YAAAASSSSS
[Wait. He knows that voice.]
... Ray?!
[Zack's abandoning his food to grab at Ray's shoulders.]
Where the hell have you been?! I thought someone fucking stole my kill!
fingerguns
No. I wouldn't let someone make you into a liar.
[She wants to die, but she's very specific. As is only natural.]
I've been thinking, but... I'm not really sure what's happening.
no subject
That's good news. I guess I have less to worry about now...
[Yes, he knows. And he knows how she has promised to die. Here, though...]
Oh, yeah. 'Bout that...
[He rummages around in his hoodie's pocket and pulls out something that looks like a smartphone.]
Did something like this just show up in your purse or something? I had it when I woke up and tried poking around with it, but... Well, you know me.
[No education. Can't read.]
no subject
Hm?
[Ray looks down, then gingerly takes the device from him. Oh boy, how did you get to calendar settings just plunking around at whatever icon you pleased? Back a few steps she goes so she can try to change some of these accessibility settings. Text-to-speech would be good... Maybe if she made the fonts bigger, they could work on learning to read...]
I guess my purse did feel a little heavier. [Honestly, she had shrugged it off as all that adrenaline finally taking its toll, but she didn't want to voice that thought in case it made Zack think she wasn't prepared to follow through on her end of their deal.] Um. It's a phone. One of the expensive ones? So it can do a lot of things, instead of just letting you talk to people. It's a weird thing to give to us... Maybe they're going to announce our trials over it...?
[That was a floormaster thing to do, right...]
no subject
[Ray might notice that calendar she's exiting out of has no year displayed, and there's no option to display it. There's also an icon on the home screen simply titled "Network." It has a picture of a purple rose on a letter for some reason...]
I don't think anyone would actually go through the trouble to give something that expensive to someone they're gonna kill.
no subject
I didn't know how long you've been on your floor.
[Busted city streets like that don't change much through the years, stuck in their slummish ways. Nothing there was really...up to rich guy smart phone standards. Not that her life had exposed her to that much, either, but... Hmn. Actually, she's still pretty sure this stuff isn't normal.]
Cathy made multiple execution chambers. These are more reusable than some of the things she put us through...
no subject
[A cell phone was not a weapon, so naturally it wasn't confiscated before the game started. Not that it really mattered. There was no reception in that building, and for good reason.]
[Zack does see the weird network icon on the phone, though.]
What's that?
no subject
The network? [It's more tactful than "oh right, it says network", after her underestimation earlier.] Maybe it's like the internet.
[Time to see! ...What the heck is this. More experimental button-pushing.]
...Oh. I think it's recording, now. I'm Rachel Gardner? Zack, introduce yourself. It might be like when we had those photos.
I guess we're probably inviting people to threadjack now? If you're ok with it?
[Oh, fuck. Not this shit again.]
Hey, floor master! Fuck off.
[Yep. Now he's flipping off the network.]
If anyone wants to, sure!
Oh --
[WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS... With a sigh, Ray starts to dig around her own purse for her device.]
We should know who we're dealing with. I haven't seen any clues on how to get to the next floor... [O-KAY, that sure was her stomach growling really loudly, just ignore that.]
no subject
Yeah... The weird thing is, I don't remember falling asleep here... Didn't we take a break on Cathy's floor? Near the dumpsters, where the cameras couldn't see us?
[It was really odd for the floor's theme to completely change all of a sudden... Unless Cathy had multiple personalities or something.]
no subject
Ah. It's my fault we've gotten in this mess.
[Stupid... She'd have to do a lot more to prove her usefulness now. Why did she have to feel so sick?]
It's possible we missed something. I'm sorry, Zack. I wasn't...doing as much as I should have to make sure there was no way for her to get us. Or someone else, from the floor above. Do you think any of the others would break the rules?
no subject
Hey, it's not your fault we got stuck in a room that was filling up with toxic gas. Blame the sadistic bitch for that one.
[By sadistic bitch, he means Cathy. Duh.]
