[ there. now she knows. never you mind that he has zero intentions of bringing dolls back to purgatory (now that would just be plum stupid), but he isn't about to let the man roam around out there, monstrous and out of his mind. he needs this, and if black badge is going to deny him, doc's gonna supply him.

it's the least he can do.

[she knows dolls and doc don't exactly get along but they're both important to her in ways she hasn't completely sorted out for herself beyond she knows that they're her people and she'll do whatever it takes to keep them at her side.

it breaks her heart to think dolls is out there alone. that he can't return to them. it isn't fair. it isn't right. she couldn't save willa, she can't save dolls --

it's too much when she bears to think about it too long.

Thank you. [Her voice is quieter now, more intimate. She's glad that Doc is here, that she doesn't have to be in this new place all by herself.

She doesn't want to be alone anymore.]

[ doc gives her fingers a gentle squeeze, reaching up with his others to tip his hat. ]

Understood. [there's a beat and then.]

So you were saying you think we should stay close?

It's only logical. We are the only members of Black Badge around these parts. And you know what they say: US Marshals and their forced affiliations must stick together.

[ they don't say that. nobody says that, doc. ]

[middlefinger]

[She definitely rolls her eyes a little at that, but in an affectionate sort of way.]

I must have missed that in the handbook.

[there was no handbook. and if there were she wouldn't read it, wynonna prefers to go off book.]

Still, this peace won't last from what I've heard. I might need someone with your skills.

There's a handbook? Is that what I've been using to balance out that chair? And here I thought it was just a useless block of nonsense.

[ yeah, if there was a rulebook, he wouldn't read it. not exactly his way to play by the rules. never has been, never will be. he's doc gdamn holliday. ]

[it's something they both have in common, they would much rather do things their own way.

it's why wynonna keeps getting in trouble for how she writes paperwork. she hates paperwork.]

Well, you have those fast hands of yours. They might come in handy.

[ meanwhile, doc's reports are likely annoyingly thorough and full of the 1800s brand of technical jargon. (medical school. 'nuff said.) ]

It's possible. [She takes a step in closer now.] If I needed a quick shot, you'd be the one to call.

[which is at least true, there's few people as good at shooting as doc was, that might end up being important here.

but she's also way too amused at herself for the double entendre and might be having a hard time not laughing at it.

[It's said with a small shrug of her shoulders. She can't help herself sometimes.]

[ doc reaches out with the hand that's not still intertwined with hers to brush the backs of his fingers against her cheek. ]

[oh no. wynonna is like a puppy starved for attention how is she supposed to resist. she doesn't. she leans into the touch.]

At least someone thinks I'm amusing.

[ he's not one to pass up an open invitation such as this, cupping her cheek in his palm. ]

I know we had important business to attend to back in Purgatory, but this wondrous place might just be the holiday you need.

[middlefinger]

[the moment he mentions purgatory her brow furrows a little. she thinks of dolls out there, alone and struggling against...whatever he really is. she thinks of waverly. of black badge. of the monsters willa let in.

can she really just take a break from that? it was her job, she's not just a marshall, she's the earp heir, it's a title she was not only born into but one she fought for.

still, she's tired. she's been so tired and sad and lonely and trying to keep it together. maybe it would be okay just to keep this for herself for a moment. she's never gotten a lot of nice moments. not since she killed her father and they sent her away.]

They say time doesn't work the same here. They won't even know we're gone.

[wildwest]

[ he sees it, the moment his unwelcome reminder drags her back down to the reality they are unwittingly avoiding simply by being here right now. ]

That is what they say, so what's the harm in indulging? [ his voice softens. ] You're tired, Wynonna.

[middlefinger]

[she is tired. she's so tired and lonely and lately it's felt like she's had no one to talk to. dolls is gone. waverly has nicole. doc has been busy, and while she knows why now it doesn't change the hole that's been in her chest lately. the hole that has always been there. she's damaged goods and eventually people get tired of her and she's alone again. she couldn't save willa (again). she couldn't save dolls. it's been too much.

but she isn't alone now. here. doc is here and he's warm and soft and it's so nice not to have to pretend like she has it all together. because she doesn't. she doesn't have anything together.

she feels her eyes water and she tries to bat the tears away.]

You're right. I'm really tired.

[wildwest]

Hey now—

[ doc pulls her to him, reaching up to remove his hat as he does so. it falls to the ground at their feet, discarded. and as he moves in a slight semi-circle to pull them into the nearest room out of a desire to give her the privacy she deserves (for all too often, she is on display, standing center stage), it's left lying in the hall outside the door. ]

[middlefinger]

[she's not expecting the warmth of his arms around her, the shock of contact. it's not that no one ever hugs her -- she and waverly hug all the time, but this is different. wynonna doesn't tend to be the one people comfort; she has to be strong and hold things together.

this isn't the first time doc has used privacy to make sure she was okay. she remembers how he stayed and lingered after they slept together after what happened with jack. he knew she was still coming back from it.

her fingers curl around the material of his shirt, her head resting on his shoulder as she finally lets go, a few tears falling from her eyes.]

Let it out, love. You don't need to hold onto it so fiercely. Not here. Not with me.

[ doc strokes her hair soothingly, holding her while she cries. it's something she's needed to do, in his humble opinion, since the opening of the ghost river triangle. however brief that even might have been, it still happened. and being forced to put down her sister, along with the events leading up to that traumatic action, have left scars upon scars. no one person should ever be expected to endure as much as she has in the span of a mere few weeks, nevermind remain strong in the aftermath.

sorrow is not weakness. it's a necessary expression, one that reminds them they're still human, a step above the revenants, demons, and other assorted criminals they hunt. ]

[middlefinger]

[it's not just willa, though a lot of it is that. but killing her brought up a lot of old feelings, feelings she's held onto since the night she accidentally killed her father, since she lost willa the first time. feelings she held onto after she was sent away and everyone thought she was crazy so she thought she would just prove them right and act out and do shitty stuff.

and while burning up willa's stuff had offered some closure there was still a lot of open wounds there. wounds wynonna isn't sure will even completely heal.

but it feels nice for once to just let them out. it feels like a long time passes where she just stands there, clinging to him and crying until she finally lifts her head, bringing a hand up to wipe away some of the tears.

she probably looks red faced and gross. awesome.]

[ doc's answer is to simply shake his head in dismissal of her gratitude. no thanks required, earp. you needed this, and better it him than some poor unwitting fellow who'd experience her grief in the form of being pistol whipped or bedded and discarded. ]

You relax while you're here, alright? Let me worry about finding a way outta this place.

[it's true, historically speaking wynonna doesn't always find the best outlets for her grief. even the last time she tried to kiss doc had been more about how sad and alone she felt that anything else.

Still, it's hard to just agree to let him take care of things, she's so used to being the one to do that.

Maybe for once it's okay that she doesn't.]
