A bit of both, honestly.

[The woman seems to be warming up, but he's still cautious. Mabari are fiercely loyal to their masters and stronger than most grown men - a word from her and Maric'd have his throat ripped out before he could blink. Still he gives the dog a cheery wave--they're the symbol of his country, after all--and cautiously holds out a hand for the hound to inspect.]

And...where is Wonderland, exactly?

[Nowhere on the maps of Thedas he'd studied as a child, that was certain.]

I'm...Hyram, by the way.

[He's used that alias before, with disastrous consequences, but it's the only name that pops into his head besides Loghain. He doesn't think his friend will be very happy if he takes that one.]
heroica: (and live without shame)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-21 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in Thedas. [ Unhelpful, she knows, but she's only been around for a month or so and still hasn't found an explanation that suits her. ] It also has nothing to do with the Fade and apparently involves a lot of magic, though I'm told it is, in fact, real.

[ Oren stiffens, but he does move forward to sniff the proffered hand with vigor. Once satisfied, he pants and nudges hard at Maric's fingers, wanting more attention. ]

My lord. [ She smiles, still unfamiliar with the name, but happy to offer her own. ] My name is Robyn Cousland, of the Grey Wardens. Happily, there is no Warden business to be done, here.

[ That is, no Blight, and no Darkspawn. Surely anyone would be glad for that news. ]
therebelprince: (look)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-21 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Maric scratches absently behind the hound's ears as an increasingly horrified look spreads across his face. Not in Thedas? Then where is he?

At least before, he could conceivably be rescued, even if it meant risking the entire army to do so. Arl Rendorn would insist on it--the line of Calenhad the Great was far too important and must be preserved. But if there was magic involved...]

...Oh. And I'm going to assume that there are ways to get back? Because I was in the middle of something rather important. Life and death, actually.

[He blinks at her name. Of course he recognizes it. The Couslands have been staunch supporters of the rebel cause since his grandfather's time and Highever has suffered for it under the Orlesian occupation. He bows, taking advantage of the courtly manners he was taught and rarely uses.]

Forgive me, my lady. I didn't realize that Teyrn Cousland had a daughter. I also didn't realize that there were any Fereldan Grey Wardens. What with them being banned from the country and all.
heroica: ('cause what's in a name)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-21 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in our control. People seem to come and go at random; we are unable to simply walk or sail away. It manages to be its own separate entity, this... realm.

[ Oren seems more than happy to stand and have his ears attended to. Robyn is slightly warier at the confusion, but explains with a curious patience. ]

You may better know my brother, Fergus. Had... known, rather.

[ Andraste guide him, and the rest of her family. The betrayal still burns hot and angry in her heart, but she sighs deeply and sets it aside. ]

They-... That was changed under King Maric. [ He's definitely Ferelden, but, perhaps: ] Have you been out of the country for very long?

[ Though it wasn't as if it was small news. ]
therebelprince: (serious thinking)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-21 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Maric's look of dismay deepens when Robyn gives him that particular bit of news.]

Maker's breath. That's...not good.

[Maybe Loghain is right to distrust magic as much as he did. Maric can't say he blames him anymore. First the Witch, and now this? The Witch's prediction was that there would be a Blight, but he wouldn't live to see it. Is that what's happening now? Is that why he's talking to a Grey Warden nowhere near Ferelden?]

I can't say that I've ever had the pleasure of meeting Teyrn Cousland's son; I only know him by reputation. Though I thought his name was Bryce? [He bows again.] It appears that my information may have been incorrect.

[Then the Warden says that name and Maric breaks out in an uncontrollable coughing fit. King Maric? King?]

I'm sorry, I must have misheard you. Did you say King Maric? The, er, Rebel Prince?

That's a bit bold, don't you think?

heroica: (you can call me anything you want)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-21 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all. But I've also been told that time stands still while we're here; that is, no one will notice you're gone and you won't remember being here in the first place. Or, so they say. I've yet to experience it, myself.