[Zack rubs the back of his neck, wondering about it.]
Danny might, I did see him letting you out of there before I drove a scythe through his torso, Eddie... Not so much? Maybe? And then Cathy would probably try to torture the others...
Not sure who's on the next floor.
no subject
It's my fault we had to rest...
[But Cathy sure was a bitch. Can't deny that. Ray scrolls through the network on her device, eyes unfocused.]
You killed Danny and Eddie. It's possible someone from a higher floor took us to theirs instead...but I don't know why they wouldn't just kill us right away.
[None of you are very good at this...]
no subject
What, so you decided to take in twice the poison or something?
[Cathy is a super bitch.]
No shit, Sherlock! I'm just wondering why the hell someone above us would just kidnap us from the bitch's floor? [Who is even on the next floor again? Zack never paid that close attention to who he worked with...]
no subject
Maybe they're tired of her getting to murder people...?
[augh...okay, she can't take it anymore. Ray shuffles to her seat and resumes adding sriracha to her now-cold eggs. She's hungry, man.]
This place looks... [closer to the final floor than anything, but] Like the killer of this floor doesn't do normal torture. If everyone dies before their floor, they might have been bored enough to come get us.
[thank you god for this meal we share today yadda yadda, honestly even if it's not ideal anymore, this is closer to mana from heaven than anything she'd have expected.]
You went to another floor for me. It's not impossible they would do the same after a while.
no subject
Damn... That bitch must be fucking brutal or something.
[What does the final floor look like again? It's not like he really hung out in there at all.]
Yeah, that was actually a first. I dunno if anyone else tried it before I did...
[Huh. So much for looking through that network app. His cereal's getting soggy, and frankly with the choice of selection it doesn't seem so appetizing anymore.]
[He pushes the bowl to the side, wanders over to the fridge, and starts looking for leftovers of some kind...]
no subject
actually, his prior choice of food really was crazy. She glances up from her eggs, pausing a moment before asking,] Did you eat that a lot?
[She can't fathom why it would have been anyone's first choice.]
no subject
Well, I think I can pretty much eat anything that's there so... Kind of?
[You don't really think about eating habits when you're used to scrounging around for food.]
no subject
[That's upsetting, almost. Not enough that he eyes shift away from their dead state, but her fork does hover her food a second longer than usual. There hadn't always been meals ready at home, but at least the fridge and cupboards were stocked enough that Ray could put something together when everyone else was in no mood for a family dinner. Her floor had been the same, with how specific she'd been in getting it set up. Cereal and soda in the same bowl was just...wrong... His new choice is fine, though.
Ray lightly nudges her hot sauce in his direction. It's good on pizza, too!!! She doesn't have busted tastebuds from eating so much spicy food!!]
So you were the first to try a lot of things. I don't think anyone else would have thought to put them together.
no subject
[... Okay, maybe he'll push the hot sauce away. Seriously, who puts hot sauce on pizza?]
I guess you could say that. The cereal and coke combo wasn't the worst thing I've ever eaten.
no subject
Really? [She chews thoughtfully, tines of her fork clattering softly against her plate. It sounded difficult.
Made it even more baffling that he'd chosen that as his breakfast... She hadn't really given much thought to the subject before, since her dietary needs had always been taken care of and Danny was free to get what he needed while he was out. Zack never left his floor, though... All that had been there was busted up buildings and garbage. Even if it suited a killer like him, it seemed odd to leave his food options so limited.]
...Your file mentioned substandard living conditions. I guess it isn't really a surprise to hear that, not that it really matters.
no subject
Huh? [He raised an eyebrow at her statement.]
Are you talking about that resume thing you found on the gravedigging brat's floor?
no subject
Yes. I didn't have any impressions on what it said, and I still don't, but I still read and remember it.
CW: child neglect
Well, it's not like I really dwell on my past that much. [gulp]
So what, if I ended up in a shitty orphanage where I had to live off scraps because the bastards kept forgetting to feed me? I'm still here. Why should I be thinking about a bunch of assholes I sent to their graves?
