[she moves closer to him, not quite getting in his space, but definitely closer.]
Coffee and something that isn't top ramen, come on. I'll try and find the way back. Did you know the library sometimes moves? Like, sometimes you can get there from the third floor, and sometimes...
[she trails off. she's just talking to talk. it's nerves, it's fear, whatever. talking to talk, which is a little pointless. she holds out her arm for matt.]
Well, it doesn't matter. I'm pretty sure the kitchen is always on the first floor, so we can't get too lost.
no subject
[ Matt easily moves into Karen's space and smiles, for what it's worth. He could feel her nerves even if she wasn't rambling. ]
Sounds like the more I learn about this place, the less sense it makes.
[ Never mind what a nightmare it would be to have to find a room that moves when you're blind, that is not how rooms work. He makes a bit of a show to reach and hold onto her arm but his hold is firm. He promised he'd look out for her once, this is no different. ]
Lead the way.
[ And if the rooms really do move he's going to need her help no matter what. ]
no subject
[which she's clearly about to launch into, before she takes a glance around the immediate space near matt]
We're not leaving anything behind, right?
[who knows what happens to things you leave behind, really. but after confirmation theyre not, she heads towards the last place she saw a door, praying its still there.]
Did you know, for example, that the kitchen changes every day? Yesterday, it looked like a 50s style diner, but when I went down for breakfast it was all Formica countertops and it looked like it came out of someone's trailer-home.
[which was to say, it was also a lot smaller.]
That's crazy, right? Spaces don't work like that.
no subject
[ rip Matt ][ Okay, realistically, that's like 50% of how he gets by, but you'll find out about his powers eventually, Karen. He still has his cane folded up and in his coat pocket, and for all that he might not need it, it might at least help him avoid the floor changing in front of him, apparently. ]
Even if they remodeled things overnight, that wouldn't explain how a library is supposed to move floors.
no subject
These are all two-hundreds. So second floor it is. [but perhaps more to the point really:] Is a library moving floors really that much stranger to you than a magical world that kidnaps people and gives them whatever they want now that they've taken them?
[karen bites her lower lip. it means she's thinking, the wheels of her brain turning as she tries to figure out the motive here. why do those things? why kidnap them at all.]
And then there's this whole thing with the Queen? [whoops, thinking out loud. but she kind of thinks matt doesn't mind. or at least she hopes he doesn't. she misses ben; she misses figuring things out alongside of him. she frowns, tensing for a moment, trying to stave off thinking about him. she'd have time to mourn later; that had almost become like a mantra. later, when things settled down. later, when they've solved their pressing problems. that's what ben would've wanted.] What's her angle, though? Maybe the mirror people weren't enough, or -- or, maybe she doesn't get the mirror people without stealing real people.
no subject
[ Matt's not too big on the kidnapping thing-- it'd be one thing if this were Daredevil related, but when it's random like this, it seriously feels like the Avengers should be involved somehow. ]
If she's trying to build some kind of army, I guess it would make sense. That's usually how it goes with these things, right?
[ That's more Foggy's realm of expertise, Matt is not nearly genre-savvy enough for this. ]
no subject
[true, foggy probably would try to make a pop culture reference or five, but karen is trying to stick with actual things that actually happen in reality and none of this seems like it's got anything to do with that. she does take the time to consider what matt's saying as she leads them towards the stairs.]
She's already in control here, though. Why build an army? Who is she going to attack?
no subject
[ She said it herself, they got kidnapped into some magic house that grants wishes. Things could not get much weirder. ]
Good question. [ He shrugs. ] Maybe if we could ask her, it'd get us closer to figuring out why we're here in the first place.
no subject
[karen's definitely agitated by the suggestion. the queen was a tyrant, who ruled over wonderland with an iron fist and kidnapped people]
What, she's just going to tell us her whole plan? And then the avengers can just swoop on in and save the day? I'm pretty sure that's not how it goes at all.
[it hits a nerve, but only because the stuff with fisk was so recent. only because they could've never just waltzed on up to him and asked him why he did the shitty things he did.
then again, she'd been told exactly why she'd been kidnapped last time. she'd also shot someone in the face for it. so lets just go with there's definitely not a usually for this at all.]
no subject
[ Obviously Matt is more of a storm the castle or sneak into the castle as it were but he's gotta at least pretend. ]
There isn't much we can do besides talk in theory.
no subject
[but this conversation has gotten them to the kitchen, so hooray for that.]
no subject
[ This is Fisk all over again, Karen!! Don't do it! ]
That kind of thing only gets people killed.
[ Unless you're Daredevil, duh. ]
no subject
We're here. I'll start the coffee. It's still trailer-home-kitchen, so it's a little cramped.
[she slips out of his arm and goes to start the coffee machine. at least it's a lot like the one in the office - horrible, but within her range of expertise to use.]
no subject
Thanks. I've uh, I've actually never been inside a trailer home, so I wouldn't know.
no subject
[at least her voice is lighter for the comment. sometimes its hard for her to remember that matt really hasn't ever left new york, or that not being able to watch tv limits his experience with things. it makes up for his stubbornness in a way, a balance to it.]
And now you have an idea.
no subject
[ That's one way to put it. ]
At least the coffee smells good.
no subject
You don't have to say that.
[on either count, really. but it's not her kitchen, there's no need to pay it, or the shitty coffee that's coming from it, any compliments.]
What should we eat?
no subject
[ Matt shrugs. Visual descriptions vex him. ]
What do people normally eat on road trips?
[ Talking to Mr. "Never Left NYC Before." ]
no subject
[she's confused for a second, trying to figure out where that logical leap came from.]
No, no, the trailer homes that stay in trailer home parks. [beat] Unless you feel like this whole Wonderland thing is like a road trip, in which case you have really low standards, buddy.
no subject
[ Look, he's very lost, he's so bad at this. ]
It is the farthest I've ever been from New York, so I guess we can go with that.
no subject
[matt may know about ninjas but he's pretty bad at Real World Stuff. It's okay though that's why he has trusty less-than-willing sidekicks.
tbh it's mildly endearing, in the way children are mildly endearing while you can still give them back to their parents at the end of a conversation.
anyways, after a moment:]
You're seriously considering top ramen, aren't you?
no subject
It'd be a taste from home.
[ After a beat: ]
Think they can make Thai food like the one down the street from the office?
no subject
Well, it would definitely taste like something.
[she shuts the cabinet and goes for the fridge, which, hey, has something that smells like day old thai food.]
If there's no name on leftovers, do you think they're free for anyone?
no subject
[ Look okay, some people like crappy food maybe it's a martyr thing or a growing-up-orphaned thing, we'll never know. ]
I've never let names on leftovers stop me.
[ Get it, since he's blind. He totally shrugs. ]
no subject
[i mean come on thats the only reason she and foggy dont complain about things going missing in the fridge although she has the lurking suspicion that foggy is the true thief]
