasses back up his muzzle with a hoof and a slightly haughty sniff.]

I promise I'm not a hallucination. I've got nowhere near that sort of magical skill. I'm as real as you are. It's a simple case of other universes, after all, the tiniest of act can create a completely different one. Stands to reason that some worlds have talking equines, while others have [oh balls, what did Twilight say they were called again? ] hoomans.

[Nailed it. ]
filibusteredrecess: (wjh144)

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-28 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I... am pretty sure I don't want to know what tiny act could create a world of talking horses.
bibliocorn: (Questions of science)

[personal profile] bibliocorn 2017-11-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Or, indeed, an act that could create a world of hoomans.

[He waves a hoof at the space around them, happy to find some common ground. ]

You were enjoying the library, too? Do you have anything interesting from your world you could recommend? I'd love to learn more.

You could always have any food you wanted, Chidi. But you knew that!

[ SURPRISE, guess who is standing nearby, inexplicably ]

Unfortunately, I have no information about the source of all this, but I would be happy to help you find something that seems safe.

[ She can't lie to him about the dangers of consuming potentially-magical food, but she will try her darndest to make him feel better!! ]

In the meantime, can I get you an antacid?

JANET

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Chidi jumps. You'd think he'd be used to Janet popping up like that. But right now he's a little off balance.]

You don't know what the source of this food. But you know everything.

SMOOCH

[personal profile] janets 2017-11-29 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct. But, this place seems to exist outside of 'everything,' which, of course, doesn't make sense. Unfortunately, the entire pocket dimension of Wonderland seems fond of not making sense, so it existing outside of everything else makes sense, here.

[ Janet leans in, still smiling, hands behind her back. ]

It hurts my brain.
filibusteredrecess: (wjh032)

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-11-30 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, mine too. [Especially since apparently it's so out of everything that even Janet doesn't know about it. That's... very concerning.]

How long have you been here? How are you here?
janets: (Default)

[personal profile] janets 2017-12-04 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been here for 5 days, 17 hours, 24 minutes and 14 seconds. I am here as a result of - unclear.

[ She smiles, still, as if this is an acceptable answer. ]

Unfortunately, since we are out of range of my current neighborhood, I have lost access to my abilities. This makes it difficult for me to get around. Still, I'll try and help you as best I can.
filibusteredrecess: (wjh088)

[personal profile] filibusteredrecess 2017-12-06 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
But... you're still... [He waves a hand.] Functional?
