[Zari glances up at the familiar voice and for a moment she looks excited, because thank goodness it's a person she actually kind of likes. But then she remembers that Ray probably doesn't remember her, so she tries to tamp that down as quickly as possible and focuses on the question at hand.

She shakes her head.]

Testing the limits of the closet. It hasn't let me down yet.

Oh. Sweet.

[ her excitement prompts him to smile, because yeah hey hi new friends are pretty great right? ]

Uhhh so. You like, want a taste tester, maybe?

[ z save him pls he eats pizza every day ]

Sure.

[Also pizza every day is great, but she wants to try everything.]

I'm Zari, by the way.

[ he's already got a mouthful of something gluten-full, and just talks through the food-- ]

Ray. I'm Ray. [ and this dumpling is very tasty if his hum of delight is any indication! ] So, uhh, you're new here, then?

Yeah. I just got here.

[She moves to settle across from him.]

This whole timelines mess is really weird, right? I'm surprised this place isn't imploding with all the paradoxes.

[ he freezes for a moment, his own assumption coloring his reaction. has she seen him on the network talking nerd stuff or something? he can't get rid of the bug eyes, but he does nod in an attempt to sound like he totally know what she's talking about. ]

Mhm. Yep. Lots of those, probably. [ nice recovery dude. nailed it. now change the subject asap it won't be weird at all. ] Not to mention the different universes stuff, too. There are like, some real icons here. And Leia was here once, too!

[Give her a moment, she might catch up, but her military upbringing didn't leave her with a lot in the ways of pop culture.]

[ big nodding! the bait has been taken and now he doesn't have to sound smart, phew. ]

[ ... whoops. She regrets that as soon as she says it.]

[ it's an easy retort to a true statement, but ray stiffens his posture a little. they do know each other, then. why can't he remember her name? those usually come pretty easily to him! ]

Besides, it's not just a space movie.

[There's a beat, and she feels like it's better to come clean than worry about it too much.]

And before you freak out, I know you but I don't think we've met yet. Or at least according to Rip we probably haven't. I'm fairly new to the Waverider.

[ his turn for blinking and processing. that old weight presses on him momentarily before he remembers himself, and takes a deep breath. ]

Ohh! I'm not-- uhh, I'm never sure how to do this. Like, I'm that Ray, kinda? But sorta different. Never been on the Waverider, actually. Or, I can't remember it? It's a whole weird ... thing.

[ . . . . . . ]

... What?

[That makes no sense. She pauses for a moment, before straightening again.]

What do you mean?

[ eep. this is why he usually just tries to go with the flow and be the doctor people expect. ]

I'm a janitor.

[ he reaches up to his backwards cap to readjust it so that the brim and label face zari. he shrugs. ]

I just work maintenance at STAR Labs.

[And there's some more squinting before she tips her head to the side.]

So you're like ... a Ray from a different Earth?

Kinda?

[ it's a blink fest up in here lol ]

You could think of it that way, yeah. Probably be easiest. Cause I don't really get all the stuff about alternate worlds and the time travel stuff.

Got it. You're another Ray.

[It actually is easier because it feels less complicated than him not having met her yet. There's no weight of their relationship for him to live up to. She's just Zari, meeting this other guy named Ray for the first time, and while she may know a Ray, she doesn't know this Ray.

She's picked up enough with alternate universes to be able to pull off that much.]

Would it be better if we just start over?

Only if you want to. [ he shrugs again, looser now that the weight has lifted a little. ] I've gotten better at pretending to be the old me, but once people want me to make them something specific I start losing it.

Well, you don't have to worry about that for me. I can make my own tech.

[And sometimes does it better than her Ray, but she won't actually voice that out loud.]

[ he's still eating while talking btw very messy and not at all polite ]

I'm more a hacker than an engineer, but I can jerry-rig stuff sometimes.