[ Dorian's been through it, she knows. ]

Bryce Cousland is my father. [ HANG ON. It seems as if something is happening again with time, speaking of, just as it had with Brennan and Morrigan. She'd remembered the least in their collective memory... until now. ] You knew my... grandfather, then? William?

[ Despite the misunderstandings, she puts forth what she hopes is a reassuring smile. ]

My lord, I think I know what's happened. We've come from different times. What year is it, or - which was it, when you left?
therebelprince: (Default)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-21 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Magic again? Maric groans. He's been here half an hour and he already hates the place. How can time stand still?

That is, of course, assuming he can trust this woman. Didn't the Grey Wardens try to assassinate the King of Ferelden the last time they were allowed in the country?]

Your father? Wait, that's...I do know Teyrn William. He... [Offered food, supplies, and shelter to the Rebel Queen a few times? Yelled at me for chasing his prize mabari puppy when I was seven?] We met. Once.

Different times. Right. It's the 99th year of the Blessed Age, isn't it?
heroica: (you can call it what you want)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-21 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It... was where you left, yes. But... I was taken from 9:31 Dragon, in the next Age.

[ She says, gently. It's difficult to accept and understand; she knows, considering she'd experienced the same with the Inquisitor, who'd had to tell her that he was from a decade or so later. That he knew of her own future while she did not. ]

If this is too much for you, I can explain once you've had some time to rest.
therebelprince: (serious thinking)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-21 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Dragon Age, huh? The Devine in Val Royeaux are getting a bit presumptuous, aren't they? He gives her a wry smile and then his expression changes, becomes darker.]

How do I know I can trust you?
heroica: (you can call us what you want)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-22 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid I know firsthand how flimsy trust can be. [ The deaths of her family is a prime example of what happens to those who trust blindly and without question. So she sighs softly, considering; meanwhile, Oren returns to her side, sitting down and continuing to pant. ]

You don't, really. And I won't press. But, if you find you have more questions, you're welcome to ask. It needn't be me; there are dozens of others who arrived just as we did, though there are only two more from Thedas.
therebelprince: (Default)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-22 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Maric decides to change the subject so that he doesn't have to dwell on the fact that apparently there are people here that aren't from Thedas, which he finds endlessly perplexing.]

You said King Maric. Does that mean that in your, er, future, the rebels won?

[Just keep it casual.]
Edited 2015-09-22 00:34 (UTC)
heroica: (what a difference of the rushing out)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's my past, but still your future. [ She corrects kindly, again smiling. ] Are you sure you want to know?

[ She'd let Brennan tell her of her own fate; that had been an easy decision, somehow. But this man wasn't asking of his own future in the same way, though the result of the war would still likely determine the direction of his life.

Potentially. She doesn't yet realize how much. ]
therebelprince: (armor distant look)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Does he? He doesn't know who she is, not really. She claims to be the granddaughter of the Teyrn Cousland he met as a boy, and a Grey Warden at that. A Grey Warden from the future, no less. It was laughable. Even Maric, who generally prefers to see the good in people, doesn't think he can trust her. The situation is completely ridiculous.

Maybe this is all a dream. Maybe the battle happened at Gwaren and he's deliriously imagining all of this while birds pick at his entrails.

Maybe this really is the Fade.

Still...]

Yes, I really do.

[He really is awfully curious about whether or not the Warden's version of his future matches up with the one foretold by the witch.]

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-22 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She won't deny that the situation is laughable and ridiculous, but that doesn't make it untrue. ]

All right. [ Small steps. Bits and pieces. ] Yes, the rebels won and their leaders took to power. They did it well; their prince became a very good king.

[ He'd begun a number of changes within Ferelden. And done a few other things that she's personally (and privately) grateful for. ]

What else would you like to know?
therebelprince: (angry)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-22 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[At that, Maric breaks out into slightly bitter laughter.]

