her world could be something steam punk themed, after all.
but either way she seems very adapt at what she's doing which is enough to catch his attention, distracting him momentarily from the task of getting himself coffee. he makes his way over.]
If you're trying to find a way to send communications out of this place, you'll be disappointed.
[he may have tried to see if he could contact Alfred at one point.]

[ he goes ignored for a moment as janeway reaches for her tricorder, flipping it open and situating the capacitor on top. it clicks into place as if it belongs there, the tricorder beeping in time with her fingers as they dance across the display screen. ]
What can I do for you? [ business-like, as if she's still donning a military uniform and is standing on the bridge of her ship, not half-clothed in a victorian gown in the middle of a rustic kitchen. ] If this is your facility, I assure you I'll clean up after myself and put this back together before I leave.

[Bruce is more of a cynic, himself, but no less stubbornly determined when he sets his mind to it. He has notebooks filled with notes in his room, and many failed experiments in there as well. He's constantly trying to figure out how to get home, how this place works.
He laughs at her question, shaking his head.]
Definitely not my place, but you're going to find leaving is a little more difficult than you might be used to.

[ stranded 70,000 lightyears from home? nbd. keep calm and set a course for home. ]

I swear-- if one more person even thinks the word magic I'm gonna break a lot more than...
[ with her helper running off to treat their broken nose, her words start to muffle as b'elanna steps back into the wardrobe she'd violently claimed, tricorder moving from corner to corner in hurried inspection. ]

B'Elanna.

Lieutenant! Calm down. It's me.

anger is easy for her-- tactile and usable. but that voice using her title, it breaks through the white heat of gut instinct made real. she all but goes limp after a moment. ]
Captain! I'm sorry, I thought-- [ that she was all alone here. she smirks, letting another sort of surprise pierce through: ] Nice reflexes.

You're not the only one who's had experience fighting Cardassians, [ she says with a shrug that's designed to be far more modest than it ought to be. that which she brags about is rarely that which she's capable of using against you. ] A few rounds of velocity every now and then does a body good. Unfortunately, that was not the program I was enjoying this evening.
[ obviously. (she hates this dress now. it's being recycled and turned into freshly replicated coffee as soon as they get back to her ship.) ]

The smile she'll get is welcoming, and if she decides to reciprocate with video, that works for him. But if she keeps to audio, he won't be offended in the least.]
I think "Welcome to Wonderland" is sort of sugar-coating it, but yeah, it's still better. My personal favourite is "surrender or die". But at least with those, you know where you stand, right? "Wonderland" is kind of a misleading construct.
It's mostly accurate. I mean, it's not awe-inspiring and I sure as hell wouldn't pay for this time-share, but most days it's right on the money. What you've gotta remember is, everything you've experienced? It's now up for grabs by this place. One day you'll be kicking back on the beach, enjoying a beer and the next, you're waking up to some nightmare someone else has lived through back home. Alien invasion, zombie apocalypse, mansion-sized fish tank... So, I guess judging how bad things can get is pretty relative. On that note, if we're attacked by life-sucking aliens, that would be my bad. Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard.

So it's some sort of sentient holo-environment. [ nodding. she's actually following along with ease, even if some of his references -- what on earth is a time-share? -- are lost on her. ]
Captain Kathryn Janeway. Dare I ask about these "life-sucking" aliens, Colonel?

Would you care to fill in any of the blanks for me?
( audio )
[ and iris is a reporter. it's her job to inform. ]
Where would you like me to start?
( audio )
[ because it was important to know how long people were held here. as well as cause for added concern -- and she is just that: concerned. she's just had a lot of practice not showing it. ]
The beginning, if you could. Anything you deem worth mentioning.

( to uncover truths. )
The pamphlet is correct about the mirrors. It's best to proceed with caution unless proven otherwise. What the pamphlet doesn't say is there are ways of ensuring privacy. If you break a mirror, the other side cannot see us or hear us. It'll piece itself back together eventually, but it gives us a good window of time.
( audio )
[ the sound she makes seems to indicate that she doesn't find a year to be long at all. compared to the several she's spent on the far other side of the galaxy, a mere year doesn't seem like much anymore. ]
I take it that means certain areas of this building can be fortified against them for a period of time.

...Well I'm rather glad I hadn't been planning on using that. [Funny thing about the kitchen: sometimes people use it to get food rather than scavenge for parts. He heads over towards one of the cupboards, but his attention hasn't been taken away from the woman entirely. He just wants to get his apple first.]
Having any luck with...whatever it is you're trying to do?
no subject
This... [ what was it called, again? not a toaster. she knows what a toaster is, her mother had one in the kitchen growing up. but they never had one of these godforsaken contraptions that resembled early replicators but did nothing of the sort. ] I assure you, it'll be back in working order once I'm done borrowing a few of its components. I took it apart, I can put it back together.
[ perhaps even better than before when she gets through with it. she's already fixed an issue with the power supply voltage. ]
Yes and no. [ she turns to him, planting one hand on her hip while the other holds up her tricorder. ] Even if it doesn't, it's just one attempt of many.

It takes him a moment to realize that she doesn’t identify it because she doesn’t know the word. From a certain perspective he’s used to it: those of the past of course don’t necessarily know what to call future technology. But the way she speaks, calling the parts “components,” the confidence of being able to fix it? That doesn’t speak to someone who has no clue about technology.]
A microwave oven. A device designed for the quick reheating of food, popular starting around—oh, the mid-to-late 20th century or so.
[What is far more interesting in Rip’s eyes is the piece of equipment she holds up next. The look of it alone screams futuristic, even by his standards. He takes a step closer, half-tempted to simply take the thing to better examine it. Luckily, he’s a bit more polite than that.]
May I?
no subject
[ she'd almost rather eat leola root. almost.
when he asks to see her tricorder, she hesitates, some of her more friendly-appearing demeanor fading to give way to something with more of a calm, hard edge that lies beneath. ] Under the condition that I get it back, [ is what she settles on, holding the device out to him. ]
no subject
[Oh, has she heard that part yet? About how they can simply think of what they all want and perhaps if they believe strongly enough, they might get it. Rip doesn't know, and perhaps he should ask--but he's a bit distracted.
It's been ages since he's seen a proper piece of technology, and this one looks advanced even by his standards.]
Oh, you needn't worry. Even if I wanted to steal it, I couldn't exactly go very far. [He takes the device, studying it's screen and controls, but he hasn't missed the change in her along the way. There's steel to match her wit, and the confidence with which she spoke of manipulating the microwave suddenly has a stronger backing.]
You must be from some place fascinating indeed...or some time.

A statement which applies to a bulk of this mansion's residents, no doubt. From the way I understand it, everyone here hails from a different time and place, whether it be a different universe entirely or one that shares a multitude of similarities with the next.
