Apparently so.

[Definitely from the future then, and one where Rip has apparently not found favor with this woman. Given her now apparent associations, he would expect she could piece together the circumstances herself--and yet, he's not exactly willing to wait around for the various pieces to fall into place.

Particularly not with the annoyance so evident in her greeting.]

But you have me at something of a disadvantage. I've no idea who you are, although your transmission made it quite clear that we do have certain comrades in common.

You're not exactly comrades anymore.

[Which is probably a cold thing to say, but she doesn't particularly care about Rip's feelings ... at all. She doesn't say it to be cruel, but she knows how timelines work.]

You went off and got yourself another team. I came after that.

[But she's still going to stay mum on who she is for a moment, weighing her options.]

[She speaks but few words, yet their impact shows quite clear on his face; Rip's surprise is obvious, for although he may have had certain suspicions there has never been this sharp of a confirmation. Everyone before has understood that, on principle, details of the future were better left unsaid--at least to Rip, though heaven only knows what they shared among themselves.]

...Right; well. [He reaches up, lightly pinching the bridge of his nose.] I suppose that does explain why I didn't get a mention on your list of names. The only other one here from the Legends is Dr. Palmer, by the way, although he may not recognize you either.

[She weighs the pros and cons of that for a moment, before giving a small shrug. Ray's perpetually easy to win over. Him forgetting her probably won't make much of a difference, and at least she'll be prepared for him this time.]

I think Ray and I will be fine.

[But how to figure out what to do about Rip.]

My name's Zari Tomaz. I'm from 2042.

[personal profile] directed 2017-12-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Her assessment likely isn't wrong; Ray tends to be put off by very little, and if this woman and he are comrades in the future, they likely will end up being so in Wonderland as well.

No, far more concerning at present is the woman's continued wariness about Rip himself--though she does decide to offer up a name and a year, for what that is worth.]

Rip Hunter, as you know. From 2166--although I haven't been to that particular year for quite some time. [Since they captured Vandal Savage, in fact, and brought him before the Time Masters. It's long been an easy claim for Rip, but now it doesn't feel quite so true.]

How much have you learned of this place? I can give you the general rundown, if you'd like--although I will warn you that it's all quite impossible sounding.
hackedhistory: (06)

[personal profile] hackedhistory 2017-12-05 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Any more impossible than a traveling on a time machine with people who broke history that one time?

[That, at least, should give her a real gauge of what Rip does in fact know. She then reaches over and holds up the welcome pamphlet.]

I got the welcome package.

[Another shock, and this time, Rip's mouth opens, though he's rather speechless at first. The words broke history are hardly ones he ever wants to here, and yet here she is, spouting them out with apparent ease.

Dear lord, just what has happened--or will happen?

Except Rip understands all too well where that headache can lead. So it's fortunate that she knows about where she is, because Rip holds up a hand.]

Ms. Tomaz: as I've already implied, I am from the past, at least so far as our mutual timeline is concerned. Now, while Wonderland does not let us keep any memories of what we learn here at present, I would rather not risk taking that circumstance for granted by learning too much of what is to come--including, it would seem, breaking history.

[Because knowing too much about the future can so often lead to something far worse. Certainly, certainly if the Legends have taken her under their wing, someone must have told her as much.]

But as answer to your question, it is, in fact, quite often far more impossible than that, yes.

Good to know.

[She rolls her eyes a bit at his lecture about revealing the future because she did do some of her research.]

Look, saying you're from the past? Doesn't mean much in terms of me. I've only been with the Legends a few months, and from what I can tell, for you, them creating all the anachronisms was at least five years ago, maybe more.

[She picks up the Pines' Twins pamphlet this time.]

Plus, if this thing is accurate, this place works like one of our memory wipe things, so you won't remember all of this anyway.

[His head lowers for a moment, the frustration building as Zari seems to either not understand nor care the fundamental basis of Rip's request. Honestly, if it has been a few months, then certainly that is more than enough time for someone to have mentioned the consequences of knowing too much about the future, isn't it?]

For the me that exists at that point, perhaps. For the me standing in front of you now, that time is apparently several years away. From my perspective, the Legends were attempting to find and destroy a relic called the Spear of Destiny, if you have heard of it.

[And if not--well. Chalk it up to another set of lessons that have apparently gone untaught.

The cover of the pamphlet is enough for Rip to recognize it. He draws in a breath, then nods.]
It is, but as I said--caution is still wise. Anyone knowing too much about their own future puts that future at risk. And if all you've said is true, the last thing I want is to do any more damage to the timeline than is apparently already going to be done.

[And because he cannot help it, Rip continues on; he has certain expectations of at least one of his (former) team:]

Sure Miss Lance has impressed that much upon you by this point.