And that's where I know you're lying. Prince Maric doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground, so he's not exactly king material.

[How could he be a good king? If it weren't for Loghain and Rowan and Arl Rendorn, he'd be lost. He doesn't even lead his rebels--they do.

But there is something he's curious about.]

You're a Warden. Does that mean there is another Blight?
heroica: (all the broken chords and unnamed cries)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-22 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's true, I've never met him, but... [ Robyn looks at him with mild scrutiny, considering him. ] You seem to have a more personal grudge, if you'll pardon the assumption.

[ There's something in his expression; had he known the man or, rather, does he know Maric? ]

Would that I could say no. [ There's a small, sad smile. ] But, yes. A true Blight, Archdemon and all.
therebelprince: (quirky look)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-23 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Should he say it? Should he give the game away to a Grey Warden in this completely mad place?]

It's not so much about me having a grudge as people having a grudge against me. [He gives her an elaborate bow.] Prince Maric Theirin, at your service. For what it's worth.

[And then the Warden confirms what he was fearing. The Witch was right.]

And here I halfway thought that the Darkspawn were just children's stories. Is...well, am I... [He takes a deep breath.]

How bad is it, for Ferelden?
heroica: (i still remain the same)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-23 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Maker, she shouldn't be surprised, not after the way he'd spoken of Maric, but she can't fault him for hiding his identity. Robyn knows of the war, has read of the things the would-be king had faced and managed; it's easy to understand why he wouldn't immediately trust her, let alone a Grey Warden.

She sweeps quickly into a curtsy, head ducked. ]

Your Majesty, forgive me. I ought to have recognized you.

[ Never mind that he's much younger and she's never actually seen King Maric before. It explains why he looks so much like Alistair, she thinks, suddenly, but that... is for another time. ]

What I spoke was true. [ She says, rising. ] And... it hasn't been easy; the effects have been felt across the country. But we've done the best we can, and I'm told that we are able to defeat the Archdemon within the year.

[ A blessing, isn't it? She smiles thinly, not eager to pursue the topics of his fate or the fates of his children. Or... of Loghain. ]
therebelprince: (quirky look)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-23 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[He watches her display with a slightly alarmed look on his face. Maybe he shouldn't have told her after all. He always feels awkward when people are so formal around him.]

Um, Highness, actually. I, er, haven't been crowned yet. And really, just Maric's fine. There isn't much Your Royal Highness-ing in a rebel camp anyway.

[His expression darkens as she continues to tell him about the Blight.]

It's not fair. The people have already suffered so much under the Orlesians, and now a Blight. I have never seen a Darkspawn, but I've read about the corruption and disease and mayhem they bring with them. Maker preserve us.
heroica: (in this brief hole of a town)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-23 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in your time, I know. I'm sorry; this can get very confusing.

[ It'll be hard to call him just by 'Maric' with the level of formality she was brought up on, but she'll try, at least. She does still refer to Brennan as the Inquisitor more often than not. ]

It could have been much worse. The entire kingdom was able to come together and lend their air because of our treaties.
therebelprince: (Default)

[personal profile] therebelprince 2015-09-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[A Blight. A real, honest Blight. With Grey Wardens and an Archdemon and everything.

And, if the Witch was right, Maric isn't going to live to see it.]

I'm glad your treaties are being honored. Are you getting much support from the Crown?
heroica: (you can call it what you want)

[personal profile] heroica 2015-09-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ Mmph. The Crown. ]

Well - [ No, the answer is no, because there is no one on the throne. She thinks of Anora, of Cailin and Loghain and Alistair, and how the Landsmeet is looming over them all like an obelisk. ]

Not... exactly. Your Grace.

[ Robyn worries briefly at her lip, debating intensely within her own mind. ]

It's fairly complicated, actually. But - the treaties. Yes, we've managed to gain the support of the Dalish, of Orzammar, of the mages and Arl Aemon, too. Without all of their help, it wouldn't be possible.
