captain kathryn janeway | star trek: voyager.

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
i. action: arrival (mansion)
[ without fail, red alert sounds at the most inopportune of times. such as when the captain is actually heeding the advice of her holographic chief medical officer (for once) and taking a much needed break from her never-ending list of duties on the holodeck. thus, it's while adorning a dress straight out of the victorian era that she darts out into the corridor, bumping into a few engineering-bound crewmen as the ship rocks from the force of unseen weapons fire. she barely has time to swing by her quarters to grab the necessities -- her combadge, tricorder, and just in case: phaser -- on her way to the bridge. no time to change into uniform.

this was supposed to be friendly territory. she spent two weeks negotiating voyager's passage through this region. if whoever was firing on them had any sort of ties to the magistrate of this system, there were going to be words. a very unpleasant series of them. ]

Helm, hold our position. Tuvok, I want to know who's firing on us and--

[ it takes a moment for the unfamiliar scenery of the mansion to catch up with her. she'd been walking and talking on autopilot, quickly switching the proverbial gears to manual control.

was she still on the holodeck? ]

Computer, end program. [ nothing. ] Computer, display exit. [ nope. ] Janeway to Bridge, respond. [ not happening. ]

Janeway to Voyager. [ silence. she huffs in annoyance, rolling her eyes. this is the last thing she needs. ] ...of course.

ii. action: later (kitchen)
[ she can be found in the kitchen later on in the day, petticoat tossed aside while elbow-deep in the depths of a partially gutted microwave. immodest for a victorian woman, but practical for a woman from the 24th century who was attempting to macgyver antique parts together in a futile attempt at boosting frequency of the subspace beacon in her combadge. ]

iii. network: audio only
"Welcome to Wonderland," [ she reads aloud, skimming through the pamphlet she's been handed. the literary reference is unfortunately lost on her. alice's adventures in wonderland wasn't required reading at starfleet academy. ] Ominous, but a relatively tame greeting in comparison to some of the others I've heard. Certainly beats "the weak will perish" and "resistance is futile."

How accurate is the information presented in this pamphlet? [ aka if it's watered down, she wants to hear the unfiltered version. ]

[personal profile] signalized 2017-02-10 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Bruce has been here long enough to know that there are people from different worlds and different time periods and things that shouldn't go together often do. so even though she's dressed up like someone from the victorian period Bruce doesn't assume that means she doesn't know what she's doing.

her world could be something steam punk themed, after all.

but either way she seems very adapt at what she's doing which is enough to catch his attention, distracting him momentarily from the task of getting himself coffee. he makes his way over.
]

If you're trying to find a way to send communications out of this place, you'll be disappointed.

[he may have tried to see if he could contact Alfred at one point.]
directives: (┅ xxxii.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
There's no such thing as disappointment, [ she says with a grunt, voice strained as she stands on the tips of her toes, leaning as far over the lip of the microwave as she can. one forceful tug later and she rises back up with the capacitor in hand. ] Only attempts that don't work and a growing list of ones that just might.

[ he goes ignored for a moment as janeway reaches for her tricorder, flipping it open and situating the capacitor on top. it clicks into place as if it belongs there, the tricorder beeping in time with her fingers as they dance across the display screen. ]

What can I do for you? [ business-like, as if she's still donning a military uniform and is standing on the bridge of her ship, not half-clothed in a victorian gown in the middle of a rustic kitchen. ] If this is your facility, I assure you I'll clean up after myself and put this back together before I leave.

That's a positive spin to put on things.

[Bruce is more of a cynic, himself, but no less stubbornly determined when he sets his mind to it. He has notebooks filled with notes in his room, and many failed experiments in there as well. He's constantly trying to figure out how to get home, how this place works.

He laughs at her question, shaking his head.
]

Definitely not my place, but you're going to find leaving is a little more difficult than you might be used to.

[ just around the corner, janeway can easily hear a familiar angry snarl, a crunch, and a surprised yelp. footsteps sound, quickly moving away while a familiar voice grumbles to herself: ]

I swear-- if one more person even thinks the word magic I'm gonna break a lot more than...

[ with her helper running off to treat their broken nose, her words start to muffle as b'elanna steps back into the wardrobe she'd violently claimed, tricorder moving from corner to corner in hurried inspection. ]
directives: (┅ ℓiii.)

[personal profile] aggressor 2017-02-13 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I said-- [ it's her feet that move first to shift her weight-- and her elbow follows, aiming without looking. b'elanna turns and puts that body weight behind the sharp blow she intends to plant in yet another native's face-- ]

Back off!
directives: (┅ ℓxii.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the reflex is automatic: dodge, catch, twist, pin. she's well aware of the fact that b'elanna could throw her off at any moment, but she's hoping she caught the other woman off guard long enough to get through to her. ]

Lieutenant! Calm down. It's me.
aggressor: (insomniatic_trekvoy0230)

[personal profile] aggressor 2017-02-13 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ but for a few circumstances (within a less rigid social context; while elbow-deep in reprogramming, rebuilding, refitting, etc), it's always taken effort for b'elanna to exert control over her anger.

anger is easy for her-- tactile and usable. but that voice using her title, it breaks through the white heat of gut instinct made real. she all but goes limp after a moment.
]

Captain! I'm sorry, I thought-- [ that she was all alone here. she smirks, letting another sort of surprise pierce through: ] Nice reflexes.
directives: (┅ xxxvii.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-16 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ only when the tense muscles beneath her hands relax and her chief engineer acknowledges her identity does janeway release her and take a hearty step back. she's tugging at the sleeves of the now-outlandish gown, pulling them back down in a way that seems to say she's immensely annoyed with the propriety of it all. ]

You're not the only one who's had experience fighting Cardassians, [ she says with a shrug that's designed to be far more modest than it ought to be. that which she brags about is rarely that which she's capable of using against you. ] A few rounds of velocity every now and then does a body good. Unfortunately, that was not the program I was enjoying this evening.