[personal profile] hackedhistory 2017-12-07 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[That wasn't her point. Her point was that how was she supposed to know that Rip was that far behind everything. Saying he's from the past is a fairly unspecific descriptor.]

Well, if jeopardizing the future means you being less of an ass, then I could probably live with that.

[She's also not fond of the Time Bureau, so if Rip stays with the Legends, maybe things would be different. Then again, she may also be dead. IT'S HARD TO HACK HISTORY WHEN SHE DOESN'T HAVE GIDEON TO HELP HER.]

And honestly, what been impressed upon me is that is what you do, and having seen you in action, I'm under the impression that it's not always the best course of action to take. Sometimes there are ways to get around anachronisms without having people suffer as a result.

[Fantastic. Another recruit whom apparently doesn't get on with Rip.

Not that personality conflicts particularly bother him; Rip generally isn't overly concerned with whether someone likes him or not. But having gone through his share of frustrations with the Legends in the early days, as well as in Wonderland? This would be significantly less of a pain if Miss Tomaz weren't quite so flippant about the matter in general.

Flippant--or flat out defiant. She talks about getting around anachronisms, drawing a deeper frown to Rip's mouth. The implication is clear, and precisely the opposite of all he has taught the Legends about the duty of protecting time.]

That is a dangerous and reckless attitude, Miss Tomaz. [Would it be preferable to avoid causing undue suffering? Of course. But Rip, of all people, is quite aware that suffering is quite often a part of history as it unfolds.] Perhaps Miss Lance and the Legends have not impressed upon you how small changes can have profound impact on the timeline--but I can only hope they will.

[If he has truly left them. If has truly handed over that legacy to Sara and the others, Rip has to believe they will.]

[God, and this is why she doesn't like him. Being talked down to like she's some kind of idiot when she's played by the major rules. She hasn't gone to try and save her brother or her family, no matter how much she's wanted to.]

Oh, forgive me for trying to make the world suck a little less. It's easy for you to sit on your high horse, from wherever the hell you are in the future and say how these people's lives don't matter, but sometimes people deserve a goddamn break. People don't have to suffer for history to still happen.

History doesn't care if a woman who men were willing to murder over disappears in the middle of a war. The war is still fought, and she gets to live a better life. Win-win.

[And she SO wants to throw it in his face that at least she is making things better for someone, rather than resurrecting a dangerous murderer just to see what would happen, but he doesn't want to know about his future, so she at least manages enough will power to keep her mouth shut on that subject.]

[personal profile] directed 2017-12-11 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
[No doubt it would be worse if she knew about Rip's own hypocrisy: how he himself had been content to sit on the sidelines of Vandal Savage's heartless conquest, until London fell and with it his own wife and son. The manipulations of the Time Masters make him no less guilty of that crime, no matter how he might equally cite the millions of others who also died on those slaughtering grounds.

But Rip cannot know if Zari has been told that story--and he will not speak of it himself.]

I never said their lives don't matter, Miss Tomaz. [The smaller the scope, the more profound the measure of each of those beings. Rip knows this; that truth is what made him different from his fellows, who had accused him of not seeing the grander picture.]

You saved one woman; congratulations. [He refuses to pick apart the details too much, to speculate on which woman and which war that might be.] What makes her more deserving than the woman cut down in her place, or the child just beyond them? There are always innocents, people who do not deserve the fates thrust upon them.

[Always a town called Calvert, able to be burnt to the ground.]

Your intentions are good, and all due credit to you for that. But when you take it upon yourself to decide who lives and who dies simply because you might have found a loophole?

You become dangerously arrogant.
hackedhistory: (06)

[personal profile] hackedhistory 2017-12-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing makes her more deserving. I would have done the same no matter which woman of that war fell through that anachronism. If I don't reach out and try to help the people I can, then what kind of person does that make me?

[She doesn't remember what happened to Helen of Troy in the original story, before the anachronism picked her up and deposited her in the Golden Age of Hollywood, but no matter what happened, the story ends the same.]

I'm not picking and choosing across history. I'm not trying to play God. I'm just trying to do good.

[It all sounds so lovely and noble, doesn't it? And in that way, he supposes that Zari does fit in well with so many of the Legends: Martin and Jax and Raymond, and Sara so very, very often. But he's called it dangerous twice now, with good reason.]

And yet in spite of your stated goals, playing God is in every effect what you are doing. [Zari stands at the start of the path, it would seem; Rip has lived through it's continuation.] There must always be limits, Miss Tomaz. Protecting time is not the same as being a hero.

Those who take up that mantle are not afford the luxury of wondering about the manner of person they will become.

[She rolls her eyes. She understands that stopping the anachronisms comes first. She never said she was getting in the way of that. But she's not going to apologize for helping the people she could.]

It's easy for you to say when you're not the anachronism who's life has been upended.
