I said-- [ it's her feet that move first to shift her weight-- and her elbow follows, aiming without looking. b'elanna turns and puts that body weight behind the sharp blow she intends to plant in yet another native's face-- ]

Back off!

[ the reflex is automatic: dodge, catch, twist, pin. she's well aware of the fact that b'elanna could throw her off at any moment, but she's hoping she caught the other woman off guard long enough to get through to her. ]

Lieutenant! Calm down. It's me.

[ but for a few circumstances (within a less rigid social context; while elbow-deep in reprogramming, rebuilding, refitting, etc), it's always taken effort for b'elanna to exert control over her anger.

anger is easy for her-- tactile and usable. but that voice using her title, it breaks through the white heat of gut instinct made real. she all but goes limp after a moment.
]

Captain! I'm sorry, I thought-- [ that she was all alone here. she smirks, letting another sort of surprise pierce through: ] Nice reflexes.

[ only when the tense muscles beneath her hands relax and her chief engineer acknowledges her identity does janeway release her and take a hearty step back. she's tugging at the sleeves of the now-outlandish gown, pulling them back down in a way that seems to say she's immensely annoyed with the propriety of it all. ]

You're not the only one who's had experience fighting Cardassians, [ she says with a shrug that's designed to be far more modest than it ought to be. that which she brags about is rarely that which she's capable of using against you. ] A few rounds of velocity every now and then does a body good. Unfortunately, that was not the program I was enjoying this evening.

[ obviously. (she hates this dress now. it's being recycled and turned into freshly replicated coffee as soon as they get back to her ship.) ]

[ the haze of rage fading, b'elanna's smirk widens momentarily. nice reflexes, ridiculous dress choice, cap. but as much as she's struggled with starfleet's rigidity in the past, there's something to be said for the responsibility a commanding officer's presence lifts from her shoulders.

and with janeway, it's always pretty easy to fall in line.
]

I'm not convinced it's a program at all, unfortunately. And whatever it is, it wants me to think it's entirely normal.

[ and just saying that seems to beg back some of her frustration, if her sigh is any indication. ]
directives: (┅ ℓxx.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-20 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ and the captain is more than happy to fall into the role of commanding officer. ]

Oh, I don't think it is, either, [ she says, grabbing handfuls of frustratingly cumbersome skirts and motioning with a jerk of her head for b'elanna to walk with her. ] If you ask me, this place is almost sentient in nature. Alive and very aware of what it's doing and who it's doing it to.
aggressor: (pIH)

[personal profile] aggressor 2017-02-21 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sentient.

[ this is a pattern b'elanna is comfortable playing out. from the outside, she imagines it must look very much like she and janeway are competing even as b'elanna falls into step with her. ]

OK, I'll bite. What makes you think that?

[ in reality, they feed off of this back and forth. the problem-solving process made into a game. ]
directives: (┅ ℓii.)

Something about it reminds me of my experiences in the Continuum. A landscape painted in a way that's deliberately designed to cater our perceptions. Maybe we don't have the ability to fully comprehend what's going on here -- or maybe whoever's in charge just doesn't want us to.

[ very much a pattern, and the captain thrives off the push and pull of a good scientific debate/discussion. ]

[ mind games. great, no. b'elanna loves mind games. she super duper loves being messed with. also she loves theory!! this is so awesome and fun and intangible and--

her nostrils won't stop flaring.
]

So we... find a power source and disrupt it.

[ but even b'elanna doesn't sound all that convinced (the amount of power it would take to do what this place has done would be immense). she just really dislikes having no input whatsoever. she chews her lip. ]

Or find whoever's in charge and disrupt them.
directives: (┅ cxi)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-24 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Don't get ahead of yourself, B'Elanna, [ she chides lightly, ] that might be easier said than done. We need to figure out who or what that something is first. For all we know, this so-called "queen" I keep hearing about is nothing more than a smokescreen for a larger entity or organization pulling all the proverbial strings.

[ disrupting them would come later, but you bet she was 100% game for that. kidnap her? fine. kidnap a member of her crew? oh, hell no. ]
aggressor: (trekvoy0239)

[personal profile] aggressor 2017-02-24 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Right.

[ yet again it's her trust in her captain's ability to throw down that tempers b'elanna's reaction. she sighs deeply, blowing the air out in a rush. ]

I think it's all a smokescreen, now that you mention it. I haven't been able to identify the frequency that's blocking communication, but I have a subprogram running to scan each potential band.

[ which could take years and is the sort of gamble someone takes when they've done everything else they could think of. a space hail-mary if you will. and unfortunately, it seems even that won't be a viable solution: ]

I get positive results from every single one.
directives: (┅ viii)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-26 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ oh, you bet she's going to throw down. janeway is having none of this. if this environment expects her to play nice and fall in line with the other inhabitants, from simply residing here to riding out event waves, they've got another thing coming. there are two things kathryn janeway doesn't know how to do: sit still and coast.

she stops, brow knitting together as the gears in her head begin to turn. ]
All of them?
aggressor: (trekvoy0091)

[personal profile] aggressor 2017-03-01 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So far. I've checked the syntax already-- maybe you can take a look at it once we get a breather. Just in case.

[ but having quadruple-checked herself at this point, b'elanna is pretty sure her routines are fine. it's wonderland that's the damn problem. ]

I also can't find anything powering these "magical" closets.
directives: (┅ xℓ.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-03-04 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
[ nodding, nodding. janeway's eager to get her hands on something, and reprogramming a few band frequencies is right up her alley. she may not be half the engineer b'elanna is, but she has a few tricks up her sleeve. ]

Magical... [ a slight scoff, roll of her eyes, and shake of her head. yeah, she doesn't buy that. magic wasn't real, and no amount of proof could convince her otherwise. there was a scientific explanation for everything, and the implausible was simple that which had yet to be explained. ] It's there. Somewhere. Hidden, most likely.
aggressor: (trekvoy0250)

[personal profile] aggressor 2017-03-12 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ having another set of technical eyes on her work means b'elanna can at least shift her focus for now. ]

Somewhere deep. Did you find a device on you when you woke up? Not Starfleet-made. Some kind of low-power primitive access point to a local net. It seems to have a moderate amount of communications on it.

[ she probably would've found more use in hers had she not smashed it to bits after seeing the sort of things that were on it. ]
directives: (┅ xxix.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-03-13 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
This thing? [ she reaches into her pockets, withdrawing what looks like an iphone in a red case. ] Right shade of red, wrong type of device. At least it matches my uniform -- not that I have one here.

[ which clearly serves to annoy her. janeway feels more at home in her pips than anything else these days, and half the civilian clothing she packed before voyager left the alpha quadrant are still sitting in that container she shoved into her closet upon departure from DS9. ]

Keep your combadge on you. I would rather not to rely on such archaic technology if we don't have to.