[ obviously. (she hates this dress now. it's being recycled and turned into freshly replicated coffee as soon as they get back to her ship.) ]

[The actual alternatives tug a smile across John's lips. He starts the audio, then decides, on second though, show her a friendly face. Being new here is rough, he won't deny that.

The smile she'll get is welcoming, and if she decides to reciprocate with video, that works for him. But if she keeps to audio, he won't be offended in the least.]

I think "Welcome to Wonderland" is sort of sugar-coating it, but yeah, it's still better. My personal favourite is "surrender or die". But at least with those, you know where you stand, right? "Wonderland" is kind of a misleading construct.

It's mostly accurate. I mean, it's not awe-inspiring and I sure as hell wouldn't pay for this time-share, but most days it's right on the money. What you've gotta remember is, everything you've experienced? It's now up for grabs by this place. One day you'll be kicking back on the beach, enjoying a beer and the next, you're waking up to some nightmare someone else has lived through back home. Alien invasion, zombie apocalypse, mansion-sized fish tank... So, I guess judging how bad things can get is pretty relative. On that note, if we're attacked by life-sucking aliens, that would be my bad. Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard.

So it's some sort of sentient holo-environment. [ nodding. she's actually following along with ease, even if some of his references -- what on earth is a time-share? -- are lost on her. ]

Captain Kathryn Janeway. Dare I ask about these "life-sucking" aliens, Colonel?

The pamphlet is accurate, but it's understandably incomplete. It will have been a year in June. I'm a reporter back home; it's my job to get the facts.

( to uncover truths. )

The pamphlet is correct about the mirrors. It's best to proceed with caution unless proven otherwise. What the pamphlet doesn't say is there are ways of ensuring privacy. If you break a mirror, the other side cannot see us or hear us. It'll piece itself back together eventually, but it gives us a good window of time.

Sounds like a worthwhile profession. I'm a scientist, myself. Among other things.

[ the sound she makes seems to indicate that she doesn't find a year to be long at all. compared to the several she's spent on the far other side of the galaxy, a mere year doesn't seem like much anymore. ]

I take it that means certain areas of this building can be fortified against them for a period of time.

[ hopefully this one won't accuse her ship as being the cause behind a temporal disaster in the 29th century. her history with timeships thus far isn't the greatest -- and it won't be getting any better. ]

This... [ what was it called, again? not a toaster. she knows what a toaster is, her mother had one in the kitchen growing up. but they never had one of these godforsaken contraptions that resembled early replicators but did nothing of the sort. ] I assure you, it'll be back in working order once I'm done borrowing a few of its components. I took it apart, I can put it back together.

[ perhaps even better than before when she gets through with it. she's already fixed an issue with the power supply voltage. ]

[She’s in luck; not only does Rip not know anything about any such temporal disasters, he’s also not likely to blame Wonderland and all that it is on something so--limited as the destruction of a single ship.

It takes him a moment to realize that she doesn’t identify it because she doesn’t know the word. From a certain perspective he’s used to it: those of the past of course don’t necessarily know what to call future technology. But the way she speaks, calling the parts “components,” the confidence of being able to fix it? That doesn’t speak to someone who has no clue about technology.]

A microwave oven. A device designed for the quick reheating of food, popular starting around—oh, the mid-to-late 20th century or so.

[What is far more interesting in Rip’s eyes is the piece of equipment she holds up next. The look of it alone screams futuristic, even by his standards. He takes a step closer, half-tempted to simply take the thing to better examine it. Luckily, he’s a bit more polite than that.]

May I?
directives: (┅ vi.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Microwave oven. [ she glances back at it for a moment. not a very creative name, but at least it matches function. the last time she saw one, it was sitting on the other side of glass and force fields at the smithsonian. ] Blunt, but it works. Can't say that it would be my preferred method of cooking.

[ she'd almost rather eat leola root. almost.

when he asks to see her tricorder, she hesitates, some of her more friendly-appearing demeanor fading to give way to something with more of a calm, hard edge that lies beneath. ]
Under the condition that I get it back, [ is what she settles on, holding the device out to him. ]

I doubt anyone could, to be honest. But it is convenient--a middle ground for those less capable at the stove and whom don't simply want to wish hot food out of the air.

[Oh, has she heard that part yet? About how they can simply think of what they all want and perhaps if they believe strongly enough, they might get it. Rip doesn't know, and perhaps he should ask--but he's a bit distracted.

It's been ages since he's seen a proper piece of technology, and this one looks advanced even by his standards.]

Oh, you needn't worry. Even if I wanted to steal it, I couldn't exactly go very far. [He takes the device, studying it's screen and controls, but he hasn't missed the change in her along the way. There's steel to match her wit, and the confidence with which she spoke of manipulating the microwave suddenly has a stronger backing.]

You must be from some place fascinating indeed...or some time.
directives: (┅ ℓxxii.)

[personal profile] directives 2017-02-24 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ less capable at the stove-- that might as well be printed on the walls of her quarters. she couldn't even get her (faulty, she swears the damned thing is faulty) replicator to work half the time, much less boil water. cooking is one of the few things kathryn janeway is incapable of doing. (one day she is going to tear the EPS conduits behind the walls apart to find out why her replicator malfunctions, but the one in the mess hall responds to her commands just fine.) ]

A statement which applies to a bulk of this mansion's residents, no doubt. From the way I understand it, everyone here hails from a different time and place, whether it be a different universe entirely or one that shares a multitude of similarities with the next.
