[The knife slipped. Tim managed to get his hand out of the way in time that he only shaved off part of a fingernail, rather than losing a fingertip, but his surprise was obvious. In Tim's own universe, Tetch hadn't started operating until Bruce was an adult. Not a teenager Tim's own age or a little younger.]

I bet it was a nasty schock waking up in Wonderland, then.

[It certainly had been for him]

I've dealt with worse.

[Although Tim's reaction...was telling. Of what, Bruce couldn't be sure, but it was enough to get him to sit up straight.]

Are you alright?

[He glanced over, then resumed his progress with his vegetables.]

I've heard of Tetch. I guess I was surprised that you had too.

[Both brows rose.]

You're from Gotham?

[That was the only explanation for why someone else would know that name, and react accordingly. And...it would make sense. It wasn't as if Bruce knew every person in the city. And Barbara was here. Why not others?]

[He nodded.]

Born and raised.

[Huh. An...interesting twist.]

Then that makes three of us. That I know of.

Have you spoken to Barbara yet?

[Tim's eyes widened a little in surprise and he set his knife down to turn to look again.]

Barbara? Barbara Gordon is here?

[Gordon]

That's--no, you must be mistaken. [He tried to play it off, but the curiosity was there. Suspicion.] Detective Gordon and Miss Kean broke up a long time ago. She...used to be a kind person, but something happened to her.

She was in Arkham for a while, but either was let out or escaped. It's getting difficult to keep track of which.

[Well, that... Is a thing. He shook his head once.]

I've never met Ms. Kean. The Barbara Gordon I was referring to is Commissioner Gordon's daughter. She's a friend of mine. [He smiled a little.] We play computer games.

[Hacking games.]

[Computer-related things are was Lucius Fox was for.]

I'm afraid...I don't recognize the name.

But I apologize if I got your hopes up. There were...others I had hoped to see here as well. Though maybe it's better they aren't.

[Well, it wasn't the first time he'd gotten his hopes up. It probably wouldn't be the last.]

It's all right. I think I'm getting used to it, unfortunately. [He gave him a wry smile.] There are a few almost-familiar-but-not-quite faces for me here.

May I ask who they are?

[Something about this whole conversation wasn't sitting well with Bruce. Tim was kind, but it was almost as if...he was talking about Gotham, but a wrong Gotham. With names that didn't quite match. Commisioner. Barbara Gordon. Somehow, Tetch was the only name that did match between them, which made things all the more confusing.]

[It was as if...someone had studied up on Gotham without ever setting foot inside the city, and gotten their names mixed up.]

[It was a good thing Tim wasn't very hungry, because this was by far the slowest meal prep he had ever done. He sighed and turned to lean back against the counter.]

Well, you, for one. But the you I know is about... twenty-five or thirty years older. Give or take.

[Silence. For nearly a full minute.]

[He had...heard something about this. Discrepcies with people's memories. Time. It was the only reason Bruce hadn't shut Tim down there and then. It was far too ludicrous a story to lie about, anyway.]

If what you say is true...then...I suppose that means you haven't been born yet. In my time.

[What a strange sentence to have to utter.]

...are you saying that Jim Gordon eventually becomes commissioner of the GCPD?

[Tim appreciated that Bruce didn't dismiss his words out of hand. It made the whole conversation that much easier, to not have to prove the unprovable.]

No, I don't think I would have been. [He smiled a little.] Which might explain why you don't recognize me. We're kind of friends, by my time.

And yeah, he does. Definitely one of the best commissioners Gotham's ever had.

[He nodded absently, mind still whirring.]

Good. That's good. For him. And Gotham. He deserves it.

[Jim had been working so hard even since Bruce knew him. Trying to do the right thing. Fighting against literal insanity. Being falsely convicted and attacked so many times, even Bruce had lost count. And yet, the last he knew, Jim was still at the station. Still fighting for Gotham.]

I have to admit, I am tempted to ask just how we met...but I'm not entirely sure I should. If you really are from a time in my future.

[Even though he was so, so curious. And had way more questions besides that.]

[That got a grin from Tim. Of course he wanted to know everything. So would Tim, in his place. It just wouldn't do either of them any good.]

If it helps, I don't think we get to remember any of this when we get home, so you can ask away. It just might get kind of. Complicated.

[And speaking of...the first question on his mind...]

You wouldn't happen to know a woman named Selina Kyle?

Um. We've met a few times.

[Was he blushing? He hoped he wasn't blushing.]

[...was Tim blushing?]

Then she's still okay.

[Stop being observant.]

Uh. Yeah. She's fine. Great.

[He paused, then frowned. Okay, no, the timeline on this was way off. He knew that his Bruce hadn't met Selina until he was Batman, and the boy in front of him was way too young for that.]

Wait, how do you know Selina?

[Can't stop, won't stop. Ever.]

She's my...

[Although his voice trailed off, unsure of how to finish that sentence. Girlfriend was the first word that came to mine, but he knew Selina would hate it. She didn't like labels. Even when Ivy had asked, she'd denied they were a couple. Even though they definitely were. Probably.]

...we've known each other for a while now.

Although she's currently mad at me. [Again.]

[Wow, Selina and Bruce were fighting. There's the biggest surprise that ever wasn't. Tim was almost relieved, because that at least fit within the paradigm he was used to for the two of them. But there was a lot more that was confusing.]

...I don't think the two of us are from the same universe.

[Bruce didn't seem all that surprised either, though perhaps for different reasons.]

May I ask what drew you to that conclusion, exactly?

[He shrugged a little, giving him a wry grin.] The Bruce I know didn't meet Selina until they were both adults. Maybe he might have heard of Jervis Tetch when he was younger--though I doubt it--but I'm pretty sure about Selina.
